Re: [hlds_linux] Mann vs Machine server requirements

2012-08-15 Thread Patrick King
Yeah, I had read original email from Fletch, and I just thought that each
server would take up higher CPU cycles. I didn't see the thing about having
32 player servers though.

The reason I ask is that I have a couple of 12-player servers that I use
for competitive matches that I would like to convert to MvM servers. I
guess I just have to fork over more money to NFO!

[hlds_linux] Mann vs Machine server requirements

Hey all. I'm not seeing a solid set of requirements for running MvM on my
servers. Some people are saying that you'll need a 32-slot server. Is this
true?

Thanks,

Re: [hlds_linux] Valve TF2 servers no longer have quickplay advantage

I recently added my new server to quickplay and I've never seen a single
person connect. On top of that, it has me started off as Downward Fast.
Guess I'm one of the unlucky ones that can't benefit from the system.

[hlds_linux] steam binary fails with "Illegal instruction".

2009-12-25 Thread Patrick Palka
chmoding it does nothing. The error "Illegal Instruction" is a kernel
error that tells us that the CPU is trying to perform a foreign
instruction. I read somewhere that the CPU must contain SSE for the
binaries to work; unfortunately, my CPU does not. is this speculation
true, that the steam binary is compiled with SSE?

strace output:

munmap(0xb759a000, 135168) = 0
mmap2(NULL, 528384, PROT_READ|PROT_WRITE, MAP_PRIVATE|MAP_ANONYMOUS, -1,

[hlds_linux] steam binary fails with "Illegal instruction".

2009-12-24 Thread Patrick Palka
- Gentoo Linux
- i586 processor (VIA C3)
- running under a normal user, in home directory

The binary that came with hldsupdatetool.bin updated itself to version
34; after that, any call to ./steam fails with "Illegal instruction,"
regardless of passed parameters.

Re: [hlds_linux] Tf2/l4d updates?

2009-02-13 Thread Patrick Shelley
Another few things i notice, and i dont know whether its supposed to be like
this, but, if i puke on a survivor, he/she is covered in my puke for x
amount of time.

But, if a hunter pounces on them whilst covered in my puke, i lose my
assists even though other common infected are still laying the boot in! I
dont think thats fair!

Then i noticed that i smoked a survivor ending up in him being incapacitated
and i lose my tongue grasp of him when he went down, only to have a boomer
puke on him and I got all the assists !!! Which was ok by me but the boomer
didnt like it too much !

Is it supposed to be like that?

Re: [hlds_linux] Tf2/l4d updates?

2009-02-13 Thread Patrick Shelley
While were on the subject for updates for tf2 and l4d - heres a couple from
me for suggestions for l4d...

Add a 'stamina bar' for meleeing

Prevent hunters being able to pounce on survivors being smoked

Give hunters a 'lock on' like the smokers have

Give tank a 'sprint bar' - maybe only usable once per tank

Re: [hlds_linux] Tf2/l4d updates?

2009-02-13 Thread Patrick Shelley
I agree we need something for the servers who change gameplay rules in both
tf2 and l4d

http://www.sidesteal.com/images/blacklist-tab.png

Here my original idea from september last year...

http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=722029

And then Valve could give us this achievement to unlock !!!

OK - nice one. I dont have autoexec.cfg on my machine, but i'll make one

Im just trying your server.cfg out Richard, but i was wondering if i put:

sv_search_key "BLABLABLA"

in the file called game.cfg on my own machine, would that save having to
type it in each time i load the game?

Re: [hlds_linux] Important notice regarding the HLDS mailing lists

2009-02-10 Thread Patrick Shelley
Great speech msleeper, if my daughter has trouble sleeping tonight i'll be
sure to read it to her...

In my one email on this subject, not once did i infer that thie mailing list
is/was/should be an open channel to Valve or indeed a support channel.

Ive pasted it below so you can re-read it:

---
Heres my 10 cents...

1) I cant be arsed visiting another bloody website to check for updates,
report issues, et al

2) The forums at steam can get so overloaded on an update its like their
being DoS'd

3) l33t et al are just gonna piss us off with nonsense blah blah blah

4) Maybe Valve DO read this list and find an increasing amount of their time
is taken up with filtering through arguments and flames and off topic
bullshit that we're ALL guilty of from time to time.

5) Lets focus on the age old staple of Q&A only here. No shit like "shut up
fattie" or "you run cracked servers" - because with that kinda shite we
might as well be on the forums anyway. Im not pointing the finger, as i said
above we're all guilty of it at least once.

6) This is deffo the best way for admins to communicate.

7) Sorry to Valve if number 4 is true - we're all gonna try an behave now
---

Now, if your 'pointing the finger' at me rage quitting the IRC channel, your
wrong on that too. I pop in and out of the channel to ask the odd question
here and there in the hope that someone extremely more knowleagble than you
(in fact i'd go so far as to say i cannot seem to find one instance of you
providing an actual solution to anyone's problem on this list) can give me a
sensible, polite answer - and i've been 'rescued' a number of times by Neph
and Richard. I see no point idling there all day when i simply contribute
more to questioning than answering. Hence, once i got the answer, i'm outta
there til the next time. Forgive me if your not referring to me, but as you
specifically mentioned me at the start of your email, i feel its best to
cover the bases.

My POV still stands, for the reasons i mentioned above. Especially number 6.

Re: [hlds_linux] Counterstrike Source DDos Attack !!! NO JOKE !!!

This wasnt a command Tony, this is the little crash application where you
put in the IP and it sends 'packets'? to flood the server. I downloaded last
night and did it myself to my TF2 servers and watched in HLSW as the
ping/latency went mental and timed my server out.

Re: [hlds_linux] New srcds exploit

2009-01-30 Thread Patrick Shelley
I ran this command thru HLSW and my servers crashed. Then i added
physics_select to the command blocker and tried again. Success!!

The output HLSW gave me was:

23:25:39 L 01/30/2009 - 23:25:38: rcon from "86.135.157.173:49466": command
"physics_select"
23:25:39 Can't use cheat command physics_select in multiplayer, unless the
server has sv_cheats set to 1.

No crash!!

[hlds_linux] Getting a dedi box and need a little help plz

2009-01-20 Thread Patrick Shelley
Hi list,

OK - im more of a web dev, and the server stuff goes a little over my head,
but i have a close friend who can deal with it well.

Me and my friend are 2 different clans and we want to get a deid box and
share the cost.

We want to stick my tf2 pub and his tf2 pub and one tf2 match server on the
box.

We're both in the UK and we've been discussing these:

http://order.1and1.co.uk/xml/order/ServerRootValue;jsessionid=A4EDEBBF151FE15D4C6DB93E15A311C4.TC32a?__frame=_top&__lf=Static

and this place:

http://www.poundhost.com/

Bearing in mind thats the total number of servers is 3, i wanted to ask some
advice from you legends before we take the plunge.

I hope you guys can chip in and help us make the right choice with some
explanations for your choices.

This is GREATLY appreciated - big time,

Pat

Re: [hlds_linux] L4D: Is there a hunter exploit out there?

2009-01-06 Thread Patrick Shelley
On the subject of hunter explooits - im gonna release this one into the wild
(but without the explanation of how its done) as i havent seen any evidence
of this particular one on the net.

With the hunter, u can go thru closed doors, walls, even closed safe room
doors.

I do this all the time on my server and other pub ones (i know i shouldnt,
but i cant help myself)

As long as the wall or door is connecting to another room or area (ie. not
the void) u can enter thru any cloased door or wall.

I can do a video if really needed.

Its really pissing my regulars off - but i just cant help myself !

We discovered it by accident.

Re: [hlds_linux] MOTD Questions

2008-11-18 Thread Patrick Shelley
Without loading this into dreamweaver, i'd try adding px to ALL your
measurements:

#border_left { position: absolute; left: 0; top: 0; bottom: 0; width:
6px; background: #442200; }

Should read:

#border_left { position: absolute; left: 0px; top: 0px; bottom: 0px; width:
6px; background: #442200; }

I aslo wouldnt bother with positioning the body in css. I'll load it up in
DW later, send me a lin to the images also if poss

try declaring font-size:0px; as sometimes this affects positioning.

Also what doctype are you declaring?

Also try using a div wrapper and floating the corner divs to the left and
right

Hi, thanks richard. When i was setting it to impossible the game mode
was displayed as impossible in the browser and hlsw and no matter what
the clients voted for , impossible was displayed. Anyways, its cool
now i know the drill. as for forcing or setting at a particular level
all my community wants it like that, i find that it eliminates the
gung ho aspect and forces a more professional approach to the game.
can we have summat that prevents it being voted on? please! fyi tank

For me - even at 1024x768 it cuts off the end.

dont put the html in the host.txt - just point to html page with the banner

[hlds_linux] l4d connection troubles

2008-11-08 Thread Patrick Shelley
Hi,

If i password my server - i tell my members to use openserverbrowser, find
us and connect via the browser.

This presents a few guys with problems that just take them back to main menu
- but for some it shows the pw box and they enter and connect ok (or not)

So i tell them to open console and type: connect 12.34.56.789:1234

Again this lets some in upon entering the pw and for some it chucks back to
the menu.

If i dont pw the server, they can connect via either the browser or console
method fine.

sv_allow_lobby_connect_only is set to 0

Anyone know why this is?

Also, i read about the sv_search_key and implemented that so they can create
a lobby to set the game up and their character - then to enter sv_search_key
my_unique_key into the console to join (as that was my understanding of how
search key worked) - but all it says in the console is:

Sending heartbeat to master server...
[L4DUI] CL4DBasePanel::OnGameUIActivated( delay = 0 )

and nothing happens.

Can anyone point me in the right direction here please?

Regards,

Pat

[hlds_linux] L4D - host.txt and motd.txt

2008-11-07 Thread Patrick Shelley
I have made a banner - 500x100 png

called it in host.txt - checked url - fine

made l4d.html and in motd.txt called it in there
http://www.iuhviruvhioruvorvuhrovhroi.com/l4d.html - check url - fine

changed level on l4d sever and expected to see the results - not fine.

does the server need a rebbot or something?

am i missing anything here?

thanks,

Re: [hlds_linux] L4D server.cfg

2008-11-07 Thread Patrick Shelley
Yeah, im trying to close it off to the public and just have it for our clan
at the moment.

I have set sv password - works, in HLSW its says is passworded

I told the lads to open console and use openserverbrowser and connect
85.234.155.43:27060 - but when they do it takes them back to the main menu.

Heres my server.cfg :

// server name
hostname "(=*CBC*=) Cream Bun Clan - L4D Private Server"

// rcon passsword
rcon_password "password"

sv_password "password"

//allow non-lobby people to join
sv_allow_lobby_connect_only 1

//Unreserve slots, aka fix the dumbass hibernating bug
sv_unreserve

//Let people know they can join ANY time!
sv_tags "cream bun clan,sidesteal"

//omg hard!
z_difficulty normal

sv_alltalk 0
sv_pausable 0
sv_cheats 0
sv_consistency 0
sv_voiceenable 1

// server logging
log off
sv_logbans 0
sv_logecho 1
sv_logfile 1
sv_log_onefile 0

// operation
sv_lan 0
sv_region 3

// execute ban files
exec banned_user.cfg
exec banned_ip.cfg

Am i missing anything here please?

Doing otherwise just creates headaches.

Launch all your games the same way, the same good ol' server browser - stick

I keep getting the following error upon startup:

Auto detecting CPU
Using SSE2 Optimised binary.
Server will auto-restart if there is a crash.
Failed to open bin/dedicated_i486.so (bin/dedicated_i486.so: cannot
handle TLS data)
Add "-debug" to the ./srcds_run command line to generate a debug.log
to help with solving this problem

Any ideas on how to resolve that?

Re: [hlds_linux] Can anyone confirm this?

2008-09-17 Thread Patrick Shelley
Yeah, its loooking likely, ive been following this with good reason...

As you mentioned above:

google will be able to match your clicking habits to your SteamID
and know who you really are.

And, no doubt they'll probably be doing this:

http://www.sidesteal.com/adreach.pdf

I have been working on this since the start of the year, I was going to send
a proposal to Valve - but looks like Google are gonna get in there first.
It's not the complete PDF, but it gives you the idea of where we were
heading.

I did run into larger obstacles, but the reason i got TF2 servers in the
begining was to explore this avenue. I proved it worked, we had a delievery
system where server admins could sign up, and we auto ftp the plugin we use
to show the ads, ftp the ads in, change/update the ads on a per map basis in
case an advertisers needed to change an ad campaign - all wothout the server
admin doing a thing - apart from a manual server restart, everything else
was automatic.

The plugin generated a log file we monitored, and as long as our server
could routinely access the log we could determine the earnings for that
server owner - publisher and advertiser statistics basically.

I bet you any cash, this is what Google are gonna head towards. Oh well,
little guy gets stamped on again.

I knew I shouldnt have sent my partner the pdf through gmail..
