If that's a problem I could probably rig up a bot to do it, if people don't
mind (though then it wouldn't have the @valvesoftware.com sender address

EDIT: I was about to suggest that the times for outages mention the time as
well, until I saw that was the exception and not the rule. Never mind

Excellent suggestion. Hell, it would be great if they simply added the
hlds and hlds_linux emails to the subscription of that thread... so that
they don't have to go multiple places!

Rick Payton wrote:
Another option Kevin would be to subscribe to the thread. Even though it
won't be directly to the list like you want, the e-mailed post update
DOES contain the contents of the post, so you don't even have to visit
 the forum.

Though I too would rather have en e-mail sent to the list.

Thank you. Could we get such notifications to the lists as well? That

 would be excellent if so.

I will tell you that 1) you would need more room for batteries than you
could have for a Data Center if you want more than a few minutes of backup.
Batteries are there until the Diesel Generators can kick in... Also, few
municipalities will let you have enough Diesel generators to actually handle
a Data Center because they are so loud... All you can really do is get
power diversity if possible, and try to protect against transient power
outages.

All of this is moot if your internet and network connectivity is also cut

We run a DC ourselfs (well i'm eployed at an ISP with a huge DC). With
pre-messures as 300 linked accu's(for first 30sec of an outages) and 4 huge
diesel generators, we still suffer outages from time to time due to
unforseen weather conditions. May it be extreem hot weather, may it be
extreem storms etc.

Even redundant ciruits can blow up both at the same time.

I'm not saying that they can control a storm. What I'm saying is that
if you are building an authentication system used by hundreds of
thousands of people, 24/7/365, in every continent in the world,
wouldn't it be a good idea to have a mirror up somewhere else?

According to the steam forums this is what they did to get Steam up
and running this weekend anyway.

I feel a bit bad as in the UK this storm isn't being reported at all
and I've heard that 4 people have died in it from Google world news,
so I might just duck out of this after this post.

I'm not much for Steam either, but did it occur to you this isn't
necessarily an
issue of resources? There was a post on the Steam forums regarding a
DoS attack.
http://steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?s=threadid=48382

It came up for me this morning, but doesn't appear to be available at
the moment.

Last night late when the steam site came back up I think they posed that they were
getting DOS'd and the site was on the same pipe as the rest so everything was down.
Wounder if that is the case again today.
Nice single point of failure.

You have a good point, but I don't think all blame can be attributed to
valve and their lack of handling DOS attacks. I mean come on, SOME
blame has to go to the attacker.
I personally lay no blame on valve for not being able to handle an
outside attack, I don't think they had that in mind when designing their
system, and even if they did have it in mind, there isn't much you can
do about a DOS attack (unless you have control of a higher level router-
which I don't think they do).
Regardless, it sucks that I can't get to my server (through the steam
client) and it sucks that I can't play CS through steam.
Of course, then again, how do we know valve is getting DOS attacked?
They could just be making that up to cover their own ass :)

Yeah because we believe everything that Valve tell us!

It's amazing how they get DoS'ed when it suits them around a release or
a steam update!
