Re: [hlds] Server Bandwidth Help?

2008-08-26 Thread Steven Hartland
I spent quite a while looking at this and unfortunately they have made
some quite unfortunate design decisions with the project, which make
it mostly unsuitable for standard hosting.

This is mainly due to its reliance on dbus which is a Local only
protocol meaning that remote management without additional services
isn't possible.

This is really unfortunate and I hope they change their architecture
to use a more suitable framework in the future.

I have only experimented with it on Windows and I don't even know what
dbus is, but if its no good then its unfortunate.

If anyone is interested there are instructions on how to use the
server here, including dbus if it is going to run at a linux machine.

In the same sense that they need ventrilo to use ventrilo, or teamspeak to use
teamspeak, yes. If you want zero-configuration in-game VOIP you're stuck with
the srcds built-in solution, which can be quite bandwidth hungry.

Re: [hlds] Server Bandwidth Help?

2008-08-25 Thread Jake E
thanks for all the links, though my choices were *limited* because I was
looking to host a GMod server... So, right now counter-strike.com would be
my best bet. Thanks for all the reccomendatoins though. Also, one more
question. Which is better: Teamspeak or Ventrillo? Or is it something wierd,
like, to use Ventrillo i need Teakspeak? Thanks ahead of time, and have a
good day.

on both the server and vent or TS look for the coupon code on the front

Makes a huge difference.

If it's 500kbps - mine would die at 4.at 500KBps, probably 16-20 if
not more.

if this is on your home connection and assuming that it is, if you set
the max rate to 5000 and max cmdrate and update rate you can get around
10 people maybe 12... also make sure that you disable voice chat since
that will lag you out and don't do downloads of maps
