[hlds_linux] Newbie question, plus racist player I'd like to ban from my server
First off, I'm relatively new at running an HLDS server. I can do it, but I wouldn't say I was actually an expert at it! Is there a Linux tutorial for this stuff that I can't find on Google because I'm a moron? I'm running Debian. Anyone know of any help here? Second, just a few minutes ago, I observed a player that was using his/her spray pattern to post what I consider to be white supremacist messages on the walls of de_aztec. This is MY server, and I am offended by this activity, as I would imagine any other players that would be playing on my box as well. I have the offending player's STEAM ID. How do I ban this jerk from my box permanently? And last, should I submit this Neanderthal's STEAM ID to VALVe or somebody? (Apologies to all you other fine and upstanding Neanderthals that may be reading this.) Todd Sometimes, when typing Linux commands, I think I get a pipe stuck in my colon. --Me ___ To unsubscribe, edit your list preferences, or view the list archives, please visit: http://list.valvesoftware.com/mailman/listinfo/hlds_linux

Brian A. Stumm wrote: You know, there is no reason to be a jerk. If you dont like steam then dont use steam. If your so pissed at valve that you want nothing more to do with their games then uninstall them. But coming to valve's mailing list to insult them is not very mature on your part. Take the flame bait elsewhere and leave those of us that are here to run servers and be helpful or get help alone. Replies like this show me what a hypocritical jerk you are. It is wrong for me to berate valve on this list, but it is fine for jerks/trolls like yourself to reply to others emails and insult them. Maybe you should remove your head from your anal passage too. I have voted with my feet and I have uninstalled 1.6 from one of my servers. I like CS and I really hope Valve make HL2 everything everyone is expecting it to be. I hope that by myself, and others being so vehement ("abusing") on this list makes valve look after their community better than they are doing. If I didn't give a shit, I would just pack up my servers, and jack it all in. But because *I* do care WTF happens to this game, I am getting annoyed and exasperated with what I perceive Valve is doing to mess such a good thing up. [hlds_linux] direction change or crash?
This is a multi-part message in MIME format. -- [ Picked text/plain from multipart/alternative ] Some people have said steam is free and we should be thankful of the updates etc etc. Well, Steam is not free. 1. Changes are “FORCED” upon us by Valve. 2. The updates are an absolute nightmare to get hold of during peak times. 3. You cannot refuse to accept the updates in 1.6 and have to play the altered game rather than the version you where happy with. 4. The bandwidth used to download on server and client is all payed for somewhere. 5. There is advertising on every client which would rival the most widely seen popups and ad-aware sites in the world. This is a regime. It is disgusting. Every single person I know / play with online thinks it is disgusting and is upset at the rapid decline of this game. It is (AFAIK) the most played online game currently around (By a long way I imagine) but this is about to end. A message to valve: If you are deliberately ruining the game to move players onto CZ or HL2 then you are wasting your time. People will either buy it or not buy it. The ruining of CS will only tarnish valves reputation. If this is not true then please sack some people whom have made hilariously bad decisions and get someone in whom understands the culture of online gaming, the idea of what Counterstrike is about and someone with a little taste / feel for the game. Have the people in charge even played CS? The most annoying feature (This time) is the huge cursor (reticule). I don’t understand the reasons why it is there or if it is staying. 1. If it is a bug the quality control procedures need re-establishing. 2. If it is not a bug and an attempt to make the game easier for “noobs” then what’s next recoil? Losing players not gaining them. 3. If it is just a great idea that someone there dreamed up then please as other people have suggested, create a forum for this and get yourselves a public beta group with which you can get feedback. The AWP delay. I can understand why a delay has been added to stop “snapshotting” or “awp scripting” but it hasn’t worked. Use forums / beta groups to find the best way of stopping this, don’t just release some half tested ideas on the community. I still get awp scripters on the public servers but normal users cant use the awp now. The awp is one of the important things about CS, It takes a practice to become handy with an awp and is an important part of the game. If publics don’t want them then they can disallow them. Updates. There is a major issue with the updating system. It is a mod of Half-life which seems to have been taken over by valve themselves (I don’t know the history). Now all the changes are “FORCED” without any option to every 1.6 client and server across the globe. Is this legal? Pre 1.6 there was always a choice, stay with the old binaries or update from the many FTP servers local to yourselves. The update would have to be better than the last one to have been played. If this system was still in place do you think people would be playing this update? No I don’t think so. I would like to be able to choose the version of Counterstrike I play, I would like to be able to decide for myself if I need a cross hair the size of my hand and I would like to be able to choose what version my server runs. Valve - “YOU WILL PLAY WHAT WE WANT YOU TO PLAY THE WAY WE WANT YOU TO PLAY IT”. Have I payed for Counterstrike? I own 3 copies of HL, I own 3 dedicated co-located servers full with public CS servers, I play 3 hours a night most evenings while my partner also plays CS occasionally. I am a victim to whatever sponsor valve forces in front of me while my game is loading and I was also intending on purchasing HL2 and CS:CZ.. If you have got this far then you will realise I am pretty upset. Well yes I am. Counterstrike is something valve should be proud of. CS has moved a long way beyond its HL parentage. Its amazing play ability has hooked millions of players around the world, everyone trying to out smart the other. Matches between very skilled players being broadcast across the net live, Clanwars taking place every night between bedroom warriors trying to think up amazing new tactics to beat there opponents. This is the future and in my opinion no other game is anywhere near it (YET). But… the tide is closing in. There are loads of little improvements that need doing, HLDS server needs optimising, VAC needs improving, HLTV can be improved, Demos can be improved, Update system needs to be re-engineered with proxy or alternative hosts allowed. Maybe give us a choice and not force downloads on us. I would be happy with more advertising on the client if more was done to improve CS, just makes sure its in the right direction. Thanks for your time reading this, I realise this is just my opinion but I’m sure I’m not the only one. Richy --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free.
