I'd put 20 cents (NZD) on the server engine updates being independent
of the client updates.
Regardless, clients are forced to update while servers are optional. If
a server chooses not to upgrade until it's stable, no one will be able
to play on your server anyway.

if a server chooses not to upgrade, it will lost its players. so, the
server are forced to upgrade anyhow. thats no different.
chris
My point was -- dedicated server engine internals *ought* to be (and my
20 cents says they are) independent of the client. e.g., the updates
today -- there were client updates with the new hl2mp maps, and there
were server updates. The server needs the new maps, but the client does
not need the new server engine.

Oops, this was my anti-cheat protection that forced clients to set

oh hell yea! beta dist would be invaluable.
as for the (us) poor sots in winders land
Linux does not need a nice gui. but dos needs the dos console mode.
somebody at valve (alfred?) fixed this up so any winders complainer
simply needs to be told to go run hlsupdate again.
hopefully this thread diversion will result in an hlsupdate beta testing

don't you guys know the server version 24 is totally fuxored on windows?
and no messages coming thru from hlds list?
do you just shut the list server down when things go bad?
like they do on each and every hlsupdate?
do you need help in the form of some non-VALVe hosts to test your
updates before you release them?
let me know.
I would rather help test than lose all my clients.
so you will comprehend the magnitude, since 1/1/2005, my servers have
had over 450,000 players join. (50,000+ unique steam accounts).
these updates are burning a large number of people.
actual responses from people like Alfred are very much appreciated.

Everyone on my server, including myself, is getting this message spammed
to their console once a second, but only while alive:

Can't use cheat cvars in multiplayer, unless the server has sv_cheats set to 1.

I tried connecting with an all-default .cfg and it still does it.
Nothing seems to be effected, but it's a little noisy.

Cool.. I cannot seem to get it though. It's been stuck here for 15

Updating 'Counter-Strike Source Shared Content' from version 22 to

I tried restarting a couple times.. what else can I do to get this

2005-02-17 Thread Alfred Reynolds
To fix a couple potential file download problems (in particular being
able to access files outside of the game directories) files names given
to various engine functions ("exec" in this case) cannot contain "\\" or
":" or "..". This change was released a couple of weeks ago
(http://www.steampowered.com/index.php?area=news&id=391).

RE: [hlds_linux] Steam Update released

2005-02-17 Thread Alfred Reynolds
We just released a quick fix for Counter-Strike: Source servers, run the
hldsupdatetool to get it.

( the original release rolled clients and servers forward to 1.0.0.15
but wasn't a required update. Code in the server browser however
enforces the client and server run the same version (meaning new clients
couldn't connect to old servers) so we have just done a quick, single
file update to roll back to 1.0.0.14 as there is no need to force this
version change for Counter-Strike: Source servers. )

If I remember good, it started when they fixed a bug with metamod
(problem with hitboxes), in june or july 2003.
They fixed this, and the server was eating 20-30% more CPU...

Thanks Erik, I can't wait. I hope you guys start releasing them more
frequently or start releasing them without any forewarning. Last update, our
servers caught about 30+ cheaters after the first day but they would have
caught more if the people who create the cheats were not aware of the update
and updated their cheat software an hour after the VAC modules was released.

Thanks again and I'll be looking forward to getting some of these cheaters
off of the server for a few days so the rest of the guys can have some clean
fun..

I am STILL running a 10 person linux server, and the CPU usage (and
associated player-side lag) is awful. This on the same machine that could
handle a 32 person CS 1.5 server without breaking a proverbial sweat.
Something else is going on here, whether Valve wants to fess up to it or
not, and it only started happening after they release Steam.

Yeah, but as you might also notice, the game has changed quite a lot
since then.

Sure it has, but that still doesn't explain why we only see this
problem on Linux servers. Also, I'd be willing to bet my UT2K3 server
runs maps with way more entities and it doesn't use nearly as much CPU.

I know, but a game being patched on end probably suffers a little.

I myself can relate to the prblems, my first CS server was a 233 K6-II,
now it's a 2,4 P4.
I don't have the problems you are having, since I only run a single
server, but I can understand your worries.
I may not have made myself clear, I DO agree that the usage is crazy, I
just don't think using that particular argument is valid.

In regards to the update,

Processor usage is still goofy high and the Memory leak is still there.

Any ideas guys?

Can you tell us exactly what the problem is with the compiler? Being
honest, Cstrike used to be a community project, and it did good then.
You've got a stupid amount of people wanting to help you guys fix this
product, you might as well let us have a crack at it.

If you say "Intel is giving you problems with the compiler." Fine, that's
cool, say what the problem is, I'll bet that someone on this list has a few
hookups at Intel that might be able to help things along. Although I don't
understand why the compiler has anything to do with Intel at all in the
first place? Regardless, tell us where the problems at, and we'll jump on
them. Nothing like having 200 pissed off geeks ringing your phone!

/Rant

I know this will fall on deaf ears and that it's all been said before
but I really feel the need to get it off my chest.

Valve do you actually read these mail lists or are they a little out of
focus up in your ivory tower ?

This is a joke just go back to the old way and hand out a zip file, the
players hate Steam and as a Server company we hate it too you can't
handle the load when an update is released it was OK the first few times
we put it all down to teething problems but by now you should have had
it sorted you have not and you will not it will just be another problem
we all have to learn to live with.

I get the feeling Valve has become a company that is so blinkered now
that you it cannot see what is going on around it or have too much money
coming from particular companies to ignore their products. (read between
the lines)

The HLDS is 5 years old you would have though that it would be running
smoothly not eating more CPU then games like CoD or BF1942.

I have noticed a huge drop in HL servers and players since 1.6, every
week I get customers asking to swap from HL servers and I am more than
happy to move them at present.

Valve take off the blinkers before it's too late !

Rant over/

Any news on what plugins this update has managed to break ? and I see
this update had the requested Intel fixes :P

Steam doesn't appear to be sending anything over updates, in fact my

No idea if this is a problem with the actual update or just the Steam
network though.

Btw, I would think the smartest nthing to do with major updates like
this, would be to release the server bittorrent file BEFORE you release
the rest.
Some of us would actually like to do womething other than wait for a

using as much time telling people why they can't plsy as I do slamming
