[Hornlist] A few Questions

2008-07-12 Thread steveandelaine
Sorry If you got this mesg before , I sent it on the Yahoo Groups , where no2
has been answered

Been out of the loop of horn accessories for many years so please bear with me
and my bad grammar

1)
I occasionally look up eBay etc and saw a Denis Wick Top Heavy 5N mouthpiece ,
Never heard of a Top heavy mouthpiece etc so started looking it up and also
found boosters, I started to watch the item and it was very popular and went
for a reasonable price for a second hand mouthpiece, I looked up the website
ans it said it was suitable for a beginner, I would class myself as a good
amateur but rising quickly to high amateur (no not smoking high). This is why i
didn't bid myself lol , So my Question is do boosters or heavy top mouthpieces
help in any way and are the worth investing in etc

2)
My wife used to play the Cornet in a brass band (where we met , she got me
drunk and took advantage of me I'm sure). She always picks up my instrument
(musical one) and plays away every so often and tell me she always wanted to
play it . I also saw in eBay the piccolo french horn , it plays in Bb and has
tenor horn/Cornet/Trumpet fingerings as I see it , Is this piccolo thing just a
gimmick , a cornet in disguise as a french horn or something worth investing in
, (if its a cornet in disguise as a french horn i might still invest in one to
keep us all happy) So I'm really just wondering is it a gimmick i suppose

3)
My teacher referred to me to a book I found my Horn by Jasper Ree's , (sorry
if i spelt ure name wrong and ure part of this group lol). I don't read many
biographies etc , well i only read fantasy books , But i really enjoyed it , So
if anyone knows of similar books or bios on Horn players Id like to hear about
them etc

4)
Sorry about the essay , Looking to buy a new Horn, i play a Yamaha 664 which
has served me well, My Teacher has told me that at the moment Conn's would be a
good buy as alot of American Pro's use them and they can be cheaper than alot
of the other Pro instruments, Being European (Irish) I have always grew up with
the knowledge that a Horn player must want an Alex , SO my heart was always set
on a Alex , Alex 103 detachable bell , gold brass , with all the frilly bits to
be exact , I have no intentions of being a pro but would love to have that
kind of instrument, The price is nearly double so am i Mad (well madder than
usual) to go for the alex over the Conn

(and no I wont but 2 Conns for the same price as an Alex , and give 1 to my
wife, Im not that Mad)

Thanks in advance
Steve

P.S.
I know my grammer is bad but there is no point tring to improve it now , to0
busy practasing

My guess, is that even if the ebay horn isn't a gimmick for an experienced
horn player, it's not the right way for your wife to start playing the horn.
You can get her a normal Bb single if you wish, but the best thing is a
standard F/Bb double horn.

[Hornlist] Denver Updates (Double Post)

2008-07-12 Thread Wendell Rider

Hi folks,

Well, the big expo at Denver is about to begin. Hope to see all of
you there.

I am now the official conductor of the Over 50 Horn Choir. Maybe we
can come up with another name? I am not going to be checking IDs for
this, so if you can pass, come by and play. I am responsible for
bringing music, so if any of you have suggestions, please feel free
to let me know. Of course if I don't have it, I will need some help
getting it. In any case, I am bringing stuff to read and potentially
perform so it is no BIG worry. I personally would like to play the
LHS arrangement of Roman Carnival Overture, which I have, and do some
kind of tribute to a couple of our fallen comrades. I also will bring
Titanic and some Mozart, Saint-Saens, Wagner, Beethoven, Elgar and
others, including an old band favorite, Amparito Roca! The music
thing is pretty wide open at this point so feel free to suggest. We
could use some up tempo fun stuff at this point.

The rehearsals are going to be from 11-12 noon each day starting on
Wednesday. I'm not sure yet how many have expressed interest in this
officially to Susan McCullough, but apparently it is enough to put us
on the schedule. Everyone is welcome, you don't have to register in
advance or anything. The more of you who do state your interest,
either here or to Susan, as soon as possible, will help facilitate
having enough music right away.

Following the rehearsals, we will be having events in the Real World
Cyber Cafe and Lounge, otherwise known as Room 229. Activities will
start on Tuesday. We will have a Menu Board of what id going on
outside the room at all times. Internet access with ethernet cable.
Bring your lunch and check it out.

If any of you want to come by and play something for me or talk about
embouchures or anything else, I will be giving free consultations all
day, every day. Its an ongoing master class. I also have access to
the room into the evenings for other activities.

We also feature the wit and wisdom of Bob Osmun, Finke Horns to try
and the redoubtable Lowell Shaw and his arrangements. A good place to
hang.

I am bringing my large inside diameter mouthpiece collection as well
as a full line of the Osmun London series for people to try. We will
also be talking about inside diameter issues.

I will also be doing an actual live internet horn lesson demo at some
point during the week. I need at least one guinea pig, or should I
say student to pull that off.

Anyway, please come by and say hello.

Sincerely,
Wendell Rider

[Hornlist] Worship Band

2008-07-12 Thread Ashley Grothe

I attend a smaller, more conservative church and the youth there are trying to
bring some new thing to the services to spice things up. We really want to have
a worship band that includes all of our music playing youth. I looked in a
couple places, but could not quite find what I was looking for in music. I was
wondering if anyone out there might have a solution...

We are looking for well known and modern Christian (anyone know Casting
Crowns?) rather than hymnesque pieces. And our instrumentation would be a set
player, piano, trombone, horn, trumpet, bass guitar, and accoustic guitar.

I know this is really specific, but that is probably why I am struggling to
find something. Google only goes so far... *sigh*

I would really appreciate any help!
Thanks!

Re: [Hornlist] A few Questions

2008-07-12 Thread Kit Wolf
Looking to buy a new Horn, i play a Yamaha 664
 which has served me well

Why do you want to change? Is it getting old and worn, or are you looking
for something better? I have a Yamaha 664, and the only two horns I have
played and preferred were the alex 103 and the Yamaha 668. I particularly
liked the thumb-valve on the alex. Somehow I felt that it was designed to
be used as a chromatic valve, rather than than as a 'mode' change valve -
if this makes sense. The 668 is slightly easier to play at the top end
than the 664. I eventually got a new mouthpiece which has fixed that
problem.

A lot of this is probably down to personal preference and the fact that I
tend not to like the Geyer wrap. I have been told (and believe) that if I
played one for any length of time I'd get used to the intonation.

I had a very fun afternoon in Paxmans (London) who have a display rack
full of 20-30 french horns. If they were unhappy for me to play my way
through the entire shop's stock, they didn't show it. I tried several
Conns, but didn't find any that I preferred. I quite liked some of the
triples, but not their price tags.

Bearing in mind that I'm an amateur, I see no need to change instruments.

Kit
