[Hornlist] HornRoller.com - News for Hornists

2005-04-12 Thread Robert Douglass
Hi everyone,
Quick introduction: I'm Robert Douglass, a *former* horn player who now
makes web pages. Since I still love the horn, even though I no longer
play it, I've made a new website, HornRoller.com, dedicated to horn
news. I'd be happy to have you visit it, there are already many
interesting articles. I'd be even happier if you would use the contact
and submission forms on the site to announce any horn related events or
news. You can submit links to sites, images or articles and I will see
that they get published.

You can also contact me on the site via the contact form, in case you
have questions or comments.

Enjoy!

Re: [Hornlist] HornRoller.com - News for Hornists

2005-04-12 Thread Robert Douglass
PS. I'm covering the 2005 Northeast Horn Workshop in Purchase, NY; if
you're planning on attending please take your camera and notepad so you
can send me a full report after the event. I'm especially keen to get
photos and earwitness accounts of Lowell Greer's hunting horn
presentation. I'm hoping it'll bring back memories of when he used to
play those things in the corridors of the University of Michigan School
of Music (much to the chagrin of the other teachers, I'm sure). Thanks!

Hello Bill, you might have the last available copy by

PayPal. Your choice. If you chose PayPal, let me know so I
can send you a payment request via PayPal. The piece is
worth 45.- EUR incl. packing, registered airmail. Delivery
within less than a week.

Greetings from Munich (have to hurry to a Lulu rehearsal).

[Hornlist] Changing mpc when changing horn

2005-04-12 Thread Steve Freides
Do most of you, if you regularly play more than one horn, use the same
mouthpiece or do you find a favorite mouthpiece for each horn? I assume the
reason for playing more than one horn is that they're different, perhaps one
smaller bore and one larger, and I'm curious to know how many of you change
your mouthpiece, and in what way, to accomodate the difference in the horn.

My guess is that most of you stick with the same mouthpiece but, like I
said, I'm curious to know if some people don't and what their reasoning
might be.

Thanks.

Re: [Hornlist] Changing mpc when changing horn

2005-04-12 Thread Robert Douglass
I always stuck with the same mp when possible, but sometimes it doesn't
make sense (like when playing on a descant horn, natural horn, baroque
horn). In those cases it really pays to pick a mp that fits the horn. If
I were just switching between double horns I'd always keep the same mp.

Re: [Hornlist] Changing mpc when changing horn

2005-04-12 Thread Alan Cole
I use the same mouthpiece all the time -- changed mouthpieces a few years
ago now use the new mouthpiece all the time on all my various horns,
after previously using the same old mouthpiece all the time on all my
various horns.

The reason for changing was not any dissatisfaction with the old
mouthpiece, but rather the discovery that the new mouthpiece offered
noticeable improvement.

So therefore I follow the advice offered by Alexander Pope a l-o-n-g time
ago (1711 A.D.), to wit:

Be not the 1st by whom the new is tried
Nor yet the last to lay the old aside.

2005-04-12 Thread Aleks Ozolins
Listers,
I think it takes several years before a horn player develops enough
sensitivity to equipment to even start thinking about different mouthpieces
for different horns. This realization comes from years of trying and buying
and subsequently selling different mouthpieces... and realizing that I
really couldn't interperate the differences meaningly until recently. Of
course, switching from a modern single or double to a natural horn or vienna
might requires a different mouthpiece CUP even for an ameteur, I don't see
any other exceptions. Does anyone disagree?

2005-04-12 Thread Pandolfi, Orlando
I think it is a proven fact that not all mouthpieces work the same on all
horns. I have begrudgingly switched cups and shanks to accommodate a different
horn (but always use the same rim). My beloved teacher at Juilliard, Ray
DeIntinis used to joke that if he were to be robbed on the streets of NY, he
would say Take everything but my mouthpiece. He never switched horns either,
starting out in the NY Philharmonic with a silver Kruspe and moving to his
pre-letter 8D. In typical Pandolfi fashion, I LOVE to play different horns, so
my paraphrase to Dinny's line would be Take everything but my rim!

I have a horn teacher that basically insists that all of his horn students play
a shilke 27 in gold(preferable) when they are of a certain skill level. The guy
knows what he is talking about - former CSO and first student of Clevenger, but
I am not the average player. Switching to the cup improved everything from my
low range to my highs with much better attack - yet still able to keep a sweet
tone. The problem is that I have the lips of a tuba player and though I play
very well with this mouthpiece (2 years), I have noticed that sometimes notes
just won't want to come out because of the small diameter. I love the rim shape
and the cup, so does anyone know of a similar mouthpiece in gold with a
standard size diameter?

It's not exactly the answer to the question you've asked, and while I don't
know the Shilke 27, I have seen Clevenger's mouthpiece, and don't recall the
diameter as particularly small-- but why not try a bigger reed on the
difficult notes (open the opening of your lips in the mouthpiece--do it
mentally and it should likely have a physical counterpart). Just a thought.
