Re: [hlds_linux] server hosting question.

2005-02-27 Thread Lumpy
FreeBSD is quite a good OS, however most game server binaries are in
Linux format and thus require the linux emulation that FreeBSD offers.
If you're planning/wanting to run anything in 64-bit mod, then you'd
probably be out of luck as I believe the emulators are only 32-bit
(I'd love to be wrong about this though). Fedora Core 2's probably
your easiest bet, and is popular enough that alot of applications
support it out of the box. I believe Source servers have issues on
FC3, so stick with 2 if you go that route. Gentoo's great, but
definitely not a novice, or quick install OS.

The only issue I've ever had with this script is it doesn't like
overly long usernames. You can find a modified version at
http://angrypanda.dyns.net:81/~panda/downloads/hlds_start with the
username length fix, and probably more bugs than the original.

The only valid games are hl2mp and cstrike. The hl2 folder is just

In addition you can't mix with HL1 servers, so you'll need to create a
secondary install path such as hlds_l2 copy your steam binary into
there, and then you can install both hl2mp and "Counter-Strike Source"
into there.

Correct, left mouse click or whatever it's setup as. Quake3 (possibly
2 and 1 as well?), and any q3 based game I've played in MP mode are
quite the same, even to the point where the word ready appears next to
a players name when they +attack to show that they're ready. If all
players do it, the map changes, if they all don't, then you can still
chat.

Re: [hlds_linux] How do I get HLTV working?

2004-12-30 Thread Lumpy
export LD_LIBRARY_PATH="/path/to/libSteamValidateUserIDTickets_i386.so"
I've also in the past copied it to /lib and even symlinked it. Copying
seems to work out better on a shared gameserver where accounts are
coming and going, whereas symlinking and exporting the Library path
are better for servers that you know will be in the same location for
quite a while.

Re: [hlds_linux] Steam asserts

2004-12-23 Thread Lumpy
Wild guess which very likely is wrong, but perhaps you don't have
linux binary compatibility installed, and steam requires linux compat
just like hlds_run and srcds_run. Though one would think it'd error
out, rather than partially work and die. Though as I type this I
recall someone asking for a FreeBSD version of the steam command as
well hlds_run/srcds_run and was told that steam works natively, and
just hlds_run/srcds_run require linux compat. That was far more than 2
hours ago though so I'm quite sure I'm not correctly recalling it.

The -dll command line paramter can be used instead of the gamedll line
in liblist.gam. Has the added feature of remaining in affect after a
game update overwrites your liblist.gam (seems more common with
windows servers that don't have liblist.gam set to read only).

Issuing a status command should tell you if it's up or not. It does

Re: [hlds_linux] Custom Map Question

2004-12-05 Thread Lumpy
Quoting Alfred from another email about this: "For custom maps that
have new resources (such as models or sounds) you
need a file in the maps directory called .res that lists all
the custom resources required by that map. It should contain the list of
files that a client will download when they get the custom map from the
server.
The format of the file is:
---
"resources"
{
   "blabla.txt""file"
   "sounds/blabla2.txt""file"
}
--
Note the "file" parameter, the .res file consists of key values pairs
and each value parameter must be "file" for map resource files.

This file is needed for both in game downloading and for the http
external downloader.

Re: [hlds_linux] CS:S and HL2mp update again

2004-12-03 Thread Lumpy
hl2mp maxplayers has be hardcoded to a max of 16 in the valve.rc In
other mails it seems that editting this file allows you to supersede
this limit. -maxplayers via the command line startup paramters should
allow you to specify less than 16 however if that's your goal. -ip and
-port also should work just fine still.

I recall that older versions of glibc cause errors. They were hoping
to get 2.2.4 and above working, but I still haven't. I'm pretty sure
2.3 and above work fine though. I used to run CS:S servers on FC2, and
it was a vanilla install to my knowledge, so I'd think FC3 would be
fine. Sorry that's all I can advise on that.
As far as dod however ./hlds_run -binary ./hlds_i686 -game dod should
force dod to use the i686 binary, rather than letting hlds_run
auto-detect the cpu which uses the hlds_amd binary which tries load
dod_amd.so which doesn't exsist.

soon as I start the server it states it can't log-in, due to the

Your command line paramters seem fine. In fact they work perfectly
when I tried them on my box. Adding +log on to the command line may
show why it's unable to initialize secure mode. Is it truly hung when
it gets to the end, or is it perhaps running and just waiting for
people to join. Issue a status command and see if it responds and what
it reponds with.

It doesn't need to be run from /compat/linux

And no to the jail questions.

The only thing coming to mind to me is file permissions. To install
the steam pkg/port would have had to be done with root, so perhaps the
directory still has root permissions and the user can't cache the VAC
module properly and thus it doesn't start.

It's been my experience that running ./steam by itself with no
paramters will cause it to update to the latest version of HLDS Update
Tool. Works fine with the new parameters even, as it updates itself
before reading any of the new parameters.

I'm also getting the same error when using ./srcds_i486 but am also

figured RH8 with glibc 2.3 should be good enough. I seem to have somehow
forgotten how to correctly use LD_LIBRARY_PATH so I copied the linux
emulation lib directory into my srcds directory, and attempted to start
the server again and got the following.
./srcds_run -game cstrike +maxplayers 12 +map de_dust -debug

No clue if any of this is useful at all. At least it now can find the

older glibc 2.3 than RH9 does or something like that.

The server does a tight loop to determine a very accurate CPU speed (use
as the baseline time for the physics and networking engines). If the
binary can't get two scheduler timeslots consecutively after trying for
10 seconds or so then you get this error.
I am investigating other ways to accurately determine the CPU speed, in
the meantime you need to run the server on a machine that isn't under
heavy load (i.e isn't competing with other apps for CPU time slices).

I'm guessing you tried this, but figured I'd post anyways. I would think
that it'd be reading the cpu speed from linproc, which I believe needs
to be mounted for this happen, as BF1942 also reads the cpu speed and
this is how it needs to be done for that as well under FreeBSD. Just my
-2 cents.
