The server really only needs to know the checksum of the Valve supplied
files.  After all, it does not do a real file compare.

rebooted the box (to make sure there are no weird ghost processes running, 
although there did not seem to be before).  Then I created a whole new 
directory and did a full, clean install of CS:S into the new directory from 
Steam.  Now, the CS:S server appears to start up just fine, but it crashes if 
someone connects to it.  If I start up the server and then change the map using 
"map de_dust2" (or any other map name) in the console, the new map loads, but 
then the server hangs for about 5 minutes after this message is printed:

Because of sv_pure.  Specifically, sv_pure 2 requires that all client 
files match the versions on the server.

sv_pure 1 uses a whitelist instead, but anything on it set to from_steam 
(I think) needs a copy on the server.

[hlds_linux] Why do all the materials and sounds get downloaded?

I assume .wav files are needed to keep track of how long a sound
actually is (e.g. for looping sounds in ambient_generic)
.vmt files are needed to keep track of surface properties
(Footstep-sounds, dustclouds when bullets hit them?)
But i don't see any reason why a server would need all the .vtf files,
too - they look kinda unneded to me as the server doesn't do any
actual rendering.

This is probably a nooby question, but I was wondering, why does SRCDS download 
all the files? I don't see any reason why a server program needs to download a 
ton of .wav, material files, etc. It just seems "wasteful" to have all these 
files downloaded onto a server. It probably doesn't have much affect on 
preformance, but it makes downloading for the first time take even longer, as 
well as wasting precious harddrive space.

[hlds_linux] Counter-Strike: Source Update Released

An optional update for Counter-Strike: Source is now available.  Please run 
hldsupdatetool to receive the update.  The specific changes include:

Counter-Strike: Source:
- Fixed several problems with missing textures in community maps.
- Fixed a crash that could occur when stats get updated.
- Fixed a crash that could occur when displaying the scoreboard.
- Added "cl_show_achievement_popups", a convar that is on by default. Turning 
it off disables in-game achievement announcements.
- Restricted the range of commands that servers can cause clients to execute 
when closing the MOTD.
- Server admins will need to change the "cmd" key from a string to one of the 
following ints:
- 0 for no command
- 1 for joingame
- 2 for changeteam
- 3 for impulse 101
- 4 for mapinfo
- 5 for closed_htmlpage
- 6 for chooseteam

Engine:

Re: [hlds_linux] Steam support library problem

Hello,

I'm still getting the "Unable to load Steam support library" error on 
startup.  I am not running any plugins and I disabled SourceTV, but the 
problem persists.  I've been running an update with -verify_all several 
times each day, but it always says that the installation is up-to-date 
so it does not appear that anything in my installation is corrupted.

Anyone have any ideas?  Any help at all would be greatly appreciated.

[hlds_linux] CS:S Update Install Error "Segmentation fault"

Hey everybody,
 
I want to update my dedicated server to the new Version. But when I start
./steam -command update ...  ... I get the message "Segmentation
error".
 
I can´t start in -debug mode etc. - I don´t know what´s the problem. Until
the update the machine works fine.

More like 1 slot too few. I have 40 slots on start line, status reports 
40 and 2 of those reserved slots. Visiblemaxplayers is set to 38 so no 
one accidently uses the 2 extra reserved. Due to this reason i tend to 
keep them always free and not filled. However, 38 slot seems to be yet 
again reserved and no one else can use it except slot owners. This could 
be a plugin issue too but nothing seems to be wrong on my configs anyway.

Other explanation is that you have SourceTV enabled.
