[Hornlist] Re: Horn Digest, Vol 78, Issue 31
Not having ever played in a real orchestra, I do remember a band arrangement of Greensleeves that required me to play a 4th line D all by myself at the beginning for two measures. I only fracked it once in 6 performances.(g) Also it was just mentioned here is the beginning of the new Star Trek movie, but there are technically two beats of drums and basses (I think). -- message: 1 date: Mon, 29 Jun 2009 10:04:09 -0700 from: Robert N. [Hornlist] Bell Flares
There has been lots of discussion on the list lately about the efficacy of a new leadpipe, which leads to my next question. How much different will a particular horn play with a different bell flare. I have a 1 year old Atkinson with a rose brass bell and I've noticed I can't play as loudly as I could on my old 8D before the tone takes on that characteristic raspy edge. Any thoughts? Would a nickle silver bell flare in the 300,000 series size change the playing characteristics very much? Jim McDermott Deep into the Christmas concert season - 5 down, 5 more to go. [Hornlist] Re: Horn Digest, Vol 50, Issue 3
Dave, I just recently parted with my Texas 8D, which I thought was a great horn, and am now playing my new Atkinson 501. It took me about one whole rehearsal and a change of mp to get used to my new horn. It too has a rose brass bell and is much more responsive than the old 8D. I had to change from the gold 7BW to a Gardinelli C4 and it has been love ever since. I've never played on such a great horn in 40 years of horn playing. I hope you like your Schmid as much. (I bought a medium yellow brass and a large(still significantly smaller than the 8D) rose-brass bell flare, both hand-hammered with garland. What a beauty! [Hornlist] Leadpipes
So now you have a very good idea of what you are paying for in a custom leadpipe. And what is worth in order to play better? Kendall Betts Apprentice Horn Maker I'm just curious, from all of the vast experience on this list, what improved playing characteristics could I expect from installing a custom leadpipe on my early Texas 8D? It plays well now, so what would change? I asked a couple of weeks ago for suggestions on a new horn, and many suggested that I just change the leadpipe. Give me some good reasons. [Hornlist] New Horn Recommendations
Fellow listers, I am in the market for a new horn after playing a great 8D I bought from Alex Ozolins several years ago. I know that each horn is a little different, but what recommendations can you all make. I play in a 55 piece community band, and in pit orchestras for community theater or chorale groups. I've thought about some possibilities: Hans Hoyer 6802, Holton 188, or 189. Any other ideas? [Hornlist] More on 8D's
I've played on a number of horns through the years: Conn F single, Holton F single, 2 different 6D's (one while in college which served me very well) and two diffferent 8D's one from 1969 the other from 1973. Believe it or not my current 8D made in Abilene (or wherever) is a great horn. Not all Texas 8D's are junk. The only horn that made me want to change was a Holton 189, which I tried out and loved, but then ordered a new one which didn't play anything like the tryout model. I sent it back. I just wish I could find that one special 189.. [Hornlist] Fingerings, accidentals making music
Hans, I must repectfully disgree. I often play in the pit orchestra for various community theater musicals. Obviously the music is rented. But as an amateur, if marking a note or a fingering helps me play the passage properly, I'll continue to do so. My rule is, 1 mistake is OK, but if I miss a note twice, I mark it. And no, I did not learn my transpositions, because all band music in America is transposed to F by the publishers. [Hornlist] Great piece
I know that many of you are orchestral players, but for any of you playing in wind ensembles or community bands, we are playing an incredible new piece by David Shaffer called Legend of the Sword loosely based on the Excaliber story. Great horn parts through out the piece. I would highly recommend it. (Our 2nd of 6 Christmas season concerst is tonight.) [Hornlist] Bells Up Definition
Is it possible to get a definitive answer as to how to hold the horn when the music calls for bells up? I ashamed to say that in all of high school and college and even my daughter's horn performance degree, no one has given us the proper way to play bells up. Do you keep your hand in the horn and raise the bell horizontally or do you hold the bottom of the bel amd lift it above horizontal? [Hornlist] Re: Horn Digest, Vol 22, Issue 31
Steve, both the 6D and the 567 are great high school level horns and could be played beyond that. I started on a Conn single F horn but was moved up to a 6D as a sophomore and junior. As a senior I got an 8D but sfter high school graduation I had to take a college horn, which put me back on a 6D. Good horn, though, and I progressed well on it. I even bought my daughter a used 6D when she was in high school. I now play an 8D and in our horn section we have two 8D's, a Holton 187, and a 6D. The holton is the one which has trouble blending in. The only time I ever played a 567 was after I had not played for 10 years, and I would have sounded bad on just about any horn then. :-) Jim McDermott Lake Area Community Orchestra message: 9 date: Wed, 27 Oct 2004 21:46:47 -0400 from: Steve Freides [EMAIL PROTECTED] Any education is most welcomed. At the very least, I can see why a beginner would prefer the 6D to the 567 - it is, overall, more forgiving. Thanks to those who helped me identify my 8D as an Abilene horn, and while it may be, it plays as well as any 8D I've ever played on (which is 4). [Hornlist] 8D Alternatives
Dear fellow hornists, A discussion about a yellow brass 8D has arisen a few days ago. Someone replied that there are new 8Ds made in Eastlake OH that are less than desirable. I am receiving a new 8D as a graduation present in May, and I want it to be a decent one!! Should I search for an older Elkhart 8D (which I had thought originally that the new ones were made there). Are the new 8Ds any good? Also, someone posted the idea of washing your horn in the dishwasher. Can this be done, is it a good idea, and what would happen if I tried this (what are the advantages and disadvantages)? I look forward to your responses, Brittany Davies, Fort Myers, FL Brittany, If you have your heart set on an 8D, by all means go and play several of them. They vary greatly. I am blessed with a fairly good Texas horn. But my daughter's Holton Merkermatic is also a great horn. Plus, you might look at the Yamaha and Holton copies of the 8D. I have also read with interest the thread on Community band parts sharing. We only have three horns in our section, but we all respect each others playing and easily pass the 1st, 2nd or 3rd parts around. At an age of 49 and male, I am argueably bolder in my playing as against the other two ladies, who are both over 65. But their skills are still quite good and really all that means is the conductor hears my screw-ups a lot more. We just keep the parts we will be playing in our own folders and we let the conductor know which of us is playing any particular solo.
