Michael E. Bergeron wrote:
Is there any way that I can set up a dedicated server on my own
computer without the partition that would be a good one?

HLDS/SourceDS both install into their own directories, making it a very
neat and portable server (ie, no registry settings, no system files;
everything lives inside the directory you install it to). Just download
the hldsupdatetool.exe from the Steam website and run it without any
parameters to see the list of available commands.

If you plan on running both HLDS and Source games, you will need to
install HLDS in its own directory (say c:\hlserver) and Source in its
own directory (maybe c:\srcds). Individual games install into their
directories beneath that, like c:\hlserver\cstrike or c:\srcds\cstrike.
You can run multiple games from a single installation. That is, you can
run both CS1.6 and DOD from the same c:\hlserver directory as long as
you have the appropriate resources.

It sounds like you're going to be running this at home, so make sure
that you setup your router appropriately to allow traffic on the correct
ports. There's a *ton* of information about this available on the Steam
website and in the archives of this list.

Odd, I was always under the impression that this variable was limited to
startup only. I wonder if this changed with Source.

I suppose you could also make a config file for each of your clients,
and use the mapchangecfgfile cvar (does this work on Source?) to make
your own, that'll: 1) exec the client's server.cfg; 2) exec YOUR server,
overwriting any cvars you want restricted, like maxplayers.

So for instance, for client 1, his startup becomes:

+mapchangecfgfile client1.cfg

And in client1.cfg, we have:

exec Client1-editable.cfg // the file the client can edit
maxplayers 16 // the value YOU want for maxplayers

That should overwrite any changes they make.

  steam: -applaunch 240 +connect css.dexworld.org:27015

The applaunch determines which game to launch. Jason Weisberger

  Half-Life Dedicated Server- 5
  Counter-Strike 1.6- 10
  Team Fortress Classic - 20

  Deathmatch Classic- 40
  Opposing Force- 50

  Half-Life 2 - 220
  Counter-Strike Source Final - 240
  Half-Life Source - 280
Day of Defeat Source - 300

You can use different command line parameters to launch mods as well, I
think something like steam: -applaunch 70 -game ts +connect
ts.example.com if you have a Specialist server at that IP.

You'll have to setup the DNS to do it :) If your server provider is

IP you want them to point to.

Zoneedit.com is a good free DNS service, too. I've been using it for

the reverse DNS for us, which isn't entirely necessary.

Do you have a script on your site that queries your servers to show
player limits and map names? If so, repurpose that and use it as your
MOTD. Such scripts are capable of querying a server's ruleset, meaning
all those cvars you're concerned about are still available. Just make
one script for all your 40 servers, and change the redirect to point to
it, something like http://www.example.com/query.php?ip=192.168.1.1,
modifying the IP for each MOTD. There's no copying needed.

Anyway, thanks for the suggestions, will wait and see if valve up the

little speed limit signs on the roads.

Valve accepted responsibility for anti-cheat technology by starting VAC.
They told Punkbuster to bugger off, and disabled a key part of HLGuard's
previous prevention methods. The community's tried to work around it,
but there's not a whole lot they can do without putting a larger burden
on a mostly clueless and lazy playerbase (i.e., Cheating-Death).

Do you just want it to look at, or are you collecting the information?
Every HLDS/SRCDS console I've seen has the current map, players and
server fps along the top of the console window. You have to turn the
scroll buffer off (right click on the console window - Properties -
Screen Buffer Size - change the 300 to 25). Tell it to use those
settings for windows of the same name, and you'll always have that

In your console, do cvarlist log csscvars.txt and wait a minute or
two. Then look in your cstrike directory for a file called csscvars.txt.
It contains all the cvars that Source will recognize, many with
descriptions. Just sift through that, looking for applicable settings.

[hlds] Admins, share your inside info!

2004-12-15 Thread ironchef
Hey folks,

There seems to be a large number of threads coming up on the lists
asking some legitimate questions and getting overlooked by Valve staff,
such as the state/progress of VAC and getting rid of all the no-steam
hacks. The threads are full of speculation, but some of you have hinted
that you know something the rest of us don't.

So, to those of you who do take the time to email Alfred, Eric or Erik
off-list, PLEASE share the info you get from them in a new thread. It'll
go a long way toward spreading the information that we all need. They're
all busy folks at Valve, and if one person gets valuable info from them
and shares it, it'll likely make all our lives easier.

Thankya!

Try using sv_logsdir

Also, what are all the new Logging features I saw Alfred mention?

Here are commands and available descriptions taken from cvarlist:

log Enables logging to file, console, and udp on |

logaddress_add Set address and port for remote host ip:port.
logaddress_del Remove address and port for remote host ip:port.
logaddress_delall Remove all udp addresses being logged to
logaddress_list List all addresses currently being used by Logaddress.
sv_log_onefile Log server information to only one file
sv_logecho Echo log information to the console.
sv_logfile Log server information in the log file.
sv_logsdir Folder in the game directory where server logs
will be stored.
sv_logbans
sv_logdownloadlist

To get a list of all the server's cvars and log that to a file, do:

cvarlist log cvars.txt

And then poke through cvars.txt.

Hey, welcome to Dysfunction Junction.

 1) which anti-cheat software is the best? Which anti-cheat should I
use? Do they require a client anti-cheat to be installed like the old
 days?

There are none. VAC (Valve anti-cheat) is barely functional at this
point, too. Additionally there's the joyous steam hacks, offering
countless IDs for players. Best bet now is to have good admins
omnipresent, and issue IP bans rather than ID bans.

 2) which stats are good to go?

I believe Psychostats is functional with CSS these days, but I haven't
had a chance to check it out personally. http://www.psychostats.com/

 3) is server.counter-strike.com info updated to reflect the new source
 engine or is everything compatible?

I've never relied on any one particular web site for information about
the server or the console. So many lead to dead links, have horribly
outdated information, and/or read like they were written by an
illiterate speed freak. This list -- despite the frequent off-topic
posts and inability to follow some good ol' standard posting etiquette
-- is a decent source of information, so go ahead and post specific
questions if you have 'em.

I got HLSW working tho, and it seems fine.

There's a fun bug in CSS that will prevent rcon from working after a
period of time. I haven't experienced it yet, but I've seen mention of
it here several times, so maybe one of those suffering from it will help
you. But generally, HLSW is a good tool to have.

I am liking source/counter-strike a lot, even tho it seems like it is
all or mostly just a few of the old maps. I am hoping for some new
maps, or more old maps soon...

That seems to be the consensus, especially among folks who've been
playing CS since its betas. There are a few custom maps floating around
now, but with no in-game downloads available (players will have to
manually install maps for the time being), it's difficult to get people
to play any customs.

Like the others mentioned, the multiplayer part of HL2 is
Counter-Strike: Source. You can get this the same you way get other
games via Steam, using the hldsupdatetool, but with a couple exceptions.

First, make a new directory for the Source Dedicated Server (srcds) off
your root directory. C:\srcds is a good place.

Copy your hldsupdatetool.exe to this new directory.

Now run hldsupdatetool.exe like you used to:
hldsupdatetool.exe -command update -game Counter-Strike Source
-username [EMAIL PROTECTED] -password yourpass -dir .

Note the quotes around Counter-Strike Source, they're necessary. Give
it a few minutes and you should be all set.
