Could it be a possible problem from where the last update for hlds_l (not
vac) was dl'ed from. If the servers in question were dl'ed from the same
mirror, then they would be common in high cpu usage, while the others show
no abnormalities. A shot in the dark, but something besides a bug seems to
be at play.

I made the test once, for one hour.

I did not see any use to pingboost 1 and pingboost 2.
pingboost 3 seemed to give a result near external pingbooster : minus 5 to 10 ms on
the ping and real higher (nearly doubled) CPU usage.

Next try is HLBoost, the MetaMod plugin (for this week-end maybe).

Are you absolutely sure about this? I seam to remember that ping boost
has no effect on freebsd systems due to differences in it, and that
there were certain kernel tweaks that could be done in it's place to
sort of get the same effect, but even that was an area that people
weren't sure of.

The same problem exist when you launch the HL/CS servers in insecure mode.
At least at our debian server, don't know about freebsd...
The only way I find to defeat the high CPU usage is to turn of the
pingbooster...

No I did not.
I won't have time before beginning of next week fortesting them either.

But next week I'll re-install from scratch the four 16 slots servers, with the beta
hlds_l and without launching them in secure mode at all.

Or there's a huge bug somewhere (the tried I made show me than only pingboost 3 was a
CPU eater (doubler or nearly), whereas the only pingboost option that gave us a lower
ping with FreeBSD).

Question : did you made your tries with VSM and then without VSM ?
Or the other way round ?

Would it be possible that a "previously downloaded" Security Module, even when the
server is launched with "-insecure", causes this CPU mess?

Hmm, I discovered something... The pingboost option 1 and 2 seems to double
the CPU usage!?! They have increased the CPU usage but never doubled it...
Is this the way it's suposed to be or is it some bug? I'm thinking that it
is running in pingboost mode 3 even while you type 1 or 2...

Same results here for the same test : it is not VSM.

If it is a bug, it happens both on Debian (your kernel) and FreeBSD (linux emulation
is based on RedHat 7.1).

Have you tried the beta server ?

Re: [hlds_linux] CPU usage problem

2002-09-11 Thread User KAMA

Ive noticed the same thing. My servers are hogging the system.
The only thing i can think of is VAC.

My system is running on FreeBSD with dual PIII 500.

A couple days ago I was able to run them flawlessly on that HW. but today
its impossible. Even on the matchserver where we only run VAC, without any
cpu hogging plugins. the only plugin is wwcl, which runs once at logon.

It seems to be able to run ok up to 10 players.

/Bjorn

The thing is... It's not that I am lazy, it's that I just don't
care.
