I posted last year about my frustration & feeling overwhelmed w/ trying to manage everything I want to squeeze into my practice schedule. I've come up w/ a helpful little solution which is a combination of the recommendations of Wendell Rider & Matthew Scheffleman (sorry about the spelling, Matthew). I've made a killer lick page. Whenever I stumble upon a particularly tough lick in a piece I'm working on, I write out the few measures that really need wood shedding on staff paper, cut it out & tape it to my killer lick sheet. I slip this sheet in the warm up section of Wendell's book. So every day after I'm totally warmed up & loose, I take a few minutes to run through all the licks. That way, if I don't have time later in the day to work on ALL the pieces I'm studying, at least I've hit the hardest spots. When I get to rehearsal, I'm better prepared than I would be otherwise. It's a real time saver for me. If any of you have additional suggestions or refinements to add, I'm all ears. Thanks. The more I get into this discussion the differences that I acknowledge are indeed greater than I at first thought. Airstream direction is certainly a major difference, and after looking at a catalog photo of the 667V I realize that the F branch is wound more differently than on a "regular" Geyer style. As far as the difference between custom and professional, I would have to go with Dave W. and believe that the custom series was perhaps more hand built/assembled rather than machine mass produced. RE: [Hornlist] Yamaha 667V
Geyer style horns all have similar characteristics. The differences you acknowledge are larger differences than one ususally sees from one Geyer wrap to the next. Thus, the 667v is not similar enough to the 667 to warrant giving it the same number. That is my point. I think it was a mistake on Yamaha's part. The could have called it 865, 861v, 867v or 871. The use of the dual plane valve is one, and the unique wrap of the 1st Bb slide [it enters underneath the 1st F valve slide] are quite substantial I agree. [Hornlist] Yamaha 667V
I am personally a BIG fan of the Yamaha custom horns (861 and 667v, don't personally know the 867). Some folks say the 667v in particular is too light, to which I say, "Wow, this horn is nice and light!" The 667v tends to be quite bright, so I use a C10 instead of a C12. This gives it all the velvet and "ooohness" that I need. It has as secure a high Bb as any horn--ever, You cannot miss it! Mozart 2 or 4, Strauss 1+2, Ein Heldenleben--no fear. The high A with no valves is pretty close though I still like it with 1+2. The 861 is darker is color, no doubt, and is made with metal that is very soft, so it can dent easily. Yamaha dissected some old geyers to make this horn, so it is really a copy, although its wrap is not round but sort of egg shaped (I am told in Japan it was nicknamed "the egg"). You can play all over the horn with the thumb valve in, especially with the 861, but also with the 667v, without going "trombonish" as you do on the 8d (large-belled Kruspe) styled instruments. All horns tend to become recalcitrant somewhere just below the staff (with regard to volume); the Yamaha customs less than most horns. It easily stay "open" across that break. And it roars down low! There was a long time when the used 861s and 667vs were going for 75-80% of the new price. Lately people are asking 90-95% of new but will usually come down. I cannot speak to the 867 which was produced after the 861 and before the 667v. It is modeled after the Knopf. Fewer of them were made than the other two. There may have been some trouble with the layout of the thumb mechanism. The one for sale on Hornplayer.net seems to have been adapted and changed for that reason. It has been on and off the list for three months at 5200. 4600-4800 is a better price. I just bought a 667v from Ken Pope for $4600. I love it! That seems like the right price, given that you can get a new one for 5800 or so. Nonetheless right now everyone is asking 5200-5500 for used. Dicker 'em down to the mid-high 40's and everyone should be happy. The 667v is a magnificent instrument. Buy one used. If you don't like it it will sell at what you paid. But it will be a huge change from your 8d. You'll need to do lots of things differently. my 2 cents tom hunt in iowa -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] on behalf of Brad Gregory Sent: Sat 12/15/2007 2:17 PM To: horn@music.memphis.edu Subject: [Hornlist] Yamaha 667V? T one time, I owned a copy of the solo part of the Ralph Hermann "Concerto for Horn," which is for Horn and Band or Horn and Orchestra, or, I think, also Horn and Piano. I have not seen it since I moved to Tennessee and probably long before then. Does anyone have a copy of this solo if it is out of print? If it is available for sale, please let me know where I can purchase it. I have done an exhaustive search of every dealer and publisher that I can think of. Every search engine that I know of has been tried. I found the band portion owned by a community band somewhere, but cannot relocate the web-site to contact the librarian for the name of the publisher. It is on the U.S. Marine Band's Concerto Competition list this year, but the site gives no way to find the piece. Any assistance would be much appreciated. If you know where to find it, I would think that others on the list might be interested. Thank you for any assistance. It is quite an accessible and easy work, as I recall. Since Hermann's heirs and assigns should still be getting royalties, I would think that he would want us to be able to purchase his concerto. If I think about pieces in E, real solo pieces, Weber´s concertino comes to mind, where even first valve (on the F-horn) is rarely used. Just valve 2 is busy all the time. But the topic was: how the sound (timbre) changes when using the F- or E-crook. This applies to the hand horn only. There is a very light shift only. If compared with the valve horn, there is quite no shift in timbre as one is using the E-horn mostly anyway, when playing the E part on the F-side (2nd valve is E-horn). ___ post: horn@music.memphis.edu unsubscribe or set options at http://music2.memphis.edu/mailman/options/horn/hans%40pizka. de ___ post: horn@music.memphis.edu unsubscribe or set options at http://music2.memphis.edu/mailman/options/horn/huntt%40waldorf.edu ___ post: horn@music.memphis.edu unsubscribe or set options at http://music2.memphis.edu/mailman/options/horn/archive%40jab.org

It is embarrasing to say, but I have a dozen different publications of each concerto, but I use a copy of the urtext edition when I performed them with orchestra and edit the part to my own tastes. I have one edited version for valve horn and another edited version for hand horn. I use copies because the orchestral parts from various publishers are not alike, and some are of different length. So I had to adjust the solo part accordingly. When playing with piano accompaniment, I prefer the Jones - Schirmer edition because I think the piano reduction is better. The Dalley Horn Catalogue lists 54 different publications of the concertos. That is too many to discuss their merits here. Ragards. From the publisher's web site: The hymn tune "Neander," also known as "Unser Herrscher," was composed by Joachim Neander in the 17th century. Well known in the present day as the melody of "Open Now Thy Gates of Beauty" and "Rise, Ye Children of Salvation," this tune has been published with at least seven other hymn texts. Dr. Hilfiger has used "Neander" as the starting point for the Partita, which is a set of elaborate variations on the familiar tune. The hymn melody makes this work a natural choice for use in worship, perhaps as prelude or during the offering, but the composition is interesting enough to be suitable for recitals as well. The composer prefers organ accompaniment, but Partita also works quite well with piano accompaniment. Performance time for the full work is about 4:20, but the variations could be played separately, if desired. Hey Paul, where are you? are you still in Mexico?? love to hear from you! tom hunt, now in iowa -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] on behalf of [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Mon 3/28/2005 10:06 AM To: horn@music.memphis.edu Cc: Subject:[Hornlist] 8D on EBAY Hello All- In support of what Ken Pope has written, the sellers of this instrument have been informed that the bell is not an Elkhart bell and that they are advertising the horn as an Elkhart horn. Their answer is "thank you for the information." This borders very closely as fraudulent advertising. If you completely restore an Elkhart 8d and replace the original bell with an Eastlake bell, you then no longer have an Elkhart 8d. RE: [Hornlist] fixed bell and airlines
when you get to the security check, doesnt everything have to fit through the scanner? I would think that would be the place you get hassled. You are saying that is not the case? thanks for your response tom hunt -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] on behalf of Shane McLaughlin Sent: Sun 3/13/2005 10:22 PM To: The Horn List Cc: Subject:Re: [Hornlist] fixed bell and airlines If possible, book a window seat. Put the flat part under the seat in front of you, hide the bell with your feet. Even better if you have a coat to put over it. If you're flying southwest, check in early so you can get a window seat. Most flight attendants just don't want to bother with making you get back off the plane to check it, etc, even if it isn't 100% FAA OK. The window seat makes it where no one would have to climb over your horn in an emergency. Don't get the emergency exit row. This will upset them. Some planes have closets that you put coats in; the bottom is usually empty and perfect for horns. Most importantly, act like carrying the thing onto the plane is natural and common. Smile, etc. I have a fixed bell horn in a Johnson case. I could check it without being really scared. If you worry about whatever your horn is in, look into Walt Johnson's cases. I once flew on an airline that did make me gate check it, and it was fine. I don't fly on them anymore, and no one else has ever given any trouble about the horn. Good luck. [Hornlist] fixed bell and airlines
hey listers! Those of you who have fixed bell horns, what do you do when you fly? Do you check it and hope for the best. Do you take your chances getting it on the plane, knowing it might not work? I am in the market for a horn, and I'd like to look at horns with fixed bells, but I also need to fly with the horn. What's your guys advice? tom hunt * NOTE: An attachment named winmail.dat was deleted from this message because it contained a windows executableor other potentially dangerous file type.Contact the system administrator for more information.--_=_NextPart_001_01C5284B.A1F91046-- ___ post: horn@music.memphis.edu unsubscribe or set options at http://music.memphis.edu/mailman/options/horn/archive%40jab.org
