[HOT] Crowd2Map rural Tanzania

2016-02-26 Thread Janet Chapman
We're getting people in rural Tanzania to map data about their communities
using EpicollectPlus. Please can anyone advise:

1.if there is any way to tell up to date the Bing satellite images
are and how often they are updated as some of the points we are trying to
add weren't built in the satellite images.

2. Are there any recommended apps to use OSM on android

3. What the best way of publicising the project to people in rural
Tanzania is - currently we have
https://www.facebook.com/groups/1551808625147532/ and @crowd2map

4. If anyone is aware of any other data sets we could incorporate -
thanks Mark Iliffe for links to water points and health facilities

5. We're having a hack day on May 7th in London, Dar es Salaam - and
remotely - so if anyone wants to be involved that would be great!

Many thanks

Janet

[HOT] Crowd2Map Tanzania - adding villages, boosting mobile reception, and OSM apps

2016-03-19 Thread Janet Chapman
Adding villages
We've been collecting data from volunteers on the ground using Epicollect
here http://plus.epicollect.net/TDTschoolsResourceMap/Resources I've now
been adding villages using these instructions
https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B8Qi8bGfITFESmQ2LUJzQzJGTGs/view?usp=sharin
g and username JanetChapman

Please could someone check that I am doing this correctly?

Boosting mobile signal

Does anyone know any cheap ways of boosting mobile reception in rural
Tanzania please?

OSM apps

Can anyone recommend a good Android app to allow people in Tanzania to see
the new data added to OSM. The ones we've tried OSMand and Maps.Me seem to
use old data sets.

Thanks

Message-ID:

Content-Type: text/plain; charset="utf-8"

Hi all,

The Disaster Management Centre of Sri Lanka has provided us with a final area
of interest for mapping. It's the outline of the flooding area around the
Kelani River as of today, May 27, as collected by Sri Lankan Survey Department
assessment teams.

About 85% of the flooding area was covered by our previous mapping from tasks
1913, 1914 and 1915. That data is already being used by the DMC to estimate
damages and plan relief distribution. They would like us to map the flooded
areas not yet mapped so their analysis can be complete and accurate. We've been
told this will be the final request for our services and we can close the
activation after we're done.

I’ve created a new task for these areas at
http://tasks.hotosm.org/project/1934. It covers all the various unmapped flood
areas in the river basin and is hence a bit spread out. The instructions
specify different imagery sources for different areas so pay attention.

Please take a task at http://tasks.hotosm.org/project/1934 and help us complete
our work! Thanks to the help of volunteers like you we’ve done a fantastic job
so far and received a lot of appreciative messages from the DMC. Help us
complete this activation on a strong note!

Yours,
Robert

Any idea when the videos from HOT will be online please? Also the SOTM Day 1
YouTube slides is not synced to the audio by the time it gets to 7 hours, and
Day 3 (Tyler's presentation) is missing. Thanks, Janet

[HOT] Crowd2Map Tanzania to protect girls at risk of FGM - request for validators, particularly on 30th October

2016-10-21 Thread Janet Chapman
Thanks to everyone who has helped so far with
http://tasks.hotosm.org/project/1788
We need to get it finished well before the FGM cutting season starts at the
beginning of December to ensure that all of the villages can be reached. We
are doing an exhibition and workshop at Mozfest
https://app.mozillafestival.org/#_session-609 which we hope will bring in new
mappers. If anyone is able to help, particularly with validating then, we'd be
really grateful. There is a short video on the need for maps
here<https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x1vxrZfLwCM> and another by one of the
girls here<https://youtu.be/wEskE7R3XQk>. Please share with anyone who might
be interested. Many thanks, Janet

2016-11-13 Thread Janet Chapman
Thanks, Pete. The map will help anti FGM campaigners reach the girls at risk
in the villages. We know of girls at risk in at least 2 villages that we don’t
know the location of, and suspect there are many more.

Hi Janet, it would be worth stating why mapping will help... good for
motivation and mapping for FGM is probably quite a conceptual leap for many...

[HOT] Presentations on value of maps to District Medical/Education Officer

Does anyone have any presentations on how maps of their area could help the
work of a District Medical/Education Officer that has never had access to one
of the schools in their area? I'm travelling around Tanzania next week and if
anyone has done this type of informal presentation before I would welcome your

I don’t have a short answer for this, but my feeling is that it’s about initial
training as much about providing a buffer for people who are just curious and
want to click around a bit. Anything that redirects TV audiences to such an
initial buffer is likely a win. Optimally, people who contribute well are then
guided to further projects — for example as part of validator feedback.

Yes, that sounds great. The existing HOT newsletter could be a low-effort means
of starting something like this, e.g. by adding a paragraph on current
initiatives to every email. (Tyler might likely appreciate if someone who’s
plugged into community discourse could provide such paragraphs on short notice.)

[HOT] Mapping International Womens' Day mapping activities

Crowd2Map is planning a number of mapping activities around Mapping to help end

location of all the mappers helping that people could add themselves to.

Is anyone else planning such an initiative? Or have any advice on the best way
to do this?

[HOT] Reminder for Crowd2Map Community Webinar tomorrow at 12 UTC

2017-05-17 Thread Janet Chapman
I'm hoping to that many in the HOT community will be able to join the webinar
tomorrow on:
Crowd2Map is a volunteer run mapping project that has been mapping rural
Tanzania since 2015, particularly to help protect girls from Female Genital
Mutilation (FGM). Since then, Crowd2Map have recruited over 1,300 online
volunteers and 200 local mappers, and mapped over 1.1 million buildings and
64,000 km of roads and tracks. This has all been done on zero budget. Better
maps in Serengeti have helped the number of girls being cut drop from 3700 last
year to 1076 this, and the number of girls dying from 12 to 4.

This year, Crowd2Map are also very excited to be awarded a HOT Microgrant,
which they are using to train village level Legal Officers and Community Change
Agents in 4 different areas of rural Tanzania. During the webinar, Janet will
share the planning for this project, the barriers and enablers we have
identified so far, and seek advice from the HOT community.

[HOT] Women in Technology Session as part of State of the Map Africa - participate online

2017-07-05 Thread Janet Chapman
Dear all
As part of State of the Map Africa on Saturday morning we have organised the
following session and you are welcome to participate remotely here
https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/women-in-technology-and-mapping-session-state-of-the-map-uganda-tickets-35955408595

Also if you cannot participate feel free to send me any comments or questions
by email in advance. The event will also be recorded.

Details below:

Women in Technology and Mapping
Globally there is a lack of diversity in software development and mapping,
resulting in an inherent bias in the way tech applications are developed and
data is collected. This in turn can impact the way that decisions are made in
development planning and disaster risk management, which can have a negative
impact on women and girls.
This session will showcase the achievements of female leaders in technology and
mapping. The panel of discussants will illustrate how diverse perspectives can
lead to different data being collected, new apps created, and better decisions
made. The panel will discuss what can be done to encourage female mappers and
technologists, identifying barriers to their involvement, as well as what
strategies have been successful. It will be facilitated by Angela Oduor
Lungati, Director of Community Engagement, Ushahidi and co-founder of a leading
women in tech organization on Kenya, AkiraChix.

[HOT] Biggest ever mapathon to map rural Tanzania and celebrate 13 years of OpenStreetMap - August 13th/14th

2017-08-04 Thread Janet Chapman
On 13th August OpenStreetMap will be 13 years old and to celebrate
Crowd2Map<https://crowd2map.wordpress.com/> are organising the biggest mapathon
ever to get over 1500 people mapping rural Tanzania in a 24 hour period. It
would be amazing if you could join us by:

*Promoting the event
https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/crowd2map-hosts-the-biggest-online-mapathon-ever-to-get-rural-tanzania-onto-openstreetmap-and-help-tickets-36751714367
 to your your contacts

*Hosting an event at any time in that 24 hour period. Perhaps just a
small one in your home to which you invite a few friends and tell them about
OSM. You can map any of the projects here http://bit.ly/MapTanzania or ask me
to create a custom one.

Many thanks and please let me know if you have any questions, comments or
suggestions, or if you want any more information.

Best wishes and thank you!
Janet

[HOT] Tracking number of mappers in real time - any suggestions please

2017-08-05 Thread Janet Chapman
We are trying to beat the previous record of number of mappers in a remote
mapathon over 24 hours (which I believe from Rebecca is 1500) by tracking the
number of individual mappers editing a task or OSM directly using the hashtag
#crowd2map or Maps.Me in Tanzania in the 24 hours from 11am GMT on Sun 13th
August, to celebrate 13 years of OSM. I will add the #crowd2map hashtag to the
tasks here
http://tasks.hotosm.org/?direction=asc&page=1&search=Tanzania+Development+Trust&sort_by=priority
   during that time frame.

Ideally we'd like to keep a track of the number of different mappers in real
time over the 24 hour period.

Does anyone have any advice on the best way to do this please?

Many thanks, and if anyone is able to introduce new mappers to OSM during this
timeframe to help us we'd be very grateful!Janet

[HOT] Analysis of when mappers joined OSM

2017-08-24 Thread Janet Chapman
Does anyone know how to analyse when mappers in a particular project(s) joined
OSM? We're interested in analysing what proportion of mappers on these
projects are new to OSM
http://tasks.hotosm.org/?direction=asc&page=1&search=Tanzania+Development+Trust&sort_by=priority

Any advice appreciated, thanks.

[HOT] Retention of mappers analysis

2018-05-21 Thread Janet Chapman
Does anyone have a script to analyse information about people mapping using a
particular hashtag please?

We would like to analyse how long our volunteers mapping with
#TanzaniaDevelopmentTrust have been mapping for and how many edits they have
done?

Many thanks

[HOT] Global Mapathon to help end female genital mutilation (FGM) - 28th to 30th September - please help promote!

2018-09-09 Thread Janet Chapman
To coincide with a UN General Assembly High Level Panel event which will
include discussion on how mapping can help the fight against female genital
mutilation (FGM), and a mapathon in New York, we are organising a global
mapathon
https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/global-mapathon-to-help-end-female-genital-mutilation-fgm-tickets-49858325594

We are building a global network to unite people from across the world to help
map areas where girls are at risk of FGM so that activists can better protect
them. We will be posting on social media using #map2endFGM.

Please join us and help spread the word throughout your networks!

We want to include mappers from every country where FGM is an issue.

Many thanks

Janet
