Re: [HOT] GAP Analysis or Regional OSM Mapping Assessment

2015-06-22 Thread Russell Deffner
Ok, sorry about that Samuel; I think there was probably some difficulty
understanding the question, and it is difficult to answer.

If I understood correctly, you are looking to analyze the ‘completeness’ of
features like the road network. This can be done with Geographic Information
System applications, but I don’t do that type of work much anymore, so I won’t
pretend I can give you good instructions. However, there may be a larger issue
– in order to do that analysis you would need a complete dataset to compare the
OSM dataset against. Maybe there is Nigeria government data, but in general if
you had a figure, such as “there are X million kilometers of road in Kano State
– then you could compute the amount in OSM and have such figure. Even more
difficult, but not impossible – there is something similar for comparing united
states tiger data to OSM – is to actually be able to show on a map where there
is ‘gaps’.

Hope that helps and/or gives a better idea for what you are looking for and
maybe who can help you achieve that.

Hello House,

I would like to know if there is a way, tool, method or any service that one
can you to assess the amount of mapping that has been done for a region so as
to plan further mapping. For example, i want to plan how to complete road
mapping on OSM for Kano State, Nigeria, is there any tool or service or method
i can use to assess the amount of work has been done already for Kano? Simply
put may be any service that can give statistic of percentage completion or
summary of work done for road or other features to be mapped.

I understand there is a similar service on Task Manager but i need such from

Dear Open Data Awards nominees,

I’m writing to share with you some good news – you have been shortlisted
for an Open Data Award http://awards.theodi.org/.

We have had a fantastic response this year with 500 nominations for
innovative and inspirational uses of open data across the world, from
Uruguay to Brazil, Italy to Ukraine.

Because the standard of nominations for each of our five categories was so
high, shortlisting was a real challenge, so well done for getting to this
stage.

What happens next?

   -

In the next step of our review process, our judges will assess the
shortlists, rank their top three and send them back to us by Monday 22
   June.

   -

We will get in touch with the 3 finalists for each award category to let
them know they have been selected from 22 June.

   -

We will then ask that all finalists ensure that they, or a
representative, are able to attend the awards ceremony on 9 July at the
   Bloomberg offices in London.

This is crucial, as winners will be announced on the night and someone will
need to claim your award. Our founders, Sirs Tim Berners-Lee and Nigel
Shadbolt will announce the winners in person on the night.

Thank you for being a part of the Open Data Awards 2015, and good luck!

Re: [HOT] GAP Analysis or Regional OSM Mapping Assessment

2015-06-22 Thread Rafael Avila Coya
Hi, Samuel:

I've actually seen this email a couple of days ago, but didn't have time
to answer. I am also sorry for the delay.

As Russell says, unless we have another database to compare against, I
can't see a reliable way to get an estimate of the completion percentage
of roads already mapped and those still missing (but that doesn't mean
there aren't!). The only database I know of is the GRoads one [1], but I
think Kano state has already more roads mapped that GRoads, and probably
any other map. But this idea could be applied to the poorly mapped
Central and South Nigeria.

Séverin Menard has opened at least two projects in the TM to complete
the road network taking GRoads as a reference, one for Mali [2] and
another for Central African Republic [3]. The goal is not only to
complete the road network, but also to timestamp all segments using
Bing/Mapbox imagery. I think this idea could be used in Nigeria too, at
least for those still-poorly-mapped states.

Kano state road network was mapped through a TM job [4] about a year
ago. In my honest opinion, I wouldn't use that same job for validation,
but I would rather create a new one to validate, with less and bigger
task tiles. As I have been mapping hard that area, I give you my
opinion: the number of roads and tracks for Kano state is quite high
already, but you can find some settlements here and there that aren't
connected. Also, some tagging should be corrected (add surface to some
highways, and correct the category of others).

The main purpose of a road network is to connect all settlements in an
area. For that reason, I think the new jobs of importing health
facilities and settlements for Borno State [5]]6] is giving better
results. The reason is that in those two projects, contributors are
asked to map the road access to all those health facilities and
settlements, making the task more comprehensive and consistent, as they
will have to make sure they don't leave any settlement nor health
facility behind. I have still to do some more validation in those two
projects, but my understanding is that they are giving better overall
results. I had already this idea when the Kano project was going on, but
there were too many things to do at the same time, unfortunately.

Cheers,

Rafael.

[HOT] Quick study: initial activity and retention of first-time HOT contributors

2015-06-22 Thread Martin Dittus
Hallo all,

I’d like to share a link to an OSM diary entry where I summarise part of a HOT
study I did earlier this year.

I was interested in understanding how first-time contributors engage with HOT:
how many hours of work do they contribute in the first days, and how long do
they keep contributing to HOT once they joined? I’m comparing three
initiatives: mapping for typhoon Haiyan/Yolanda in Nov 2013, the Ebola response
throughout 2014, and initial months of Missing Maps after November 2014.

The post with detailed results is here:
https://www.openstreetmap.org/user/dekstop/diary/35271

And here’s some background on my work:
https://www.openstreetmap.org/user/dekstop/diary/35169

Will keep posting more of these diary entries as the year progresses, and will
make sure to share bigger findings here and on Twitter.

Feedback and suggestions are appreciated, here or in the comments!

Re: [HOT] Introducing myself to OSM world

2015-06-22 Thread Andrew Buck

Thank you Alfred for introducing yourself to the mailing list and for
your interest in joining our community. Just to let everyone know,
Alfred and I spoke via skype last week and discussed his mapping of
the town of Bo. He has contributed hundreds of POI names and addresses
for the town already and is interested in further collaborating with
HOT in order to more effectively map the town. I suggested that he
post a message here to introduce himself and join the list so we could
discuss with the broader group how best to move forward in finishing
the map of the town.

As it currently stands, the town of Bo has most of the buildings
mapped (although they were apparently mapped from old imagery) as well
as most of the roads. This means the additional tracing work by our
remote volunteers could contribute is somewhat limited, but not
completely impossible to make further contributions. For example, the
imagery the buildings were traced from was mis-aligned according to
bing/gps traces in the area and also the building shapes are not quite
perfect.

This situation means the mapping is a bit trickier than just working
from a blank slate, however I think it is an interesting opportunity
to test our skills on a more complete town as well as working out a
good workflow for integrating remote and on the ground mapping and
trying to find better ways of doing both.

I encourage others who are experienced mappers to have a look at the
town, how it is mapped so far, and to think about how we might move
forward from this point. Alfred is interested in doing more ground
surveys with his team, so I think we can have a really interesting mix
of local and remote participation and this could be a really good test
case for more detailed mapping.

I look forward to hearing what others on the list think about this
project and am excited to see how this will progress.

Thanks for this fantastic study! Your investigation and analysis have
backed up my own personal presumptions in regards to the contributions made
by the amazing volunteers. It is extremely insightful and very beneficial
to see where we should be targeting our efforts to assist mappers both
newcomers and experts.

Kind regards,

Mhairi O'Hara

 Hallo all,

I’d like to share a link to an OSM diary entry where I summarise part of a
HOT study I did earlier this year.

I was interested in understanding how first-time contributors engage with
HOT: how many hours of work do they contribute in the first days, and how
long do they keep contributing to HOT once they joined? I’m comparing three
initiatives: mapping for typhoon Haiyan/Yolanda in Nov 2013, the Ebola
response throughout 2014, and initial months of Missing Maps after November
 2014.

The post with detailed results is here:
 https://www.openstreetmap.org/user/dekstop/diary/35271

And here’s some background on my work:

Will keep posting more of these diary entries as the year progresses, and
will make sure to share bigger findings here and on Twitter.

Feedback and suggestions are appreciated, here or in the comments!

[HOT] Community Mapping and Open Data in Kathmandu and Semarang

2015-06-22 Thread Yantisa Akhadi
Hello all,

I would like to share the article by Shadrock Roberts about community
mapping in two cities, Kathmandu and Semarang. We all have heard how KLL
team and thousands of contributors have done great works in Kathmandu in
the past months. In about the same time, HOT in collaboration with Ushahidi
and Grobak Hysteria have initiate community mapping in Semarang, the
capital of Central Java province, Indonesia. You can read more about it
here:

[HOT] Introducing myself to OSM world

2015-06-22 Thread Alfred Bockarie
Dear All

I am a Sierra Leonean lecturing in the Institute of Environmental
Management and Quality Control, School of Environmental Science, Njala
University Sierra Leone. I also serve as Independent Contractor for
George Mason University as GIS and Database Expert for a disease
surveillance and research laboratory (Mercy Hospital research Lab)
located in Bo City, Sierra Leone. I have done many consultancies for
local and international organisations in Sierra Leone and co-authored
many article publications in science journals. Among my skills
include;

• GIS data capture using GPS and mobile handheld devices (ODK Collect,
Collector for ArcGIS, Avenza pdfmaps, Mytracks etc..)
• GIS mapping using desktop software packages (ArcGIS 10.2,
GlobalMapper, Google Earth and QGIS) and Internet based platforms
(ArcGIS Online, Openstreetmap, Google Map, Mapguide and Ushahidi).
• Development of relational databases for data management and analysis
using MS Access, FileMaker pro and SQL
• Production of electronic based survey forms for mobile data
collection using android devices
• Research data analysis and reporting using SPSS, MS Excel and ArcGIS

I wish to formally join in contributing to openstreet mapping of our
homes, communities and countries to help solve a host of problems we
are currently facing due to lack of spatial data

GIS would have been a better tool to fight the West Africa Ebola
outbreak but the outbreak came in meeting no relevant spatial data in
store. If each incident case would have been mapped from start, it
would have been possible to easily know the outbreak patterns and
hotspot areas, and the statistically significant factors contributing
to the hotspots. Through this, contact tracing could have been more
effective and resources would have been properly allocated.

I want to become a reputable researcher and hardcore professional in
areas of geographic information systems, management information
systems and research. I am operating a registered NGO in Sierra Leone
called Research Agency for Health and Development (RAHD-Salone) with
primary aim to promote research in areas of public and environmental
health. One of our objectives is to provide research tools and
information to organizations in line with their project objectives so
as to be able to solve problems limited by research.

RAHD intends to create a data hub for storage of spatial and textual
data so that researchers national and international can tap from them
for their research work and be able to provide appropriate policy
recommendations.

I hope the OSM community will partner with RAHD in modelling the world
for better planning and easy navigation.

Regards

Alfred S. Bockarie
