[Hornlist] Stiff lips

2007-01-12 Thread hans_illich
Hi all!
Almost everything was said in this matter. But let me tell what happened
to me a few years ago. I had a problem similar as described by
Ron. The lips were just stiff, didn't vibrate at all. They were like
paralized. I coud not buzz without the mouthpiece. Before a concert I had
to do a lot of warmup and after a little break it was stiff again.
Until I found the reason. I have had a blister on my lip some time before,
which happens very rarely to me. So I tried a natural medicine. I put
Propolis, some kind of stuff which bees produce to keep their homes
clean. You get it in shops where they sell honey, beewax, etc. Maybe it
was just the alcohol in this propolis or propolis itself, I don't know. I
found out about it because I tried to put it on my lips later on, and
bang, the stiff lip problem was there again. This is a good medicine when
used in small doses with lot of water, but never put it on the lips as it
is.
So just think about what you have done before you got the stiff lips. It
must not necessarily be overdoing the lips. It can be a chemical reason.
Best wishes to you and hope you find out what it was.

Liebe Gruesse/Best regards, Hans Illich

I had a similar problem with the new Blistex Lip Infusion. I suspect
the chemicals they use were originally used to give old, floppy leather
lots of body. Since it is absorbed into the lips, it takes a long time
before playing sensitivity returns.

Re: [Hornlist] Stiff Lips

2007-01-11 Thread Carlisle Landel

Ron,

The first thing to ask (as was implied by Hans) is What is the cause
of the stiffness?

Stiffness after exercise is due to damage to the tissue. So you
first have to ask yourself if you are damaging the tissue through bad
technique, that is, excessive pressure which will cause direct damage
in extreme cases or secondary damage due to disruption of the blood
supply.

If this isn't the problem, then it can also be due to micro damage
from overuse. Treat your practice sessions like you any other
physical workout routine, that is, don't overdo it, but *slowly* work
up to the proper level of endurance. Vary the routine some, just
like in the gym: analogous to doing weights one day and aerobics the
next, you can work on range on one day and speed and accuracy the next.

Once the damage is done, you can try rest and ice and anti-
inflamatory drugs (ibuprofen, e.g.) for short term relief.

But in the long run, it is *much* better to treat the cause, not the
symptoms.

RE: [Hornlist] Stiff Lips

2007-01-10 Thread hans
All these creams work the same as our medics: they therapy
just the symptoms leaving out the source for the defect.

One should avoid excessive pressure while playing - or
better said: just use necessary pressure, which is that
kind of pressure ON THE LIPS, to seal mouthpiece with the
lips so air cannot escape to the side. Avoid pressure INTO
THE LIPS. Pressure does not produce high notes.

And, if playing very high makes you stiff lips, why playing
practising in that high region ? If you like this very
high from written a above staff up to high g above staff
(4 ledger lines), why not playing cornet or trumpet, so to
not get stiff lips ? Very simple solution.

Doing things the false way, but smearing around with
creames, that´s a NO SOLUTION.

It will save you all the many hours needed usually for
building up the embouchure strength - a magic cream as most
heavily advertised creams - just for those who believe that
buying is better than practising.
Using this cream will allow you to eat drink anything you
want before after the concert

Greetings -

I'd look in the area of warmups before each playing session.

I don't know about others, but a good warmup in
the morning sets me up for the day, then after a
break a few scales and arpeggios is all I need to
be going again.
