RE: [hlds_linux] Howto get stable 500 FPS 64bit

2007-02-28 Thread J. Laws - Hi-Definition Gaming
Follow the directions in the url. You'll need to apply a realtime tick
patch and edit the jiffies.h file (doubling shift_hz 10). When you reboot
you'll find the fps is much higher.

Thanks for your answer but I`ve got a 32 bit kernel.

Hertz was on 1000 now on 1500 and I´ve only got 485 when nobody is playing.

RE: [hlds_linux] Howto get stable 500 FPS 64bit

2007-02-28 Thread J. Laws - Hi-Definition Gaming
You can most certainly get stable Source FPS on a 64bit kernel at or over
500fps (it's rather pointless, however). Follow that:

http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?s=b049b58954779c972aa3d
026a628be86&threadid=486424&highlight=recompile

Minimally you should pull a stable 666fps on 64bit. To hit the 1000fps
plateau you will need a 32bit kernel (yet again...pointless).

Subject: [hlds_linux] sv_downloadurl HL1 referer question

--
[ Picked text/plain from multipart/alternative ] Does the hl1 linux engine
support sending a referer header to verify the game server for fast download
(sv_downloadurl)?

The syntax given by Alfred from the hlds (win32) mailing list was
hl1://. I've seen the hl2:// referer come from a
source engine I've tracked on another member's game server but my hl1 server
does not send anything like this.

Some background info and other information on what I'm running/using:

I've updated using the ./steam command as of Feb. 13th 2pm eastern for the
game "cstrike". However I have a third party mod, Zombie Panic!, which the
server runs.

Rough Directory Tree:

--rootserverinstall
cstrike/
zp/
hlds_run
...etc

The server runs perfectly and I do not have AMXX or Metamod installed yet.

I have my sv_downloadurl set to a php file that grabs all of the client
headers (SERVER, ENV, REQUEST, SESSION...etc) and outputs to a file for me
to view. No header has anything that relates to the original server. The
only thing close is HTTP_USER_AGENT: Half-Life

I use the php file for testing to make sure the referer is sent. I test by
renaming a map on my client machine that the server is playing so I will be
redirected to download it. The php file is called and it stores the header
info.

>From the hlds mailing list I saw that hl1:// was supposed to be
there. I'm wondering if I'm missing a setting or config file to enable that
functionality or if it does indeed exist for the hl1 linux server.

More info can be provided if needed. Thanks.

Okay, but you can't run a server with the 64-bit binaries, that is why you

SetEnvIfNoCase Referer ^hl2://192\.168\.1\.0 allow_download

Add an .htaccess file to the main folder of your autodownloading. Inside
the .htaccess file add this (customize to your IP ranges and/or server IP):

SetEnvIfNoCase Referer ^hl2://192\.168\.1\.0 allow_download SetEnvIfNoCase
Referer ^hl1://192\.168\.1\.0 allow_download Order Deny,Allow Allow from
env=allow_download Deny from all

The hl2 is for any HL2 engine game (obviously) and HL1 is for any HL1 engine
game. If you have lots of servers on IP ranges, just input the ranges like
above with a .0 on the end to cover the whole range. If you have only one
game server ip, just put in the whole ip. This will limit your autodownload
files to be read, searched and downloaded via the game servers running on
those ip ranges. Nobody will be able to just go to
http://www.yoursite.com/autodownload and browse all of your files for
leaching, nor will other game servers be allowed to mooch. You would still
be able to provide anyone a direct URL to that file from HTTP, they just
cannot search or view anything.

I redirect downloads of custom maps on my servers to a web server I control.
Lately I've been noticing a few other HL2 servers leeching my bandwidth to
download the maps from me. I can set up a .htaccess file to limit this but
I've found something odd.

I can see when players from one of my servers are downloading the maps.
The entry in the webserver log has hl2://myipaddress:port as the referer.

xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx - - [08/Feb/2007:15:15:18 +] "GET
/files/source/maps/gg_boxical.bsp HTTP/1.1" 200 4786488
"hl2://152.105.66.176:27030" "Half-Life 2"

I'm guessing the ones with hl2://someone elsesipaddress:port as the referer
are redirects from other servers leeching the bandwidth.

This would be pretty easy to knock on the head. The problem is I have a lot
of entries that are obviously CSS clients but have no referer. Like this

xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx - - [08/Feb/2007:14:17:11 +] "GET
/files/source/maps/gg_bunkers_1.bsp HTTP/1.1" 200 3236916 "-" "Half-Life 2"

Does anyone know what might be causing this or an easy way to make sure only
players from my own servers can access the maps?

I could block accesses from the useragent Half-Life 2 and no referer but I
don't know if this is legitimate access or not.

Plz.

IMO about 70% users of this mailing list are fucking retard's or don't know
anything about Linux (anymore than how to run cs-server and chmod).

Dont please answer if you don't have the experience...

It might be true that the permissions are fucked up topo, but the message
"./steam: No such file or directory." comes because the operating system is
64bit and there is missing 32bit package. That is why you NEED TO INSTALL
ia32-libs package in debian.

If the reason were only wrong permissions, it would say "permission denied"
not "No such file or directory.". That message is pretty weird error message
about missing 32bit package, but thats the way it is. I know this because I
have 64bit installations too, and you cant run ./steam if you don't have the
32bit package installed.

RE: [hlds_linux] Source Tic Rate

2007-02-03 Thread J. Laws - Hi-Definition Gaming
If you have rented or are supposed to be running a 100 tickrate server
ensure that your cl_cmdrate and cl_updaterate are at 100 or 101. Then you
may use the netgraph 3 hud to determine the actual tickrate of the server.
On the right of the netgraph 3 will be In/Out. The numbers to the left are
kB (or KB, I forget)..ignore those...you want the numbers on the far right
with a /s on the end. For IN you should be seeing 100/s or higher. For OUT
you will be seeing the same # as the on-screen fps your video card is able
to churn out. If your in-game fps drops to 50, your OUT will show 50/s or
lower. If you are at 100fps or higher, it will show 100/S out. If they
seem locked at anything below that, you do not have 100 tickrate or you are
not properly configured.

Don't get me started on lack of 64 bit cpu support!!

The main downside is no VAC2, you get VAC1 when you use amd64 binaries.

Hi

My experience is that, if you run 64bit OS and 32bit binary, the operating
system will emulate the program, and it decreases performance and consumes
more CPU. I have AMD64 debian installations, and if I run hlds_amd binary
(the 32bit one) the server FPS is only ~200-300 and it consumes ~3-5% CPU at
IDLE, and with 10 players about 20%...

With the outdated hlds_amd64 binary the FPS is constantly 500 and the server
consumes about ~5-8% CPU with 10 players. I suggest that if you want to run
the updated 32bit binary, you're better have pure 32bit OS.

The outdated hlds_amd64 binary is IMO better and the hitreg is perfect.
I don't care how outdated it is, becauce the fact is that it performs much
better than the 32bit installation, and consumes less CPU.

I'll update to the 32bit installation only when the 64bit binary wont work
anymore.

REMEMBER: don't fix it if it ain't broken..

And btw, the hlds_run script doesn't autodetect 64bit processors anymore,
because valve has changed the script to run only with hlds_amd binary (even
if you have 64bit processor). And why is this? Because the 64bit binary is
very old, and they don't update it anymore. But it still works fine.

I can not get my servers to run for nothing. I do not see any problems with
the setup. I have updated, and still have the same problem. The server
starts for 2 secs then stops. The console does not have any errors
attributing to the problem. Is anyone else having problems?

[ Picked text/plain from multipart/alternative ] VAC is not nor ever has
been an "Anti-Cheat" program. From what we gathered in the many years of
running secure HL1 & HL2 servers is, VAC is just a detection and reporting
tool. If VAC detects a certian signature from a hack running while their
client is running it reports it to the secure center where it is
investigated then the steamid of the user is placed on a global ban list
which prevents these hacker and cheaters from playing in SECURE servers for
one full year. These players are also known as "VAC Banned Players."

As for your issue there was a serious problem with a few of the earlier
version of the HLDS that they call Stdio Builds. It appears as if the server
you are having issue with is too far out of date to handle the changes in
the VAC module. Add the -autoupdate to the launch of the server and let them
update accordingly. You may have to reupdate your steam as many changed to
the ./steam module have evolved when it comes to the updating process which
appears is what happened to your old troubled server of v1.1.2.5/Stdio 3213.
We used to have very many VAC issues with the version of 3421 and had to
revert back to an older version of 3327.

Best Reguarrds,
Krillin

Same problem here except we also get "Server Verification Error" on numerous
clients when using the 64bit binaries. That error means the server cannot
locate the Steam Authentication servers. It seems as if VALVe may be rate
limiting the old auth servers to conserve bandwidth.

You are using the amd64 binaries, right? So do I. My seven gameservers are
restarted daily and the chances are 60:40 they are secure for this day.

Maybe someone worked out a solution which is able to check the state of vac
protection via commandline? Hence a cronjob would be able to restart the
server as long as the vac is loaded successfully.

Hello,

It has been about a month some of my HLDS (cstrike) servers fail to download
the security module, so the server gets insecure (VAC disabled).

Here's an extract of the log file:
--
Downloading Security Module from Speakeasy.net ...
Error downloading Security Module from Speakeasy.net Server is not Secure.
No auth servers parsed
Disabling Valve Authentication.
--

I have to restart the server 2 to 5 times to get the security module
downloaded and my server secured again.

I've just tried to do a fresh install of hlds+cstrike and I still have the
same problem.

Any ideas?
Thank you for your help.

I'm not sure how long you've been on this mailing list Adam, however this
problem has existed since August 9th, 2005. They've been "working on" a
64bit version of VAC2 for well over a year now. There has never been a news
item from VALVe stating that they ever intend to provide 64bit VAC2. I
stopped holding my breath a long time ago, I passed out and moved on.

Thats quite funny, benefits are quite better for the time to develop a 64bit
Srcds and fix the issues with CPU Usage. Poor archectecture with the poorly
written netcode = bad. Increasing the number of "ticks" for each client
drastically floors the cpu usage leading me to believe that the netcode has
major bugs in it. Also, the instructions 32 bits of data versus 64 bits of
data is a huge thing especially with the system buses of our servers can
handle alot more throughput that its generating. Obviously people don't have
more than 4GB of memory running in their server, to want and need
this, however 4GB of memory will soon be the 1GB of 2GB of memory today.
Especially with the releasing of Windows Vista. But that is off topic. I
asked this question for a valve rep to respond, not immature people who
think its already been answered by people on this email list. Of course I
know this, however I want a little more out of Alfred.
In terms of Alfred, When?
Do I keep waiting or should I give up?
Beta? Do you have a beta version we can test?
These questions need to be addressed by the big guys and not from people who
are not working for Valve.

RE: [hlds_linux] Disabling Valve Authentication.

2006-10-05 Thread J. Laws - Hi-Definition Gaming
You can only use VAC1 with the 64bit binary (amd64). Any other binary
results in 32bit operation and VAC2. It sure seems as if VALVe has been
rate limiting the VAC1 auth servers as we have this issue as well. It's a
real shame that 64bit dedicated binaries were heralded by VALVe so much upon
release and have been castigated to the shadows now. There IS a difference
in the performance between 32bit and 64bit, I see it every day and will
never be dissuaded as to the non-necessity of 64bit architectures.
