[Hornlist] Le Chou sur la Rue

2007-04-03 Thread HornCabbage
Steve F wrote about the Cabbage's forthcoming visit to scenic New Jersey:

This brings to mind that Cat Stevens song, "Miles From Nowhere."  No offense
intended to anyone who lives around there - it's lovely country which I
drive through on a semi-regular basis, although "just off" an interestate
highway isn't my favorite part of the area.

I had trouble booking a location ON the interstate, Steve.

Herr Cabbage, your engagement is conspicuously absent from said web site -
perhaps they have discovered who you are?

I sent them oodles of publicity information, and told them to
edit it to suit their needs. Evidently they did.

gotta go,
Cabbage

The Yahoo search tool, at least, stores the index file locally, on your hard
drive. It works just fine even you're not connected to the Internet.

To do a thorough seach the hard drive must be indexed, and this should take
around an hour for a small drive, say 50GB or so.

This data is kept on the hard drive itself, and that is what is searched,
rather than the files themselves, which is done during the indexing process.
One can understand the logic of not having to wait an hour for each search.

I wouldn't want my index data stored by Google or Yahoo.

RE: [Hornlist] NHR files

2007-04-03 Thread Jeff Stewart
I've tried both the Google and the Yahoo desktop search programs. I
personally like the way the Yahoo one presents the results better.

I use it to search for text strings; it can look inside things like zip
archives. I don't know whether it can search things like database files,
etc.

I also indexes your email files, so you can locate things like the license
code for that software package you remember paying for but can't find the
receipt...

Try Yahoo Desktop search. It's free. It works in the background to build
an index of your hard drive(s), then, after the index has been built, you
can pretty quickly find what you're looking for.

A Windows XP machine (the current Microsoft Operating System for PC's for
the last five or six years) has a Search function one can run on anything,
be it the entire local drive, part of the local drive, or a remote resource
like a network drive. This comes as part of the Operating System - no
additional purchase or expense required.

Microsoft's latest OS, Vista, also includes similar functionality, I'm sure,
although I haven't seen it for myself yet.

Re: [Hornlist] files

2007-04-03 Thread Carlisle Landel

Alon,

I'm assuming you are maybe talking about issues of the horn list
email that you are archiving? Or is it something else. No worries,
there are solutions.

If you are using a Mac, all files are indexed for title, and files
with text are indexed for content. You simply use the "Spotlight"
feature, or do a "find file", and you are good to go. The spotlight
feature also works within the mail program to search your mail files.

I barely organize my computer files anymore--I just put them all in
one place and search for the one I need.

If you aren't using a Mac, well, I'm sure somebody has kluged up a
solution someplace. ;-)

Best,

Carlisle

Saying "file" is like saying "container." There are all kinds.

I've been a professional software developer for 25+ years. If you'll write
me off-list, and tell me more about what goes into your file, I'll be happy

[Hornlist] Dennis Brain Video

2007-04-03 Thread hans
Hello all, I just had a phone conversation with the owner of
the rights of the Dennis Brain video (Beethoven Sonata, and
the introduction of the Brain family by Barry Tuckwell, our
past president). So the owner of the rights will allow me to
produce this important film- and sound document for every
horn play on DVD. There are just formalities to be cleared.

I have not established a price, but the price will be
moderate & within the fraqme of standard DVD prices, and I
will publish it on subscription, so every owner will receive
a single numbered copy, including a digital watermark, to
avoid the wild illegal copying.

The preproduction work is done allready. So watch my
announcements. I promise, there will be nothing added, as I
respect Dennis Brain as one of the greatest heroes of the
horn in history.

If you are interested on this DVD, you might write me off
the list without any obligation for the moment.
