Second that. During my search for the ideal mouthpiece for me (remember,
it's quite an individual thing), I settled on the Pizka mouthpiece for quite
a while. Long enough to buy four or five of them, and give a couple to
friends. However, I finally figured out that what I really needed is a
wider diameter, to fit my teeth and facial bones better. Currently, the
Laskey 85G is the best compromise I've found, because it fits me well and
works well with most of my horns.

But if there'd been an 18.25 or 18.5mm version of the Pizka mouthpiece, I
would have looked no farther. I'd have had no reason to. Bore size, cup
shape, and rim shape and thickness all seemed just about perfect to me. It
was the first really thin rim I ever used, and that greatly helped my
articulation.

Hans, is there any chance that you'll be enlarging your line of mouthpieces
(pun intended), now that you'll have more time on your hands?

Yes, I found this information on mouthpieceexpress.com - same info. It
seems the 32C4 is the next Yamaha to try - same basic shape but a larger
bore.

This is what I play, but it seems to me the opposite in many ways of what my

Re: [Hornlist] Yamaha mouthpieces

2007-03-22 Thread billbamberg
Normal fractional drill bits often are sized every 1/32". Bore sizes
correspond to numbered drill bits, and the difference between numbers
is usually only a couple of thousandths. A number 3 bore is 0.213", and
number 12 bore is 0.196". There are ten number drills covering a range
that, at best, includes only two fractional drills.

If you go to Harborfreight.com, you can buy a complete set of numbered
drill bits, on sale, for $12.99. The bits are M-2 steel and are TiN
coated. Only change the bore one number size at a time. At the very
least, use a drill press. If possible, set it up so the mouthpiece
spins, and the drill bit is clamped and stationary. Remember, you can
easily drill it bigger, but you can't drill it smaller.

I've had a couple horn professors tell me to drill a mouthpiece to a
larger
bore myself. I even did it to a $100 mouthpiece on a suggestion by a
well
respected horn professor ( you all know him ). Just fit the drill bits
through
the bore until you find the one with the tightest fit. Then go one
bigger and
drill away. Don't worry about centering too much it kind of self
centers as
long as you make an effort to drill straight. Since the yamaha
mouthpiece is

cheap and easy to come buy, it might be worth a shot.

Yes, this is interesting, but I'm afraid it's not enough for someone like
me. :( For instance, when I was playing production Giardinelli mouthpieces,
I knew that I liked the C series, and experimented with the different sizes,
which meant different bores, but basically the mouthpieces were all the same
except for the size of the bore.

I'd like to know what the difference is between, e.g., the three that are
all "30", and then the 29's and the 31's, etc. Basically what I'm trying to
do is sneak in a small change here. My son was 10 when he started playing
the 30C4, he's now 14 and bigger than I am, plenty strong, has high notes to
burn, so a slightly larger bore mouthpiece might work out very well for him
but I don't want to change anything other than that one parameter if I can.
In other words, I need to know if the "30" or the "C" or the "4" means
something in regard to the bore size and if they make another mouthpiece
that might fit the bill here.

Sorry to be so dense about this.
