Just trying to align this with
http://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/Valve_Time - nearest I can find to
that is 'When it's done' - so a month or two yeah? ;)

if the 64 bit binaries are not supported then expecting ANYTHING to work
is ludicrious. 64 bit isn't supported..speakeasy isn't going to
work..run the 32 bit and be happy..it's really easy to understand unless
you are intentionally being obtuse.

I didnt say anything about VAC2, at least i didnt mean to because
when i had a 32 bit server and when i used to start it it wouldnt
say anything about Speakeasy module being loaded, it would only
say VAC Secured or Not that is why i thaught the Speakeasy module
 only gets loaded on VAC1.
What i am saying is that VAC1 wont load. It used to load.
Last night i tried starting/stopping the server over 10 times now
and i cant get secured with VAC1(the speakeasy module wount
download). Port 27015 UDP/TCP is forwarded just like last time
when VAC1 did load.(I have no firewall on the machine itsself, at
least not yet) I just tried starting the esrver again (2 times)
but the speakeasy module still wont load.
I play on this one E-Frag server which also has VAC1 and they
>> also
said that it wont load, so surely somethings not right. My
question is, does it still exist? What could be wrong?
 Thanks

Don't get me started on lack of 64 bit cpu support!!

The main downside is no VAC2, you get VAC1 when you use amd64 binaries.

Hi

My experience is that, if you run 64bit OS and 32bit binary, the
operating system will emulate the program, and it decreases performance
and consumes more CPU. I have AMD64 debian installations, and if I run
hlds_amd binary (the 32bit one) the server FPS is only ~200-300 and it
consumes ~3-5% CPU at IDLE, and with 10 players about 20%...

With the outdated hlds_amd64 binary the FPS is constantly 500 and the
server consumes about ~5-8% CPU with 10 players. I suggest that if you
want to run the updated 32bit binary, you're better have pure 32bit OS.

The outdated hlds_amd64 binary is IMO better and the hitreg is perfect.
I don't care how outdated it is, becauce the fact is that it performs
much better than the 32bit installation, and consumes less CPU.

I'll update to the 32bit installation only when the 64bit binary wont
work anymore.

REMEMBER: don't fix it if it ain't broken..

And btw, the hlds_run script doesn't autodetect 64bit processors
anymore, because valve has changed the script to run only with hlds_amd
binary (even if you have 64bit processor). And why is this? Because the
64bit binary is very old, and they don't update it anymore. But it still
works fine.

Released

Valve - instead of ignoring us, can you give us some insight? Can you
say something? Why are you always so silent?

Specifically, I would like to hear your thoughts on:

- Is this update _really_ worth breaking so many mods and server add-ons?
- Why is CS:S not considered good enough for the CPL?
- Why are you adding features that the community did not ask for instead
of fixing long-time bugs?
- Why do you think that CS:S is played less then CS1.6 even though 1.6
is much older?
- Why are you ignoring the community instead of using them to your
advantage? (testing, betas, ideas, sales, etc.)
- If the community is not important to you what is?
- What are your long term plans for CS:S?
- Why do you think your solutions are the best ones?

I am not trolling for Valve bashing answers from the court. These are
honest questions that I have for Valve.

I run 3 public servers that together get 60,000+ connection attempts per
month and a CS:S community with a website that gets 350,000+ hits per
month.

My communities users spend money by renting servers (game, web, vent),
buying STEAM games (The Ship, etc.) and convincing others to buy CS:S.

Yes we are just a small voice but the point I am trying to make is that
we are part of the overall community. We are your end users.

I will not try and hide my disappointment in the last update but this
really sucks. The add-ons provided by Mani make my servers fun. They
add choice and switch up the "same old thing". Now that is gone (by
default).

For the first time I actually started thinking about either just giving
up and shutting everything down or migrating to a new game. My decision
has not been made yet, I'm still thinking.

I guess I just don't understand and am hoping for some honest
enlightenment from Valve themselves.

Am I asking for too much?

Indeed I don't run 64 bit though I can but choose not to as you can see from
previous posts, in a nutshell VAC2 doesn't work. I seem to remember the AMXX
chap stopping support for 64 bit a while back too.

Try running it without any plugins.

You're not running 64 bit? Cause I have seen before that 32 bit had a
higher version number... don't know why that is to be honest.

But still doesn't fix my problems :)

Recently my server hdd crashed so I had to replace it and reinstall CS on
it. It run perfectly for 2 years, but since my reinstall it runs bad

When it's in secure mode people can't connect to it anymore, they get the
following message:

Error! Server verification failed

hostname: [NL] Foute Baas Counter-Strike
version : 47/1.1.2.5/Stdio 2827 secure
tcp/ip : 80.69.78.200:27015
map : de_aztec at: 0 x, 0 y, 0 z
players : 0 active (24 max)

And so the server stays empty :(

When it's in insecure mode, well ... see for yourself:

hostname: [NL] Foute Baas Counter-Strike
version : 47/1.1.2.5/Stdio 2827 insecure
tcp/ip : 80.69.78.200:27015
map : de_dust2 at: 0 x, 0 y, 0 z
players : 24 active (24 max)

Who knows what might cause this?

I run the following scripts on it:

Currently loaded plugins:
description stat pend file vers src load unlod
[ 1] AMX Mod X RUN - amxmodx_mm_amd64 v1.76 ini ANY ANY
[ 2] Fun RUN - fun_amxx_amd64.s v1.76 pl1 ANY ANY
[ 3] Engine RUN - engine_amxx_amd6 v1.76 pl1 ANY ANY
[ 4] FakeMeta RUN - fakemeta_amxx_am v1.76 pl1 ANY ANY
[ 5] CStrike RUN - cstrike_amxx_amd v1.76 pl1 ANY ANY
[ 6] CSX RUN - csx_amxx_amd64.s v1.76 pl1 ANY ANY
6 plugins, 6 running

It's the same scripts I allways had running before the reinstall. And it's
not a problem which affects some players, all players who used to come
can't connect anymore and get the verification error.

Please help or advice.

Thanks in advance.

Gr,

Marcel

RE: [hlds_linux] Vac2 down

2006-09-09 Thread Knuts - jolt.co.uk
The rants have been going on for ages and ignored.

"It will be ready when it's done" That's been the stock reply.

Now if you ask about 64 bit VAC2 support you don't even get the courtesy of
a response.

Your rant will join mine in the Valve bin of "doesn't warrant a reply"

I suggest you hold your breath. Don't forget: the moment you faint, you
start breathing again.

Let's face it: we're not the highest priority group of people for Valve.
The "end users" are. And since the highest priority of any company is to
earn money (to enable its employees to feed their families), it's
easiest to target and listen to the largest group. The server admins'
concerns, such as "when will we get VAC2 on 64-bit?" (... and the 64-bit
server admins are still a subdivision of all server admins), are
second-priority to hooks for the end users, such as "Look at our awesome
mimics!"

It's possible that 64-bit support for VAC2 might need a larger rewrite
of the system. It doesn't make gameplay or graphics or sound more
breath-taking, it's nothing but a courtesy to people on 64-bit.

Fortunately, there's a wall that Valve will definitely hit sometime
(providing they still exist by then): 2036, the Year When All 32-bit
Unix Systems' Time Counters Overflow And Havoc Will Be Wreaked. However,
in 2036, we'll probably have an even higher bit-width going on, so
nobody will miss the old machinery.

Since the world is controlled by large companies which move very slowly,
there's no way we'll get too far in, say, five years. Sure, Intel and
AMD could say they'll cut 32-bit completely and make everybody shift to
64-bit, but that would kill all of their sales since lots of software
wouldn't be recompiled. (Just look at Apple's move to Intel: the average
Intel Mac user still finds that about 80% of all applications have to be
emulated. Nobody can force the people to recompile for Intel, so we
gotta emulate... which takes away even more of the motivation to
recompile in the first place.)

What we need now is to find a massive defect in the x86_32 architecture
that can only be fixed by moving to 64-bit. Until then... have fun
holding your breath, fainting, regaining consciousness and repeating the
last three steps ad nauseam.

Apologizing for the long rant,
~~ Ondra

RE: [hlds_linux] setup query

2006-08-21 Thread Knuts - jolt.co.uk
Try ./steam

Then it should ask you to try again, no need for -command etc the first time
round.

ok - a friend managed to open up some ports I apprently needed in order
to get my CS source server installed - I'm using the following guide for
the install:

http://www.cstrike-planet.com/tutorial/1/5

I get upto where I need to type chmod +x steam - that goes fine, but
then I type ./steam -command update -game "Counter-Strike Source" -dir .
and yet again it hangs on the text of:

Checking bootstrapper version...

I'm not sure if I've typed typed the ./steam command wrong for the
update or not, but am I missing something here? Why is it hanging on
that bootsrapper thing again? If someone is feeling charitable and can
help, PLEASE do!

Jay.
