I am only running one server on my box, with default port, and i get lag. (100
tick)
I have another server installed (66 tick war with srctv), and if i start it it
lags much later, counting from the start. But it does lag also, after a time.
And if it isnt running, the other server on the default port produces still
lag. Sometimes right after the start, sometimes only 12 hours or so later...
So sorry to say that, but this theory isnt correct. Maybe it has in your case
more to do with the 66 tick.

Another apporach here to get closer to these lags that bug us all so badly:
Ive heard about Providers claiming that they have no lag and after some
checkups on what would be diferrent to my setup it turned out they use a
single IP for every gameserver.
That would result in all the servers running on default ports, unlike
most of us who run multiple gameservers on the same ip with different ports.
I cannot do large amount of tests, because i have a _single_ box where
is currently only running one server on it. It is only an old P4 2.8
(without HT) running a Tick 66 server BUT i cant see the lag problem on
it ! It has been running crowded for at least 2 days and i also do not
see the 10FPS if i spam stats to the console.
So as far as i can tell, this one runs perfectly fine, this is also
debian starge with 2.6.16.31-1000hz-p4 preempt.
So mayB something for Alfred to work on (i have no idear if they have
multiple servers on a box or not) and some input for you to discuss,

btw: i hope admins getting lag tried shutting down all srcds but one...

- Pentium 4 3 GHz
- 2 GB dual channel DDR RAM
- Kernel 2.6.16.11
- HT enabled including the kernel SMT hyperthreading scheduler support
- The preemption model is set to 'Preemptible Kernel (Low-Latency
Desktop)' and 'Preempt The Big Kernel Lock'
- Kernel timer frequency is 1000 Hz
- Linux distribution is Debian 3.1 Sarge
- the libc6-i686 module is installed (NPTL support and optimizations for
i686 CPUs)
- srcds runs with the default tickrate at 250 fps
- the system load average is 0.02

until now i've not noticed any lags but i've seen two error messages on
the server console and a frame rate drop on the server side to about 10
fps when shooting at physic objects. this wasn't the case with the last
srcds version.

the two error messages that i've seen are the following.

on server start:

net.cpp (932) : Assertion Failed: 0 == iRet && iValLen == sizeof( iVal )
&& cSendBufSize <= iVal
net.cpp (940) : Assertion Failed: 0 == iRet && iValLen == sizeof( iVal )
&& cRecvBufSize <= iVal

and while playing on the server:

SteamStartValidatingUserIDTicket: Returned ESteamError 25

We have lags on:

p4 HT (singlecore)
Dual Xeon (singlecore but HT)
Core 2 Duo (dualcore)

all running debian Stable.

Kernel 2.6.16, 2.6.18, 2.6.21-rc3 tested, all the same.
Might be that this is also HyperThread related ?! i wont check that
though becaus i cannot fiddle around all the time with customer
(production) servers.

With and without VAC the same, cant tell difference in the timeframe in
wich the server stars lagging since its different all the time depending
on the player count.

A64 X2 Dualcore 32-bit mode Debian Sarge using 1000Hz 2.6.16 has instant
lag problems since the last steam update.
Before that it was running great, although in the last months it
sometimes needed a restart.

RE: [hlds_linux] Re: Lag since 3/13/07 on debian and FC 5 only ?

2007-03-19 Thread DEPRE Gaetan
So, I guess we'll need these information :

Dual xeon 1core FSB 533 512 KO L2 Cache : Lags
Dual xeon 1core FSB 800 2 Mo L2 Cache : Lags but after a few hours the
server is running
Dual xeon 2cores 4 Mo Cache : No more lags

Debian Etch 2.6.20.1 on each box.

Could the CPU's cache be responsible (in part) of this lag problem ?

Debian 3.1 is sarge and etch 4.0 yes

Preemption Model (Preemptible Kernel (Low Latency Desktop)
Preempt The Big Kernel Lock
1000 hz
No Patch installed

Ok, I'm compiling the same setup, just hoping the lag issue ain't comming
from another kernel option :)

Do you have a tip for me Which Kernelconfig would be best for CSS
Gameserver? Patches?

Not much to say, having 1000HZ is the base, I use preemption as well on my
setup.. Then you need to know your hardware to disable the unnecessary
modules..

Last question: Some say the lag issue ain't there if VAC is off, are you
running with or withour VAC ?

Still no news from VALVe, Alfred, moday is included in weekends oversea ?
We definitly need answers now :)

Best regards

Good to see someone getting some constructive 'research' of the ground,

As reported earlier, we have no lag on FC2 with kernel 2.6.20.3 @ 1000HZ..
Good to see someone getting some constructive 'research' of the ground,
as opposed to just moaning at Valve.
