I myself don't care too much about LANs personally since I haven't
been playing one for ages. But I spend a fair share of my time
developing and I need a LAN envirounment for that. And it does
suck if I *need* to have a INet connection up for it. (Not that I
don't have it up all the time anyway, but it may go away for
technical reasons or the Steam server may be down and then what?)

Ahh but then the advertising that is incorporated into Steam won't go out to
all the big Lan parties.

Couldn't have that now...

I think people ask this question inspite of having read that
because it is so unbelievable, hoping for Valve to realize what a
terrible idea this is and saying "hey, yeah, that's really not a
good thing, we'll look into making LAN games possible without
requiring an INet connection". The way it is now they don't need
to have a LAN mode at all since it doesn't make any sense. In
effect they are killing all LANs. Terrible, terrible idea. I don't
like it at all. To be frank, I fing hate it. Addon and MOD
developers now always need to have an INet connection running in
order to test their stuff. This suxorz major time.

Nah, we'd have Eric (Decon) to keep us company.

But back on the subject... is valve really trying to kill off the userbase
that it strove to attain?

I might be a rare case here, but some of us DONT have broadband. Does
that mean that we can't play? Nope. but what it does mean is pure and
utter hell when updates come. I can currently drive 15 minutes, download
the update on a t1, burn it, and then take it home and have fun with it..
or I sit on my dialup with steam that only gets 24600 and wait for hours!

All I have to say is that HL2 single player better not check with Steam,
because, if it does, Valve's gunna screw itself over.

In other words, Valve, you're seriously screwing yourself over, in the
future, I dont want to be sitting with some kids and then mention half
life and they all start laughing because of your demise due to
over-protectiveness, which leads me to my next point.

You are not Microsoft. We do not rely on your products to make our PCs
function. You could dissapear tommorrow and all that would happen would
be like "Hmm, Valve's gone? That sucks big time! I really liked
Half-Life", now if MS would do that pretty much worldwide panic/cause
for concern would happen.. (Linux ppl, you know where i'm coming from)

Microsoft got away with WPA because of it's sheer size and control.

Think about it.

Thanks for you time,

Adam

According to the great words of agenthh:
> The question still remains: will we be able to play any Steam games

> A direct answer, please?

The answer is no. If you followed the links Alfred posted, the answer
is in there, and it's very clear. This is a quote steampowered.com:

http://www.steampowered.com/index.php?area=faq&id=1050915505,27362300,1050915726,98098300

"Any Steam game, when played on a LAN or otherwise, requires that each
individual client be able to authenticate via the Internet.

At a LAN party, this means that Internet access must be available to
every machine on which Steam games are being played."

If everybody read the information provided before asking questions,
well, there's probably be nobody left using this list...
