What I was wondering is who has the best deals out there right now and
also the different prices everyone is paying for them monthly.

You don't need to decompile the map to add spawn points. You can add
entities to a map file, and only the server needs to have the changes.
The map version won't differ. I used that method to add a chicken model,
feathers, and sound to cs_italy with no problems.

I chose my current server however on the fact that the support was so

Re: [hlds] Server hosting

2006-10-03 Thread Graham Robinson

I'm going back a while but that option in steam where it asks you what
your internet connection is is best set to your upload speed. That
setting is used when pinging the servers around you to ensure that not
too many are pingged at the same time if your connection cannot handle
it.

What happens however is that most people set it to 2MB+ when
(certainly in the UK) their upload speed is more likely to be 256K.
Therefore too many servers get pinged and the reply back takes longer
than it would if that server would have been pinged individually.

So what I suggest is to put that setting down to 256K and then let the
server browser fill up.

I have a 4.4Mb/s connection, on which i can consistently download
500kB/s, so i have my client set to 'Lan/T1 1M'. And i see many
server's who's pings are 20-50 show up in the main server list
between 200 and 500.

Do clients need to also take into account their upload speed when
setting the Steam--Internet setting? I only have 368kb/s upload so
could that be part of the problem?

You don't need to decompile the map to add spawn points. You can add
entities to a map file, and only the server needs to have the changes.
The map version won't differ. I used that method to add a chicken model,
feathers, and sound to cs_italy with no problems.

Re: [hlds] Server hosting

2006-10-03 Thread Chris Bass

Dallas? That's easy, either www.servermatrix.com theplanet.com or
insomnia365.com (all the same company) www.softlayer.com is where I have
a box. In almost all of those, you can get Windows for the same price as
Linux.

Jason O. Washburn wrote:

The box really doesn't matter as long as it can host a 32 person DOD 1.3
and have low pings. I am better with Windows but I could probably make
it work on a Linux box. I'm looking for a midwest location such as
Dallas or Oklahoma City. Thanks for the help guys. I really appreciate
the info:-)

What type of box are you needing to lease Jason.

Do you want a dual zeon or dual core box, or just a simple P4 3.0 gig
with a gig of ram.
You want to run linux or windows. What location do you need also.
Cost doesn't mean that much to me. I really like my provider from LA
CA.
 www.gizzmos.net
Nothing but linux fedora core 3,4 5 boxes.

Guys I was considering renting a couple more 32 player DOD 1.3 servers.
What I was wondering is who has the best deals out there right now and
also the different prices everyone is paying for them monthly.

 Thanks,

   Jason
