I did not hear it live, but I thought there were certain passages that seemed to be suddenly over miked or boosted by the engineers. (not actual) Otherwise, the balance I thought was pretty good. I find it distressing that there are few "G" movies because I feel most PG and PG-13 movies are too grown-up for my 10 year old, but I don't have a lot of choice - his friend's parents think they're OK, and there's little else to see at the movies. Consider this my vote for _more_ G movies. -S- > Perhaps too much information even for non-U.S. readers. > > Howard Sanner > [EMAIL PROTECTED] > who hasn't seen a movie, pornographic or otherwise , in a > year or more > > > ___ > post: horn@music.memphis.edu > unsubscribe or set options at > http://music2.memphis.edu/mailman/options/horn/steve%40fridays computer.com > ___ post: horn@music.memphis.edu unsubscribe or set options at http://music2.memphis.edu/mailman/options/horn/archive%40jab.org

[Hornlist] New York Phil Opening Night, R rated review, D minor Dvorak
"R rated" comes from the motion picture rating system used in the U.S. The criteria for each rating can be read at: http://www.mpaa.org/FlmRat_Ratings.asp There is at least some debate in the U.S. about how useful these ratings are. There is also some feeling that much of the public considers anything rated G, PG, or PG-13 to be too "tame," thus encouraging studios to produce R rated movies gratuitously. Also, there are almost no NC-17 movies because most theatres in the U.S. are in shopping malls and their leases prohibit showing anything "stronger" than R, which means an NC-17 would almost certainly lose money. (NC-17 used to be called "X," but the X rating was dropped because the pornographic movie industry adopted it.) Perhaps too much information even for non-U.S. readers. Yes, the Berlin Horn's CD is spectacular. They were also spectacular in their live performance at the IHS meet in La Chaux-de-Fonds in July. I wish everyone could have been there. Re: [Hornlist] New York Phil Opening Night, R rated review, D minor Dvorak
I thought the whole orchestra sounded fantastic. The brass were especially phenomenal. Alan Baer the tuba player was incredible. The trombone section was great as usual. The horns were superb. Mr. Myers has the ability to play the most controlled pianos, and "fire in the whole" fortissimo, truly amazing. I like the freshness and excitement of their performance. During Ma's interview during the intermission, he stated that they ran the piece once before the performance. Hence all the life wasn't rehearsed out of the piece. All in all an excellent concert. For visual, I like the front of the balcony facing the stage or almost anywhere on the floor. Stay away from the balcony as it gets closer to the stage. I would also suggest you leave the car at the hotel and take a taxi or the T to Symphony Hall (parking stinks). But if you go early, you can walk from there to NEC and look around, visit Rayburn's music, cruise up Mass Ave to Berklee School, and hang a left on Boylston to go by Boston Conservatory, where you can clearly see the lights of Fenway from the library windows.
