Re: [hlds] Mani site down / DNS problem

2010-02-23 Thread Richard Green
Firstly can I commend Mani for what he provided in the early years of admin
and games plugins, we have used all of the known mani/beetles/SM but we had
issues with mani that eventually forced us to put all eggs in one basket and
go with SM. Mani at the end of the day is for some and not others and visa
versa for SM & Beetles.
With that said we are happy with the diversity of SM and will stay using SM
for the see able future.
And with that Simiancage commends all coders that have progressed gaming &
Admining what it is today.
Its just a shame that there now coding games for consoles and porting to the
pc>>>>>>> bring back the cs16 days!

Re: [hlds] Mani site down / DNS problem

2010-02-23 Thread Keeper
And for those of us who wrote their own plugins, we have helped Mani and
SourceMod become better via sharing. I know Mani and the SourceMM group
shared a lot in the past.

In the end, choice is important. These tools help server operators keep
their servers running. Some can add fun to the game, but in the end, if it
doesn't help groups/clans/individuals operate their servers, it won't get
used.

And BTW, 2003 was a good year :)

If we really go back to 2003 (or let's say 2004 when cs source and

Mani-admin and BeetlesMod. Not for like over a year. There was metamod
and some talks about rewriting it completely which i think happened
later on and thus Sourcemod is here now.

Mani-admin was a good plugin, very user friendly (not so install
friendly but everyone got it running who really wanted it), had multiple
things to make game fun. Votes, punishments, weapon restrictions, you
know what else. Maybe it's "shit" in some people eyes but it was there
when there was nothing else and still is a fairly good plugin. Elitists
seem to diss it the most. Really, it was free, you don't have to use it
if you dislike it.. Have some respect for the work of others?

Also remember it was made by just one guy. Sourcemod has now like 50
people behind it who make smx plugins into it so naturally it develops
more and things get fixed quickly.

If really Sourcemod is these days the one and only and all server owners
should move into it, maybe Sourcemod lacks something that Mani-admin
has.No, not the exploits. 1.2T fixed those afaik. If there is one, it
doesn't work with sv_cheats 0.

Re: [hlds] Mani site down / DNS problem

2010-02-22 Thread Matthew Gottlieb
The main reason I don't touch Mani was because of lack of updates and
originally lack of orangebox support. Once SM started to support
orangebox, there was no point in going to Mani. I did use BM for a
while and liked it... but it's a relatively simple system but he gave
lots of support and updates.

And SourceMod has been out for how long? And has done all of that and more from
the beginning, right?

2003 called and wants it's server administration software back. Stick with SM,
nobody worth their salt uses Mani.

It's been for a while. The next version ( 2.0 ) we are working on is going
to be more modular, and will be game based instead of one plugin fits all.
It will work for L4D2 down to HL2MP.

Sorry for the terrible phrasing, the only downside to SourceMod is the lack
of menu scaling. Besides that, it's 100% open source (I know Mani is,
however it is no where near as modular or customizable) and it's simplistic
to add features yourself.

RCON Lock, Kigen's and a few other plugins check and handle this exploit.
Any plugin can be dropped into a client so it's not a 'sourcemod' issue or a
'mani' issue but is simply idiot users trying to cheat the system.

My only issue with SourceMod is the fact that the menu's don't exactly fit
to the number of options (There can be tons of "white space" which makes the
mod look not that professional in my opinion.

Besides that, ditch Mani entirely (His site is back up now).

2010-02-22 Thread Keeper
XFactorServers was doing some website moving. We are back up and running.

As far as "noobish", well to each their own. Mani did a great job for a
long time keeping his plugin going with little or no contributions.
SourceMod has a great team of developers behind them, so of course their
stuff is of course up to date and more diverse. We now have a team in place
and are moving forward on the next MAP. Will it be better than some options
of SourceMod? Dunno. But it will give people a choice, and in the end
that's best IMO.

Re: [hlds] Mani site down / DNS problem

2010-02-21 Thread Michael Secord
Doing some digging it looks like the nameservers
(ns1/ns2.xfactorservers.com) are failing right now, even though their
site is up, but of course, their site use ns1-ns4.firehost.com. So, if I
had to give you a reason their site was down, xfactor server's
nameservers are failing right now. Probably a temporary issue and will
be fixed with the starting of tomorrow's workweek.

Re: [hlds] Mani site down / DNS problem

2010-02-21 Thread Matthew Gottlieb
1) Mani is a BAD IDEA.
2) VPS is a VERY BAD IDEA. Srcds doesn't run well on virtual servers,
from what I've read.

Re: [hlds] Mani site down / DNS problem

2010-02-21 Thread Jeff Sugar
What? Sourcemod is a million times more intuitive and easier to manage. I
literally cannot think of one reason to use mani, especially with the
various issues it has just from being so goddamn outdated. If you would like
some personal help switching over to sourcemod, feel free to send me a
private email or join #hlserveradmins on irc.gamesurge.net and I'd be glad
to give you a hand. Also, there's definitely a way to port over your
funcommands plugin. I can likely find you a proper replacement that is as
good, or better, than everything you are running on your mani install right
now

2010-02-21 Thread Cc2iscooL
Noobish? Sourcemod has virtually the same look-alike menus, and with plugins
you can do the exact same thing (plus a ton more) than mani, plus...when an
update comes out you don't have to wait for someone to update the binaries.

2010-02-21 Thread Jake Eisenman
TBH, my admins are too noobish to move to Sourcemod. Too used to it I
guess :/

I've been trying to work around with the supers so we can setup
sourcebans. Plus one of my coders made some modifications to funmenu.
Hopefully we can dump it (mani) on the plain server, but Hosties uses
some parts of mani to do it's work. Until i can code around that, it has
to be there.

Can someone post the IP or confirm the site is down? I just got a new
VPS for my clan and now we can't even put Mani on it, lol.

That's true, SourceMod is where it's at / has been for quite some time now.
Perhaps it's time to move up from child modding?
