I can acknowledge that downgrading to the vanilla plain old Sarge Kernel
solved the Problem.

Thanks a lot!

 Hi,

for me it works again since the last update (before known as beta

with this version and simply dont't need a newer one.

Never touch a running system ;)

 Thanks,

Is it possible that it is not actually a problem with the kernel? Maybe
there are some options turned on in the earlier version that you have not
chosen in the newer one? Wouldn't it be great if that turned out to be the
case and we could figure out what those options were?

Maybe you should post to the Linux Kernel people. Maybe they can help. I
guess Valve should be the one's posting to the Kernel group since they
 have
the source to the game and could answers questions better.

Anyway, I hope you are correct about the Kernel version being the problem.
If you are correct Valve should be able to make progress correcting the
 problem.

Can you (and everyone else that downgrades and experiences a fix for the
problem) post the .config for both kernels? Perhaps we can find just
what is causing this.

Also, it would be nice if Valve would tell us the kernel version on
their build/test hosts. Perhaps along with glibc- and gcc versions?

Cheers,
Einar

Is it really a wise move downgrading to a development (odd) kernel?
Seems to me the potential downside is far greater than the benefit.
I can look for a bug/exploit list, but maybe someone knows without
looking it up.
It's also possible I'm missing something here.

Sorry for the empty message. Here is the text:

We're not using 2.5.6 for obvious reasons. We're now using Debian
Sarge 3.1Kernel for i386 SMP. That's working fine.

2007-07-24 Thread karumba

for most kernel races you need to first come into the system. i think
most gameserverhosts are *only* hosting gameservers are nacked
regarding installed/running applications. there is not apache, php,
mysql, whatever that could give you access to the server.

all in all, the potential downside is lower than the benefit, since i
have no benefit, when my gameservers are empty, right?

anyway, i think this is quite off topic.
