In my opinion, dedicated servers should stay. It is better than far-away
hosting, more reliability and if not, control.
Central servers pretty much disables the opportunity to have fun, and to
install 3rd party mods.

Also, on a sider note, have you ever heard about AlterIWNet? Making a
concentrated server is just delaying the inevitable, hackers are always one
step past us.

However I really think that released dedicated servers would be really good
for the community, especially for regions where Valve isn't prepared to
host their own servers.

This would be nice as for Dota I used to run a few bots that would host

going to have it just Dota or custom mods as well if custom mods are in it
 that would be great.

We all know how well the Match making sends you to servers in locations
 not always great for players.

[hlds_linux] Dota 2 Dedicated Servers

2011-11-04 Thread Jonas Stendahl
Now when Valve is kicking it up a notch with the Dota 2 beta, are there any
plans to release the server binaries and let us test them? Or will Dota 2,
like HoN and LoL, have everything hosted by Valve?

I haven't read anything about that either yet, it'd be quite
interesting to get a few information on the whole server story.

I think Valve is running all the servers for Dota 2 but who knows for sure.
That would be a first. It doesn't sound like the type of game that would
benefit from community hosted servers like TF2.

Re: [hlds_linux] Dota 2 Dedicated Servers

2011-11-04 Thread Matthew Attaway
The last article I read on it made it sound like the ELO based matching
would only occur on Valve servers, but that the community could provide
servers to play on as well. Given all the work they've put into the
registered servers I imagine that will play a part with Dota2 server
hosting.

Cheers,
Matt
