Re: [hlds_linux] bots and clients trying to download nav files

Depending on your maps I'd recommend to keep the .nav files downloadable.

https://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/Navigation_Meshes
...they're not just for bots, but also for naming certain areas and for
hostages (a hostage map without its .nav will freeze them to their spot
making it impossible for CTs to lure them to the safe house).

nav files shouldn't be added to the download list, clients don't need the
nav files to connect and play on a bot enabled server (bots are there to
ease startup in early hours). As it is now if you generate nav files (for
maps that don't have them by default) you are forcing clients connecting
to the server to download those nav files. Using sv_downloadurl somewhat
mitigates the issue - two download requests are sent: .nav.bz2 and .nav,
if both fail (404) client gives up.

Is anyone aware of a cvar or source mod plugin that will let remove the
nav files from the download list?

Like he said, in CS Source nav file contains place names also.
FrontHall, Backyard, etc that gets shown under the radar and in the chat
if someone triggers automatic command like Enemy Spotted. The place
name will automatically included into that message in the chat. It's
just not used much in custom maps as nav files are usually missing anyway.

RE: [hlds_linux] Bots not loading since steam update?

2005-06-21 Thread Brian \Duck\ Holmes
I had two problems,

First the bot's weren't always joining after map change, this was
something of a random problem.

Second, when the bot's did join on a busy server they commonly joined
before the rest of the players and started the round meaning that by the
time the real players got in the game the bots had run to the other side
of the map with the bomb and dropped it or bought weapons they then left
for the real players to pick up giving them an advantage.

This cfg solved both those problems, but if you use it make sure you put
the exec bot.cfg at the END of server.cfg otherwise it delays all your
other settings.

Re: [hlds_linux] bots sv_region

2003-09-18 Thread Christopher Choo
Hi,

Would it not be a better idea to use country codes instead of region numbers
instead? Then Valve themselves could specify the continents using their own
software provided to determine if a server is in Asia, North America and so
on. Having Asia as a single region is a huge mistake, as players from Korea
would not be able to properly connect to my server in Singapore. Neither can
you expect say an Eastern Russia player connect to a server in India.

Most connections are routed through the United States. If there is one
region that doesn't need that kind of granularity it is the USA.

Country codes (US, DE, NL, SG etc) make a lot more sense than numbers which
the server admins would have to remember. And it's been a much better
determinant of region than anything else over the past few years.

 Me wrote:
..or at least put Central US in there :P like... what would Chicago be

Well, it seems like it could very easily be organized in a hierarchy:
World Continent Cardinal Points Country, with values added much
like admin levels in admin_mod, adding up the numbers to produce the
applicable region code. Obviously, countries with small landmasses
wouldn't have but the one Region, but for geographically larger
countries, it would sure be nice.

 World: 0

 Continents: 1 through 6 (Antarctica doesn't count :P)

Cardinal Points: Maybe 7 through 12 (NW, SW, NC, SC, NE, SE, which would
be plenty for pretty much any landmass)

Countries: 13 through whatever, hitting the high-volume, stable
countries (unlikely to be broken up due to civil wars, etc)

I'm in Texas, USA, so let's say it would fall in the SC (Southern
Central) category, which happens to be numbered 10.

I would add up the numbers:

 0 - World
 1 - North America
 13 - USA
 10 - Southern Central
 --
 24 = Southern Central USA

 Server-side: sv_region 18

I mean, I realize it could possibly get complicated for the server admin
if they can't do basic math, but it sure would be a helluvalot more
flexible. You could get as specific as you neede to be.

I don't know the best way to do it, maybe, but there's got to be a good
way of narrowing it down like that, server-side. Of course, there'd be
a GUI for the client (probably for the Win32 HLDS as well) to choose
from a list, just like is common for timezone settings. I mean, if you
choose Africa, that's a *huge* frickin' continent, and people in
Johannesburg might easily be closer to a server in India or something, I
 don't know.

Anyway, that's enough braincells on *that*.

I don't get all this fuss about the regions. As i understand it,
the regions were not introduced to show you the server next door.
They were introduced to prefilter the server list in order to not
have the client update 50,000 servers in the server browser. It is
meant to limit the servers show in the server browser to a
manageable number and keep the load for updating info about these
servers low. The region is used to show you the servers most
likely to give you a low ping, being near you.
A player from Korea wouldn't connect to a server in Singapore
because he will still check the pings before he connects to a
server. The differece is that the update of the server list in his
browser will be faster since all the servers that are likely to
have a 500+ ping are filtered first.

If you live in NYC and get a server in LA, it's unlikely to have low
latency. The US is the biggest single market for Valve's products (I
assume), and as such, surely it can get a little extra attention :)
The idea is to pare down the list of servers you query, making the
process much, much quicker and simpler as well as giving you a much
better chance of finding a local, low-ping server.

It has been quite some time since I tried that one, it was one of the first
we attempted to run and I don't remember what the deal was on it. Seems
like I could not get it to run at all and chalked it up to incompatibility
with CS 1.5... I could be wrong about that though.
That is listed on the old projects list at
http://www.olo.counter-strike.pl/ , waypoint files might be difficult to
find now.

Planning on trying BSDBot: http://gamershomepage.com/csbot/ today
because that one is new to us and it sounds like it is based closely on
HPB_bot code. In reality, almost all bots are based on Botman's code I
believe, some are just more modified than others.

I've had PLBot running on my server, with bot protection on from Adminmod.
You couldn't kick them manually, but they were kicked automatically just
fine, and didn't have any errors. Ran it for at least a week with no crashes
to my knowledge. Server isn't online atm, and for some reason the waypoint
files can't be accessed since www.plbot.com is down.

That is a good thing because we have spent literally days and days
evaluating every nix bot for CS and NONE of them work reliably.

 To go down your list...

JoeBot will run but it will also crash your server multiple time daily.

HPB_bot kind of works on CS in that it does not crash the server (unless
you kick the bots manually or autokick them as people join). Although this
bot works great for TFC (if you don't kick them) you will be disappointed
or frustrated at best if you try them on CS.

PLBot: That's funny, know anyone running that thing on a nix server?

PODbot: No nix support last time I checked.

BSDBot: Never heard of this one and I can't believe I missed one after
trying all the above plus half a dozen others. I will look into it and try
it if there is a nix port.

The ONLY bot I have had any success with on CS is RealBots. This one has
outstanding AI and you would honestly swear you were playing humans if it
is configured correctly. The downside is you can't force them to stay in
the game over mapchanges unless you use the minbots/maxbots (Internet
mode)
settings. This works great but just like every freaking bot we have ever
tried, they *will* crash your server occasionally when they are kicked. It
don't matter if you use the auto kick as people join or if you manually
kick them, that sz_getspace error will get you.

Another problem with RealBots is you can't name them. Rather you can
name them but by the end of the day they will all have the same name and
there is nothing you can do about it but restart your server. The only
solution is to accept that fact and put one name in your bot names file,
we
use RealBotAI. That way they are named RealBotAI, RealBotAI(1),
RealBotAI(2), etc. This looks infinitely better than having them all end
up
with the same random name like Mom, Mom(1), Mom(2).

They do crash the server anywhere from one to five times a week (because
of
auto kicking) but that is better than the pub sitting there idle for 60%
of
the day which is what will happen if you run without bots.

The only stable bot we have seen is HPB_bots on TFC and DMC as well as the
built in bots in VS (which are also custom HPB_bots). We don't kick them
and they never crash the server. It takes time to find good waypoint files
though, don't expect much with the default ones. The bots will be anywhere
from completely useless to annoying because they get stuck on a ladder or
in a corner. The bottom line is if you don't have the time to spend making
your bots work right, don't bother because they will do more harm than
good.

Re: [hlds_linux] Bots crashing server

2002-09-01 Thread Rick and Cheryl

Thank you anyway for trying Frank! I think the problem was partly related
to the names having a space in them, I have not had a crash since I removed
it. I did take them down to 4 instead of 6 before changing the names though
so that may have also been part of the problem.

They have always been a little unpredictable. Occasionally they will go
into spec mode instead of leaving when a player joins and often I will have
to kick one of them still playing 15 mins into an Avanti map when there are
14-16 players on the server. That kind of thing is no big deal, as long as
they don't crash the server I will be happy!

Re: [hlds_linux] Bots crashing server

2002-08-31 Thread Rick and Cheryl

Yes, it is commented out of the liblist.gam file, that was required with
adminmod. however, I also run halfd and it is started in the args= line
from the halfd.cfg.

That is the correct way to do it and basically it does the same thing your
doing, it adds it to the args when starting the server.

This is a linux server that has been running in the past with these same
bots just fine although I was only using 3 of them. Additionally, this is a
tfc server so that may create a different set of problems as well.

I am still investigating the problem, I would hate to have to remove them
but that may be the only solution in the short term.

 Hi there,

I know there is a bit problem with HPB_bot, but try my startup files, i
dont have any problems with HPB_bot now.

 Startup command:

 ../hlds_run -zone 1024 -pingboost 2 -game valve +maxplayers 12 +map
 crossfire +ip 62.61.140.34 +port 27015 +localinfo mm_gamedll
 dlls/HPB_bot_i486.so

 The Liblist.gam file:

 game Half-Life 1.5
 secure 1
 vac 0
 startmap c0a0
 trainingmap t0a0
 mpentity info_player_deathmatch
 gamedll dlls\hl.dll
 // gamedll_linux dlls/HPB_bot_i486.so
 gamedll_linux dlls/metamod_i386.so

NOTICE: The dlls/HPB_bot_i486.so file (HPB_bot file) is de-activated in
liblist.gam file Since you are running it in your startup command
 script...

 Hope this will help you..

Please notice that im running Linux. Can't remember if you can use
pingboost at Windows servers, and im running HLDM server

 Regards
 Frank
