any time man. I was scratching my head too. I guess Valve must have some
arbitrary range of ports addresses they'll accept.

You might try a different value for -sport. I tried a couple different ones

All,

Many thanks for your help. I used "-sport 27014" in the command line and
that seemed to work.

... I sure would like to run an update someday without running into these
issues...

Happy holidays...

my apologies in advance if this question has been answered repeatedly...

I just updated my HL1 TFC dedicated server and now it will not operate in
VAC secure mode (it seems to be seeing the Valve master servers just fine).
I also updated a HL1 DM server and it seems to be working in VAC mode just
fine.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Actually, no, I don't get your point. I used won for years, and when I

be an optional type of authentication, not the only type. Anyway, the

Granted 1 minute or less of searching online would have yeilded an

it's a problem on my end, rather connection-handling issues on Valve's end.

Re: RE: [hlds] Newbie Trying to host a server

2005-07-20 Thread iceflatline
Actually DynDNS works quite well for giving "your crew" a single domain name to
use for your server. I'm using it for my Q3 server, HLDS and SRCDS - although
candidly my WAN address doesn't change very much. When it does, my router
notifies DynDNS and the host name resolves to the new IP address. Another
option is with DynDNS is to switch to the "static" DNS service. It's useful
for when, like me, you address does not change much, and you won't get those
perodic, yet annoying, messages from Dyn reminding you to "touch" your account.
It's also a free service.

Third-party browsers, and the Steam game browser are interested in IP address
and should track auomatically when the address changes.

hmm, did you restart the server after? Do "cvarlist sv_log" in your
console to see all the options available.

My apologies if this also has been covered previously...

Is there a way to get log files to append to the previously generated log file?
In other words, I would like to have a single log file to manage versus
multiple log files.

qUiCkSiLvEr,

Thank you so much for your very detailed response. This information
helps tremendously.

Kevin Ottalini wrote:

iceflatline,
Those sorts of errors on HL2DM servers are not unusual and can be
ignored
for the most part.

I also found that on my new HL2DM map http://qsextreme.com/dm_spookface
the first time it's run on the server there may be sounds flagged as
missing
that are really there (the errors won't show if you changelelevel).

Strangely, the sounds appear to play regardless of the message (server
thinks they aren't there but the client has it).

The server will sometimes spam a number of misc errors like "clamping"and
"missing weapon animations" (crossbow), "interpenetrating entities"
(slams
in func_doors), "CreateFragmentsFromFile" (and other datatable errors)
and
"sound list full", etc, all of which are normal right now.

In the startup log you will also see error messages about "Error reading
weapon data for: weapon_", these are "normal".

There are a lot of unfinished HL2DM maps out there that will show lots of
different errors too.

Unfinished maps also may have some black models or textures, if you
get one
of these don't run it, get the latest version from the map author
(bumpmap
problem).

Also, don't rename maps, this will mess up the internal bumpmap texture
paths (and create black or purple/black checkerboards).

Other things that happen that are known issues (not a server setup or
config
problem):

1. Players that die in the water will hear gurgling after respawn
(client
must reconnect to fix)
2. Maps that have func_breakable items will have items not respawn in
the
right spot after pickup (item will respawn at 0,0,0 instead)
3. After running a map for a while, some (not all) players will find
that
they are unable to get in/out of tight crawlways (model animation
problem? -
repeatable).
4. you might get a server out of date message even though the server
is up
to date - WinXP/HLTV problem, don't use "tv_enable 1" for now
5. HLTV is not functional in HL2DM right now
6. If you update a map BSP on your server, be sure to delete the old
ZTMPs
and replace the .BZ2 on the fast download or players will continue to get
the old map.

My little hl2dm server (4 player) that is only running my new map has
been
extremely full and players stay on for many hours and seem to be having a
lot of fun. I've had more then 3,500 map downloads in the last 3 weeks -
very amazing (and gratifying).

this would be because the change of server protocol and lack of update

Re: [hlds] Re: sv_unlag and Ping

2005-06-25 Thread iceflatline

i agree. i run hl and tfc servers (iceflatline.homeip.net) with that
cvar enabled and it does seem to help clients with latency issues.

playing without sv_unlag makes no sense at all, especially not over

I saw someone talking about sv_unlag and ping
performance. Is it a good idea to have sv_unlag 1 in
all our server.cfg files as a general rule to help
people with bad ping rates and if so would that be for
all HL games, CS, DOD, CSS etc ?

Thanks for info

Re: [hlds] Lowering Ping

2005-06-24 Thread iceflatline

*sv_unlag
*Enables or disables server's lag compensation mechanism. It's supposed
to help people with slower Internet connections. Examples:

sv_unlag 0 Disables the lag compensation
sv_unlag 1 Enables the lag compensation (default)

*sv_maxunlag
*Sets the maximum ammount of seconds that the netcode compensates for
someone's ping. Examples:

sv_maxunlag 0.5 500ms is the default

*This is only valid if sv_unlag is enable

*sv_unlagsamples *
Sets the ammount of packets that will be averaged to find the ping to
compensate for. Examples:

sv_unlagsamples 1 The server will calculate the ping from the last
sample. (default)
sv_unlagsamples 2 The server will calculate the ping from the
average of the last two samples.

Hope this helps...

Ok, now that i finally have my stand alone server up and running, are
there any commands for the server to lower ping? I'm just wondering,
because one of my old friends told me that he put in some commands
that helped lower the ping.

Thank you.
