Re: [hlds] [OT] Website builder for your server websites

2010-02-17 Thread Mark Gunnett
My Clan uses vBulletin (outdated version) But it still rocks. The only
problem is the price, and how resource intensive it can be if you have a lot
of people on the install. It requires a lot of tweaking, but it is the
mother of all forum systems, at least as far as I've run across.

But it sounds like you want something possibly quick and dirty. If you are
looking to host it yourself and for a free solution, I can't help there.
However hosted for you, and free, you could probably go with
http://www.proboards.com. They are a very very simple forum, yet if all you
need it for is discussion, then it should be just fine. There a plenty of
templates you can find by going to various other sites like Provision (
http://templates.proboards.com/index.cgi ). If I'm going to run a forum and
I don't want to invest alot of time on it, I usually hit up proboards. There
are some ad banners at the top of every page, but they are usually
ignore-able and you can get rid of them simply. I think you can even change
the domain that is used ( your-proboards-username.proboards.com ) to one of
your own domains ( forums.silicateillusion.org ) if you want, though I think
that is a paid feature as well.

So, Good luck on finding your forum solution.

P.S. @ All the people whining, don't just reply. I have half a mind to
filter emails from you guys since it is the same people EVERY OT thread that
complains. I have more junk emails from you, then I do from the random OT
stuff that hits this list, and the junk email that hits my inbox in general.

The fact remains that there is a proper place for everything, for a
reason. No one is on a high horse or thinking they're better than anyone.

There is a reason that different forums exist. Use them.

You can replace this by any example; Fact is, it is offtopic, and only
because knowleged people following this list does not mean that you just
can go offtopic and ask your "out of the world" questions. It is not
what the list is/was ment for, at least for my understanding.
Therefor, as mentioned by others, are plenty of irc chans and forums

Again, logical fallacy (Reductio ad absurdum; reduction to the absurd -
taking an argument to the extreme and criticizing the result doesn't make
you right.)

I don't think people understand exactly why people post OT stuff to this
list. This list is a bunch of server OPs and other people running gaming
communities. Between us we have a HUGE wealth of knowledge. Posting to
this list allows people to ask the people MOST LIKELY to know the answers to
their questions directly. Most of us do this stuff on a daily basis, and
thus we can share our experiences and make gaming better as a whole (well,
at least some parts of gaming)

To answer the OP, the community I am involved in running uses vBulletin, it
is not free but the big boss swears by it, so we have it.

Cheers,

Joshua 'Dislexsick' Bost

While I'm all for helpful discussion, he's right. Off-topic posts on a
mailing list serve no purpose other than to shit up what is otherwise a
concise and useful resource relating to server administration. Leave
topics like these and others to the relevant places. I recommend
www.srcds.com and the Valve forums...

OT (flagged or not),

Software/Hardware to build a Weppage has absolutely nothing to do with
this list. Exeptions might be Software to CONTROL an related server
(hlds/srcds) wich then would be a somewhat "related" off topic from the
list and not just spam.

Just imagine everyone here would come up with their offtopic questions

Re: [hlds] [OT] Website builder for your server websites

2010-02-16 Thread Alexander Baade
My recommendation would be to use MyBB instead of phpBB. I have
experimented/tested both and found MyBB to be: easier to use, updated more
frequently, and more customizable.

I would agree that this topic should not have been posted here, but it is
crazy how many stupid responses were sent saying it shouldn't be here. I
would hate to see what this looks like in any email client other than gmail.

Re: [hlds] [OT] Website builder for your server websites

2010-02-16 Thread Ook
I have a small user base - maybe a couple hundred semi-regulars, a couple
dozen or so that I actually know by name. I'm doing a remake of the private
beach map, and all I'm really after is a discussion arena - a place where I
can post status reports, and where peeps can come to discuss what I'm doing.
That is why I'm considering phpbb. I expect that the website regulars will
only be a couple dozen, so there won't be much traffic. I have to balance
how much time I spend on this with how much usage it will actually get - OP4
is not exactly the latest and hottest game out there.

What is funny is that I have half again as many players in my L4D stats, and
yet there is no community there at all that I'm aware of - I have no idea
how many people come to my server on purpose, and how many just end up there
because of Valve's server selection algorithms. I guess that is progress
LOL.

Depending on your user base I would strongly recommend you to have a look at
commercial products like vbulletin or invision instead. These are not that
expensive actually. My personal experience with phpbb few years ago was
constant struggle with security and functionality issues.

Re: [hlds] [OT] Website builder for your server websites

2010-02-15 Thread Ook
If I had left out the OT disclaimer, there would probably still be the
usual whining and belly aching. You might be right - maybe the OT
disclaimer automatically sets off those looking for something to whine
about. Maybe I'll try that next time ... I admit to some uncertainty -
the maturity level of this list has always been varied, from one extreme
to another, but the whine level these last few years is so much worse
than it used to be.

Five years ago the overall level of professionalism here was much higher
than it is today. We would welcome a topic like web sites for our server
and gaming communities, and have some pretty good discussions about it.
Today I bring the topic up and it got so badly derailed that many of
those that might have had some valuable contributions have probably long
since filtered out this topic. It used to take more than an OT topic
like this to get our feathers ruffled.

Now I'm whining

Logical fallacy - Reductio ad Absurdum

Now, lets all settle down, take some chill pills and sort out exaclty
what is and what isn't acceptable conduct.

This list is self moderating. This list does not have to match the
description on the Valve website to the letter. Given we are all
server OPs there is a good chance we also run communities too, and as
such a question about gaming communities based around HLDS is
acceptable. Anybody who disagrees is doing it for one of two reasons:
1) They are only here for update announcements - It is probably best
if you leave and use the hlds-announce list instead, or filter the
emails from this list.
2) They do not wish to help, but merely hinder the progress of the
pseudo-community the HLDS mailing list forms. Same thing applies,
just leave.

Of the people left here, congrats, you are the role models - People
willing to take a few minutes outta their lives to help other people.

Saying "this is off-topic" or similar instantly derails the thread and
causes infinitely more (useless) replies than would have occurred otherwise.

I also don't understand the whining about this. This guy was asking

this list?

OFFTOPIC

I am rebuilding an older tachometer meant for a 6V53 Detroit Diesel. I
need the RPMs to go up to about 4000 or 4200 (for a 230 chrysler) and
right now it tops out at 3000 RPMs.
Anyone know a reputable tach rebuilder?

Thanks so very much.

Actual we're using ClanSphere CMS and Simple Machines Forum.

Both are well supported and you have a lot of themes.
Actual we're building our own theme for ClanSphere.

I hope that is what you looking for.

2010-02-15 Thread Shawn Somers
It all depends on what you're after, realistically.

Many server communities use webforums of some type, and the majority of
those are at least partially PHP.

if all you wants is an informational page for your servers, PHP/CSS
Should cover the majority of what you'll need.
