[hlds_linux] TF2 Delisting Information

2009-03-16 Thread Erik Johnson
Right now, we're not trying to provide a finely tuned quality difference
between servers to players looking for a server. Instead, we're focused on
finding and removing the very worst servers. This is why we're not showing
server scores in the serverbrowser. If we did that, we think it'd be very hard
for new servers to build communities, which a number of you have already
identified as a problem. Our first pass was a manual one, so we knew there
wouldn't be an exploitation issue. Going forward, we'll be making this into an
automatic process, with the following additions:

- Each player will be able to negatively affect a server's score only once per
day.

- We'll add a new message printed to the server console that tells the server
where it stands score-wise. It'll be focused on warning you if you're heading
towards being delisted.

Some minor notes in response to questions being posed on the list:

- Reserved slots won't result in any scoring implications if you're using them
correctly (i.e. have set sv_visiblemaxplayers properly, or are using a
SourceMod method)

- Bots aren't counted in the scoring.

- Delistings are temporary (1 month right now)

- Level changes do not affect scoring (i.e. players are not considered as
having disconnected reconnected over a level change)

- Servers with low connection counts are not subject to being delisted. This
means if you're testing something on your new server you don't have much to
worry about.

At least for now, this isn't meant to be a method to tell us or the community
as a whole how good a server is. It is strictly for identifying servers that
are doing really bad things like lying about their player count or redirecting.

Re: [hlds_linux] TF2 Delisting Information

2009-03-16 Thread David A. Parker
Thanks for the information, it helps a lot. Just one quick question:

 - We'll add a new message printed to the server console that tells the server
where it stands score-wise. It'll be focused on warning you if you're heading
 towards being delisted.

Will there be some sort of action admins can take or process they can
follow if they think their servers are being incorrectly flagged for
some reason?

I fully realize you don't want every admin running a misbehaving server
to spam you with requests for intervention. But at the same time, no
such system can be perfect, and it would suck to see that you are headed
for delisting and have no way to contact Valve about it.

 Thanks again,
 Dave

[hlds_linux] hlds: serverquery stays at same map even after changelevel

2009-03-16 Thread Marcel
Hi,

I have a problem with my hlds servers, that a server query reports the
wrong map after a mapchange.

Startup:
./hlds_i686 -game dod -port 27015 +maxplayers 6 +ip xx -tos +map
dod_zalec -pingboost 3 +sys_ticrate 1050

Qstat and HLSW show me the map dod_zalec

Now I do a mapchange, e.g.: changelevel dod_donner

Qstat and HLSW still show dod_zalec.

It only works if I do a mapchange with map dod_donner. But this should
not be the solution.

Also tested with CS 1.6 - same here. The query answer stays at the startmap.

It's a vanilla server. No Plugins or other stuff.

Any suggestions?

Cheers

Marcel

2009-03-16 Thread Dustin Doiron
Some of us on this list run businesses. Some of us on this list would not
like to deal with having to babysit their clients to ensure they're running
a friendly server. I'm trying to get a policy drawn on out on this, and
prefer to terminate the client's contract upon discovery of the delisting of
the IP, and appeal the delisting appropriately.

I've never played TF2, don't know or care about the problems. This is
simply from a business perspective.

Re: [hlds_linux] TF2 Delisting Information

2009-03-16 Thread Erik Johnson
Since we'll be limiting the amount of negative score that any one user can
assign to a given server over a period of time, this shouldn't be a major
problem.

This is somewhat the reason why we didn't push the scoring all of the way up to
the server initially, because we don't necessarily think that the servers at
the high, mid, or low end of the positive scale are necessarily better than
each other. We don't think this is really the perfect solution to rank a
server's goodness to the system as a whole.

It is strictly a way for us to identify servers that make most of the people
that connect to them want to go to a new server almost immediately.

This is somewhat the reason why we didn't push the scoring all of the way up
to the server initially, because we don't necessarily think that the servers
at the high, mid, or low end of the positive scale are necessarily better
than each other. We don't think this is really the perfect solution to rank
a server's goodness to the system as a whole.

It is strictly a way for us to identify servers that make most of the people
that connect to them want to go to a new server almost immediately.

What about having many bans? Banning known public hacker groups and
accumulating hundreds of banned steam ids that are kicked on connect?
Votebans and votekicks... We'll get penalized for this right?

Thanks for the information, it helps a lot. Just one quick question:

  - We'll add a new message printed to the server console that tells the
server where it stands score-wise. It'll be focused on warning you if
you're
 heading towards being delisted.

 Thanks again,
 Dave

Re: [hlds_linux] TF2 Delisting Information

2009-03-16 Thread 1nsane
Couldn't you verify the amount of players on a server using steam data? And
then show that on the server info screen?

Also do you ban IPs or IP and Port combination? I'm not worried about this
personally, but shared hosts do tend to re-use IPs with different port
numbers. So, would someone running a -999 gravity instagib 200/255 server on
port 27015 take down servers running on say port 27018/27013 with it as
well?

2009-03-16 Thread Erik Johnson
For now, we're banning entire IPs, but that could change. There have been a
couple of cases now where there are banned servers and positive servers running
on the same IP address.

Re: [hlds_linux] TF2 Delisting Information

2009-03-16 Thread Guy Watkins
If delisted, is it by IP or IP:port?
If just IP, someone could have many servers delisted at once.
If IP:port, a delisted server just needs to change ports to be reinstated.

It should really attempt to reconnect, kinda hard to play when you get
dropped every ~3 mins. Can you fix it? :D Pretty please :D.
