[hlds] Weird CPU usage

Hi all,

I just re-installed my server 2003 setup without ACPI as I heard that
without ACPI 1000FPS on Srcds was attainable (and achieved this myself on a
test box). Now with this disabled, I'm getting very very strange usage; the
srcds.exe process will spike up to 95-100%, then back down to 0%, back and
forth over and over giving the appearance of a sine wave. Before the
re-install, I never saw any usage like this.. it was a relatively flat line.
I don't know why this would happen. does anybody have any ideas other than
ACPI? Or perhaps a different way to attain 1000FPS?

Setup:

Windows 2003 Server EE x86 w/o ACPI (Standard PC in setup F5)

AMD Athlon 64 4000+

1.5GB DDR400

Gigabyte GA-K8U-939 mobo

IDE 7200RPM 8mb cache drive

2 10/100 NICs

Srcds 100tick 20 man CSSDM

Thanks for any help or suggestions :-),
Dan

attach process explorer to it to see what it's doing when it's spiking.

Running windows without ACPI isn't recommended, especially on newer
motherboards because ACPI enables quirks to get things to work properly.

RE: [hlds] Weird CPU usage

What should I be looking for in Process Explorer?

I didn't want to disable ACPI, but that's the only way that I've found to
achieve 1000FPS. There was another thing that I read about if you're
running a pure Intel based system (CPU and chipset and board), it is
possible, but I don't have that kind of money to shell out on a whim. Any
other suggestions, as I'd really like to have a standard install with the
best performance possible out of the server?

Dan,
  The difference between a 1ms (1000fps) and a 2ms (500fps) server is
insignificant and players can't see the difference.

It's not worth all the hassle to fuss with this issue, much better to spend
time on the day-today running of the server and focus on having a stable
server that delivers predictable performance for players.

FPS Booster fixes the 64 FPS limit on the Windows Source DS, try that.. works
fine. As Kevin mentioned It's not worth all the hassle to fuss with this

1000fps is pointless in SRCDS, and probably not physically possible
currently if actually had enough players that required that much I/O per
second.

Your main limiting factor is always going to be the tickrate.

Since nobody is going to be running a tickrate higher than 100, you only
need enough fps to ensure timely processing of players incoming and outgoing
packets.

512 fps produces plenty of I/O opportunities for a war server to always
ensure players receive the most up to date picture of what is going on.

512fps is also typically going to be plenty for most player numbers, unless
of course you manage to somehow get a computer that can run a 64 player
server at 100 tick and have every player on the server trying to send and
receive 100 updates a second. Good luck trying to sustain even 512fps in
that scenario with current cpu power!

Dan

The only way to really 'get' that many fps is:

a.) Use a real time OS, (RTX for windows)
b.) Don't use HAL/MPS at all (aka standard pc)
c.) Don't use windows at all.
d.) Figure out if you can use a GPS for an external timing source on windows

FWIW windows vista's sleep(1) return *about* 1.6 with HPET as it's
primary timer source, 1000 / 1.5 = 625fps.

So, the max you can go on vista is a little higher than on server 2003.
