[Hornlist] Brass Trio Arrangement

2009-08-20 Thread retiredprof55
I would like to invite you to examine my most recent arrangement for
brass trio, “Overture to the Barber of Seville” by Rossini. The
duration is 7' and the difficulty level is college or professional.
You can sample this work and my other compositions and arrangements by
visiting http://cooppress.hostrack.net and clicking on “brass ensemble
music”.

Thank you for considering my music.

[Hornlist] Brass Trio

2005-05-22 Thread OstlerHorn
I have a brass trio that performs in our church. I googled "brass trios" and
found all sorts of websites. Among them was Indiana State Solo and Ensemble
Brass Trios ( a large list with composer, title, and publisher). Sheet Music
Service in Portland will provide prices and difficulty levels in some cases.

Poulenc has a great Sonata for brass trio - we're actually playing the Andante
from that at our community band's (ahcb.org) Small Ensemble concert, plus a
couple of horn quartets. If you're in the St. Louis area, I recommend showing
up this Tuesday. Details are on the web site, it's free, and there's free food!

No flame here - I prefer using horn, flute or oboe, and bassoon.

And IMHO it sounds much better with clarinet, horn and bassoon, than it

Several years ago, I commissioned a work from my father Bruce Thompson,
professor of composition at Winthrop University, for our trio to perform
alongside the Poulenc. The resulting work, Three Anachronisms, has
become somewhat standard repertoire for that combination. Like most of
his works, it is written in a reasonably conservative style, perhaps
somewhere between Britten and Tippett, with the last movement maybe
somewhere closer to John Adams.

You can find a bit more information at:

http://www.thompsonedition.com/brasstri.htm

This topic has actually come up on the Elmhurst/Memphis hornlist before.
See for example:

http://www.hornplayer.net/archive/a92.html

>p.s. we are playing the poulenc for my recital.

Do be careful how you position that work on a recital. I had occasion
to perform it again only last week, and was once again reminded that,
due to striking lack of rest, it is, for such a short work, surprisingly
taxing for the horn, and perhaps even more so for the trumpet. The work
is well worth performing, but you might not want to use it to close a
long program.

I have written a Trio for this combination. Also
a concerto for brass trio and orchestra. If you can
find 80 extra players, you'll really impress the judges
when you audition playing the latter piece.

The trio concerto was reviewed in Horn Call a couple
