it's pretty decent.

their servers are in Arizona.

I have used godaddy to host my maps on my server paying a little under
$7/mo (since i have multiple domains have the deluxe plan), but you can
get it for $5/mo and its full web hosting. Works great. its fast never
had a problem and think in about a year i had 1 unscheduled downtime of
about 2 mins and the scheduled ones where about 1-2 and happen rarely.
would be cheaper then the other host.

Re: [hlds] New Topic: Map Hosting Solutions

2009-01-14 Thread SakeFox
I have used godaddy to host my maps on my server paying a little under
$7/mo (since i have multiple domains have the deluxe plan), but you can
get it for $5/mo and its full web hosting. Works great. its fast never
had a problem and think in about a year i had 1 unscheduled downtime of
about 2 mins and the scheduled ones where about 1-2 and happen rarely.
would be cheaper then the other host.

2009-01-14 Thread Cc2iscooL
That seems like a really bad deal. I use about 150gb/mo on fast download.

Right there that's about $25.50.

Now you need about a gig of storage, maybe two. $0.15 - $0.30.

Now you need to pay for requests. Say you get 20,000. $0.02

Total $25.67 to $25.82 per month.

It'd be useful for smaller hosts but you could get a really high end web
plan for the same price from a webhosting company.

Re: [hlds] New Topic: Map Hosting Solutions

2009-01-14 Thread Alec Sanger

Has anyone thought to use an S3 host such as jungledisk? The rates are
INCREDIBLY nice. They charge only for what you use.

Storage

$0.15 per GB-Month of storage used

  Data Transfer

$0.10 per GB of data uploaded

$0.17 per GB of data downloaded

  Requests

$0.01 per 1,000 upload requests

$0.01 per 10,000 download requests

no minimum payments, and for an extra dollar per month you can have direct web
access to all of your files. My last bill was only $1.41 for several gigs worth
of data. I'm not sure about the speeds, but I believe the files are placed in
multiple datacenters so not everyone is downloading from the same place.

http://www.jungledisk.com/

Just a thought. May not work very well. Maybe I'll test it this month.

Re: [hlds] New Topic: Map Hosting Solutions

2009-01-14 Thread Arg!
It seems odd to me that a lot of hosts are using their own webspace to host
the same files as other hosts. I get that that it would take some
organization, but i imagine that established GSPs would benefit from a
communal, locality based download server.

Eg, here in Australia as a small time server operator it is cheaper for me
to get a US host for downloadable content than to use a local one, but if
there was an option to pay a small fee to contribute to a local server i
would jump at the oppurtunity.

There would be a site but we've been far to busy doing sites for clients!

I agree the colour scheme is horrible thus is the reason we aren't using
now!

Anyway if that is the response I'm going to get for offering a solutions

Well, there is more than one way to look at it. As a rule, my guess is while
this mailing list isn't generally meant for that type of thing, there
probably isn't a hard rule against it. However, since people were asking for
a solution to this very problem, I suppose it's not such a bad thing to make
the service known to those who would enjoy it. Dunno.

Subject: [hlds] New Topic: Map Hosting Solutions

Just curious what other ops are using for hosting map FTPs for downloads,
currently I've been using hostmonster, but speeds have been very erratic.
Does anyone know of a host thats been really good with this type of hosting,
or are there any mods/plugins/cvars that can be changed to boost the speed
with which clients are able to download/unpack map files.

Ive found that generally a server running lots of custom maps has a
tolerance time of roughly 5 - 7 minutes for the average player before they
will disconnect and not bother downloading. Another thing that I think would
help immensely would be to list the speed and percentage of the download
complete, the bars really aren't enough of an indicator, though this would
be something valve would have to patch in.

Thanks,

Mike

Don't forget good speeds :v Many cheap hosts, while providing more bandwidth
than you could ever use in a month, will not do well with multiple
concurrent downloads at high speeds. I'm lucky enough these days to have a

2009-01-13 Thread Arg!
Also, correct me if im wrong but with goldsrc games you could have this nice
little banner image as part of the download where as now, at least in tf2,
it doesnt work that way?

As for map hosting solutions, unless it has already happened, ive often
though it would make sense for server operators in certain geographical
areas to chip in for a download server with custom maps on it etc, would be
pretty cheap to get a huge connection if lots of people were paying for it.

Re: [hlds] New Topic: Map Hosting Solutions

2009-01-13 Thread Cc2iscooL
I use my current webhost to do the transfers. The main problem right now,
well, with TF2 anyway, is the download bar isn't very good, at least with
.bz2 downloads. The actual download goes to the halfway point, which
confuses a lot of clients. A lot of people think the download is just really
slow, when it's actually a 30-40mb download for half the bar, and then the
extraction process and load. I made a topic about this a very long time ago
and had a few people say it'd be awesome, but unfortunately we never saw
anything from Valve on the issue.
