But not the valve slides ! The maintuning slide is conical as it is on
carefully built horns. This means, the crook between the two different shanks
(a thinner a wider) is conical, which seems necessary with shorter leadpipes,
but not conical valve slides . They would not make any sense, as they would
not be adjustable. How should they hold in place ? What is the purpose of valve
slides ? To adjust the additional tubes if the main tuning slide is pulled out
(usually) or in. The WAH WAH WAH WAH comes from the player, as a plain tube
cannot Wah-wah, as the plain tube is DEAD material.

Greetings -

Yes, we do have lots of original works. I wonder
how the numbers of such trios compare between
original works and suitable works written for
other instruments. Might it be something like 10
original works vs. 500 suitable works for other
instruments?

Speaking of music in general for instruments
other than the horn, I don't know about others,
but I don't know what I would have done if it
weren't for works for other instruments such as
Weissenborn book 2, Arban's, Bach Cello Suites,
Telemann Canonic Sonatas, and Concone vocal works.

Best regards,

Greetings.

I can add a very nice work for Horn and Flute. It's a composition by Marcel
Bouchard entitled Champetre. It is a selection of movements. Since I do not
read French, I can't begin to tell you the names of the Movements, but they are
very playable and pleasant to listen to...

I have a unique situation with one of my students. He has studied horn with me
for over three years, and his twin sister plays Flute. They are high school
seniors and wanted to find a work they could perform together at Michigan's
Solo and Ensemble Festival. The young woman's name is Peggy and her flute
private teacher found this work for them to play, so Vinson and I began work on
the horn part, and I've been coaching both of them during his lessons. The work
is 4 various movements (due to time constraints they chose the first movement
to play) . They have gone to the District level and received a first division
rating, and this Saturday will perform it at the State level.

If you are still interested, I will see them on Thursday and get the
publisher's information and the names of all of the movements and post it on
Friday.

First, ditto what Carlberg said. To restrict ourselves to music that
doesn't have the word 'horn' written on it is to pass up experiencing
most of the world's greatest music. Nothing against Duvernoy and Titl,
et al., but they are inadequate replacements for Vivaldi, Telemann,
Stamitz, ... The one Telemann trio sonata for flute and horn is light
fun, but it isn't a great musical statement. It is a trio sonata dumbed
down to accommodate the limitations of the horn of the time. In the
only deeply musical musical movement of the piece - he made the horn
tacet. Grab a flutist and play his C minor sonata and you can tell why
Telemann tips Titl.

The larger picture though involves widening our horizons, getting better
educated, breaking down the walls that separate horn players from
mainstream music. If your question carries a suggestion to reject OPM
- Other People's Music, then you must explain what you think we gain by
restricting ourselves. And if it is, then where do you draw the line?
No more Beethoven Trio (2 oboes English horn), no more Bach Cello
Suites, Kreutzer etudes, Kling duets, etc., etc., etc. sigh...

A detail - I listed only one transcription, the Quantz trio. All of
my other recommendations are the Real Thing.

This discussion is interesting.  I read that the euphonium has conical
valve slides.  When you pull a valve slide it can only be replaced to it's
original position (not tuning link). It can't be reversed like standard
valve slides because one end is larger than the other.  I don't know if
this is the case w/ all euphoniums or just some  Anyway, doesn't a
conical bore add WAH WAH WAH WAH to a brass instrument's playing
characteristics?

*
Even if your horn has a conical bore, just install an
Amado key or two, and ou won't have to worry about
wah wah any more.

Gotta go,

This is Suite Champetre, by Marcel Boucard (no h).

The movements are Frondaisons (leaves), Crepescule, Ramages (warblings),
and Ebats Folatres (playful something). I once was told, but since
forgot part of the translation.

It is a lovely suite for unaccompanied flute and horn. Ramages is not
so easy, as it partners the flute as a hyperactive twittering bird with
the horn as sort of a dignified elephant.

2008-03-10 Thread HORNTRASH

Steve stammered:

There were plenty of brass insturments built in the 20th century that had
features that really did make them play better, but they were more expensive
to produce that way.

Now, this is true and I made the inventings of one myself and I made the
writings of this hereabouts many suns and moons ago, my 52 valve horn, one
valve
for each note, at $1000 per valve, which I called the AhCORdian, and it made
all the revolutionings that industry, and even agriculture, could make the
handlings of, even more than the Conn-O-Sax or the subcontrabass Tuba or the
Heckelphone or even the triple horn (luxury or sports models, either one)
which is a mere toy by comparison since it is valve challenged coming in at
only 7 or 8 and requiring only the left hand for fingerings and my AhCORdian
requires both hands to finger it, much like a double Keytar, if there was such
a
thing, and the bore was asymmetrical as well as convulsive and retrograded
since each octave had is compensation for the others so that in effect, as the
acousticians might say, it was psychotacoustical since every note was in
tune with every other note and once you figured that out, you could play
stopped without your hand in the bell, even, just by half-valveing on the Gbb
side
and Konzertstueck, Siegfried's longs and shorts, Mendelssohns Rockabye'bye
Baby and even Till or Donkeyscheidt were a breeze, not to make the
mentionings of Kopprasch No. 1, and if you had even more Gelt, you could have
made the
orderings of the Double AhCORdian, with two leadpipes (one pretty big and
one kind of medium) and two bells (one double nickel plated silver and one
bare brass unlacquered for purity of tone and both were cryogenically pre-aged
for your sonic pleasure) which is played by two players and you all will
please make the rememberings of the Double Horn Husband and Wife Team of
Lipschitz and Klamakoff who were so well know, at least by some people, as
they were
true pioneers of music educationing taking music to the masses by their
missionary work all over the globe and then they got a church orchestra gig in
Zimbabwe playing first and second horns with equal aplomb so they could put on
their resumes that they had held missionary positions and the like and then
they came out with their text book for the horn, the Corma Sutra which is
still popular today and available in the back rooms of book stores and cigar
shops everywhere as well as on the internet and that book also explains why
the divorce rate is unusually high amongst horn players and how to prevent it.

I have a student who asked me about Pro Tec cases. Can you please let
me know if you have an opinion on them? He's looking for a cut-bell
 case.

For what it's worth, I have a Thompson Edition fixed bell case for
various of my horns, and their cut bell case for my 8DS. I'm thrilled
with both. (The OEM Conn case for the 8DS is a heavy monster. and a
real knee-banger.)

Neither was cheap, but then, nothing worthwhile ever seems to be cheap
anymore. They're indeed well made, though, and should last a good long
time.

They're pretty good cases. My case holds my Conn 8D very well. It's a bit
bulky, and I when I travel, I have to take out a few things for it to store in
the overhead compartments of a plane.

I saw a newer, sleeker model of their cutbell horn cases at TMEA here last
month. Talked with the dealer, and he told me they're in production, and should
be out in 3-4 months.

That's all I know for now.
