Sign up to be a content provider for Valve. You used to be able to do
this on the SteamPowered web site, but the link is no longer there.

I'm not talking about all the banners when you browse around STEAM,
chat, get updates, etc. I'm talking about the one you see when you are
downloading maps from *my* server and/or connecting and validating
resources against *my* server. If that content isn't provided by me,
then I don't know what is. To date, I have seen no banners in that
particular box, so my assumption is that that one remains blank until I
put something there.

Valve? Any response on this? Why is that banner box empty when the
others contain ads? How do I fill it?

It usually shows a banner from the content server (althought I've seen it
empty sometimes), not from the server you are connecting to. You could do
this in the motd.txt...

That one always shows empty for me, I think it's a bug - the box
shouldn't be there :)

The MOTD is one thing... but, actually, you guys are confusing two
different things. Mad is talking about the dialog box that displays
when you connect to any server. there is a progress bar above the
banner box. The progress bar shows Establishing Connection,
Validating resources etc. The banner box is ALWAYS empty when you are
connecting to a game server.

Everyone else is confusing this with the Steam Update dialog box. The
Steam client update dialog box shows the logo of the content server.
You only see this when you are updating your Steam client, as that is
the only time you are truly connected to a content server. This came up
on the list right after Steam was released. You guys have selective
memory.

Mad has a point. If you are Dl'ing the map from my game server, for all
intents and purposes, my server *is* a content server. Even if you
arent Dling a map on connect, if this box is going to be empty during
the verify resources phase of the connection, why not let us use it?
The content server obviously pushes the image into this box, so why
can't our game servers do it? My guess is that there is a server side
parameter that we havent fingered out yet that we could use for this
purpose.

Re: [hlds_linux] Content hosting provided by...

2003-10-22 Thread PiTaGoRaS
No, I'm not confused. I know what dialog box is Mad talking about and that
box IS NOT always empty. I've seen the content server banner there sometimes
while conneting to a server, I'm sure. If it's not shown now, it must be a
bug or something similar.

I also think is would be a nice idea, but actually it's not possible. There
isn't any server side parameters, the banner is simply downloaded from an
url given by the content server.

Maybe it should go to the Steam's 'todo' list, but there is still a lot of
more of important things to improve than a little banner... meanwhile use
the new motd file, that was my suggestion.
