[HOT] USAD DIV Brainstorming Sessions

2014-03-23 Thread Kate Chapman
Hi All,

I posted a few weeks ago about the USAID Development Innovation
Ventures here. If we want to submit a letter of interest it is due
April 15th. I though a good way to get started on determining if we do
want to submit is to have some brainstorming sessions. To try to be as
timezone friendly as possible I've picked two times.

Thursday, 27 March 2014, 00:00:00 UTC(1)
Thursday, 27 March 2014, 13:00:00 UTC(2)

I've put together a Hackpad to begin the discussion(3). If you have
ideas either join the discussion on Mumble(4), post here or edit the
Hackpad. I hope we can wrap up the brainstorming by March 30th giving
two weeks to write the Letter of Interest.

DIV is looking for innovative and cost effective methods for
development. I think this is an opportunity for us to think about new
techniques we haven't previously done or places were there is desire
for HOT, but no other potential ways to do it on the horizon.

People are welcome to hold their own brainstorm sessions outside of
the times I've agreed to facilitate as well, let's just wrap up the
brainstorming phase by March 30th, because then we'll need to be in
the LOI phase.

Thanks,

-Kate

[HOT] Few Tasking Manager updates

2014-03-23 Thread Dražen Odobašić
Hi all,

I've deployed a few fixes to the main server, so if you have any problems, first
try to clear your browser cache, and reload the service.

In short:

* Revise lock / unlock procedure to avoid contribution edit conflicts for a task
https://github.com/hotosm/osm-tasking-manager/issues/186
* Improve show user tiles on map performance
https://github.com/hotosm/osm-tasking-manager/issues/189
* Highlighting finished tiles based on timestamp from the stats tab.
https://github.com/hotosm/osm-tasking-manager/issues/199
* Invalidate / Comments info lost if later split the job

 Hi Mathias and all,

You are absolutely right! And indeed we are making gps traces, and we will
try to upload some of them tonight!

Also another thing, we are looking for somebody who already participated
 in
the Tasking Manager or other support to us, who wants to be interviewed

So if you are the one we are looking for, please contact me as soon as

looks like the mapping is making progress.Very well.
I mapped a few tasks my self, based on the Bing images.

 Here is a related request:
In Lubumbashi there are still very few GPS traces.
It would be great if you could record some GPS tracks while you are in
 the
area and load them onto the OSM server.

Most mapping is based on satelite images. That has a lot of detail.
But the experience has shown, that it is important to check that the
satelite images have a correct alignment without any offset.

 Looking forward to your traces.

 Keep up the good work.

[HOT] Tharparkar Drought in Sindh Province, Pakistan

2014-03-23 Thread Severin Menard
Hi,

Since the beginning of March 2014, severe shortages of food and water have
been reported in Tharparkar
Districthttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tharparkar_District in
Pakistan's south-east Sindh province. A number of children have reportedly
died of malnutrition. The area has not received any significant rainfall
since the end of 2013. Tharparkar has been declared calamity-hit by the
Government of Sindh and PKR 18.6 million have been released for immediate
relief. See these reports from ECHO http://ec.europa.eu/echo/index_en.htm
:
http://reliefweb.int/map/pakistan/10-march-2014-pakistan-displacement-drought
and
from the Government of Pakistan:
http://reliefweb.int/report/pakistan/tharparkar-drought-sindh-situation-report-11-covering-period-21-march-2014-1400-hrs

I created this
uMaphttp://umap.openstreetmap.fr/en/map/sindh-province-pakistan-drought-2014_5729to
help identify the district and see what is the stated of the OSM data.
Thanks to Pierre, the main roads are already mapped. I checked the imagery
and the whole district is covered by quite good Bing imagery, so we can
provide the baseline data for the relief.

Basically, it would be hard for me or Pierre to lead, would be great if
someone would be interested to lead a monitoring over this area. Basically,
it encompasses creating an OSM wikipage, featured TM jobs (one by one, with
each one covering only a town, not a huge area, eg look at the jobs for the
Central African Republic), HOT exports jobs http://export.hotosm.org/,
updating the uMap (see this
examplehttp://umap.openstreetmap.fr/en/map/central-african-republic_3868),
providing feedback to the HOT mailing list and if possible write a blog
post when achieved.

If you are already experienced, great. If you feel you do not master
everything listed above but would really like to learn, no problem, IMHO
there are enough experienced people that can help you to start through
email, IRC or Mumble https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Mumble. If there

[HOT] Help digitize walking papers info

2014-03-23 Thread Andrew Buck
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

Hello everyone,

Over the last several days a huge effort has been put forth by the
remote mappers to map portions of the city of Lubumbashi. The mapping
there was in support of a ground survey organized by Doctors Without
Borders (MSF) and using local volunteers to help do the actual surveying.

Over the past several days about 15 people have been out surveying the
areas we have been tracing. They have scanned in some of their
fieldpapers results and sent them back to us to be entered into OSM as
survey data. There are approximately 200 pages in total with about 5
to 10 street and POI names on each page. Due to various factors the
scans are not suitable to be uploaded to the fieldpapers website in
the normal fashion but the data is still useable non the less.

I will put up a table listing each if the atlases that were filled
out. What we need people to do is to mark an atlas as being worked on
by them, go through each scanned page and copy the information (street
names and POI data) into OSM as best you can. If you are unable to
input any of the recorded data please leave a note about what page and
what data has not been entered so that the local mappers can go back
over and fill in the missing bits from the original papers. The table
listing the PDF's to be processed will be at the address below (it
will take me some time to put it together so just monitor the page
over next hours and jump in anytime you want).

https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Lubumbashi

Thank you for all your help so far and for your continued help with
these scans. This is a really unique opportunity for our organization
to get good ground level survey data so let us make the most of it and
try to learn what we can about how to improve this process in the future.

Just a quick followup to my last message so you have a bit more
context on what is being done here. The twitter timelines below show
a bunch of pictures of the surveying team over the last several days.
The survey is being led by Jorieke from OSM and Ivan from MSF.

https://twitter.com/Zjwarie

https://twitter.com/ivangayton

If you are a twitter user you should follow them as there will likely
be many more interesting photos over the days and weeks to come. The
most intense portion of the survey and mapping in this area is
beginning to wind down, however the local mappers who did the survey
plan to continue surveying and mapping in the future with the current
plan being to have a mapping party every couple of weeks.

Everyone involved in the project has been really excited about the
work that the OSM community has done so far in helping to support this
survey project. Thank you again to all those who have contributed so
far, and to those who will contribute in the days to come.

 Mark,

If you install mumble you can speak with Pierre and I and we can get
you started managing the mapping project. The instructions to install
and set up mumble are on the wiki below.

  Hi Severin

I would be willing to lead/participate a monitoring if
You/Pierre/Others would be willing to mentor me. I am not sure what

initially as I have only used TM but I would like to learn the HOT
  tools and get more involved.

I live in GMT+8 (Philippines) and have IRC (recently installed) so
if you would like to point me where to go on IRC to get started and
ask questions, I will get on with the job.
