[HOT] Update on HOT's work for Covid-19 in Peru

2020-08-25 Thread Rebecca Firth
Hi everyone,

Several thousand people contributed to the mapping of Cusco region Peru,
where I have spent the past few years living. I wanted to send an update on
the usage of those maps to deliver oxygen to people suffering from Covid,
and to help healthcare authorities manage data about health implications in
the region. Thank you so much to everyone who supported mapping and
validating for the project:

*Subject: *[Secretariat] Consultant for UN Global Platform

Dear Friends,

Many of you have been involved in or know of the UN Global Platform, which
aims to remove barriers to the sharing and use of trusted data and methods
between National Statistics Offices, and with other parts of the data
system. Now that the platform is established, UNSD and GPSDD are working
together to move it on to the next phase of development. To that end, we
are recruiting for a consultant to do research among actual and prospective
users, to explore the context of the emerging market and landscape for data
platforms and infrastructures, and to provide recommendations for how the
Platform should evolve in the next few years.

This is a great opportunity to shape the development of a key part of
global public sector data infrastructure, and we really need the right
person! More details are attached. Please share this in your networks, and
encourage potential candidates to send CVs to myself and Ronald Jansen,
cc’d, *by the 30th July. *

Very best wishes to all, and thanks in advance for your help,

Claire

[HOT] Fwd: EQUALS in Tech Awards

2020-06-15 Thread Rebecca Firth

To:

Dear EQUALS partners;

It’s time to send out the call to find great projects deserving of the *2020
EQUALS in Tech Awards*. We hope we can count on you to spread the word
about the opportunity these awards present to the finalists and winners.
Beyond just bragging rights, the recognized initiatives gain a powerful
network of EQUALS allies, former winners, and community members, all
working toward the same goal: gender digital equality.

As you know, the EQUALS in Tech Awards have been presented since 2013 (they
started out as the GEM-Tech Awards), making this the 7th annual celebration
of groundbreaking work in digital access, skills, leadership, and research.
We know that it is more important than ever to help boost the successes and
stories of programs and people around the world helping women and girls
gain the full benefits of digital equality.

To maximize the number and diversity of nominated initiatives, we need your
help. If the entire EQUALS partnership mobilizes our social media networks
to announce the nominations, we have a chance this year to reach every
corner of the globe and give even the smallest projects the opportunity to
show their progress and perhaps move toward growth, scalability and the
incredible results that the world so desperately needs.

We are asking for your help in two areas:

   1. *Assist with the call for nominations* (see details below, and feel
free to use the attached social media cards to promote the awards)
   2. *Ideas and contributions for a prize package* suitable for a virtual
event (in previous years, the winners got a paid trip to the award ceremony)

The award nomination period will be from *9 June – 1 August 2020*. Awards
are given in five categories:

   - Access
   - Skills
   - Leadership in Tech
   - Leadership in SME
   - Research

In August, a group of finalists will be identified by the judging panel and
those finalists will be promoted widely on our networks. The winners in
each category will be announced in the autumn at a venue to be determined.

Re: [HOT] Experienced JOSM users - place names task in Peru

2020-04-17 Thread Rebecca Firth
Hi,

Marco - The document is set so anyone can view it, but in case that is not
working for some people I have added an offline copy in a previous email
but it is pending an admin of this list to approve it.
John - the data is actually derived from data that is in OSM already based
on the tagging of school locations (which have sub district tagged already)
- it's taken from this field, so the data is already from OSM.

Thanks,

Rebecca

introduction to why maps are needed, and a demonstration of mapping in iD,
then stick around to answer any questions mappers might have. If you're
interested to help out, send me a note :)

Thanks,

Rebecca

I'd like to specifically highlight that the call for speakers at the HOT

[HOT] Fwd: [OSM-talk] OpenStreetMap Awards 2020: calling for nominees

2020-02-25 Thread Rebecca Firth
Hi, forwarding on! Please nominate your fellow OSMers, last year Nathalie
won the Expanding the Community Award, with much applause :)!

-- Forwarded message -
From: Ilya Zverev
Date: Mon, Feb 24, 2020 at 2:03 AM
Subject: [OSM-talk] OpenStreetMap Awards 2020: calling for nominees
To: Talk Openstreetmap

Hi folks,

Once again, it is time to round up everybody who has done anything good
for the map and for the community, and honour their work with an award.
We are preparing the fifth installment of the OSM Awards: please help us
build a long list of nominees.

http://awards.osmz.ru

As always, please sumbit people and projects you have noticed to the
website. Do not choose between who to mention and who isn't "worthy":
this is a call for a long list, which will be shortened later by a
closed voting. You can nominate yourself. You can nominate a friend.
Please do. The only limitation is that the person or a project must have
done something public after the 1st of July 2019. A link would be great.

We haven't changed anything since the last time: only people for the six
categories, and only teams, either communities or businesses, for the
"team" category.

The call for nominees ends on 10th of May. Which does not mean you can
postpone and eventually forget about the call. Please read the next
WeeklyOSM with the idea of nominating people in mind. Look at tools you
use and blogs you read. While saying thanks to a neighbouring mapper,
consider nominating them. By doing that, you validate their efforts and
make their year a little brighter. We all need that.

Please nominate: http://awards.osmz.ru

[HOT] Cyclone Idai update

2019-04-01 Thread Rebecca Firth
Hi everyone,

Please find an update on HOT's work for Cyclone Idai & ways to support in
this blog:
https://www.hotosm.org/updates/cyclone-idai-how-can-you-help-by-mapping/

I particularly wanted to highlight these two quotes from those using the
data:

Medecins Sans Frontieres: “It is now almost a reflex for MSF teams in an
emergency setting to ask for GIS support for epidemiology response by
mapping out cases to see where patients come from... They also need GIS
support for water and sanitation assessments, to map out where the water
points and latrines are.”

IFRC: “IFRC will use this content to support the Mozambique Red Cross (CVM)
to deliver assistance to 200,000 people with a focus on the following areas
of focus: shelter, health, water, sanitation and hygiene promotion,
livelihood and basic needs, Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR), protection,
gender and inclusion.”

[HOT] Cyclone Idai: support roles

2019-03-29 Thread Rebecca Firth
Hi,

In response to requests from several humanitarian partners, we are scaling
HOT's Cyclone Idai response <https://www.hotosm.org/projects/CycloneIdai>.
We anticipate needing support in the below areas:

   - Data specialist: to support with data imports, exports
   - Partner liaison: to coordinate with humanitarian partners to help
understand their data use cases, and help them use the data created

If you are interested to support, please reply to russell.deff...@hotosm.org
& rebecca.fi...@hotosm.org stating the below. We're looking for people
available to start immediately.

   - Which area you're interested to support in
   - A short summary of your relevant experience
   - How many hours a week you're available
   - If you're interested to support as a volunteer, or would need
   reimbursement for time spent working

And as I'm sure many of you know already, MSF, IFRC and British Red Cross
are out in the affected areas, using the maps we're creating and
identifying new priorities each day - please help with mapping and
validating if you can!

[HOT] Launching Microgrants 2019!

2019-01-25 Thread Rebecca Firth
Hi HOT Community,

Very pleased to announce the launch of Microgrants 2019! Please find all
details and the application form on the website:
https://www.hotosm.org/updates/2019-hot-microgrants-program-empowering-local-openstreetmap-communities/

We've made some exciting changes to the program this year, including
expanding the types of projects we'd like to support, and introducing a
vote between HOT Voting Members to give a follow on grant to a 2018 grantee
- more details on this to follow to the membership. We'll also be reaching
out to Voting Members shortly to see who might be interested to join the
application review panel. If you'd like to join, let me know.

Thanks again to everyone who donated to the #mapthedifference campaign in
December, and to our corporate contributors Digital Globe, Salesforce
France, New Light Technologies, Geoawesomeness, and OpenCage. Together we
raised nearly $34,000 to make Microgrants this year possible!

Thanks,

Rebecca

[HOT] New team member & Women Connect project launch!

2019-01-17 Thread Rebecca Firth
Hi,

It's my pleasure to introduce both a new person and a new project!

Jess Bergman recently joined our team as a Partnerships and Community
Programs Associate, based out of our office in Kampala. She'll be
supporting our community grants programs and corporate partner
relationships as they scale. More on her here
https://www.hotosm.org/people/jessica-bergmann/ & please give her a warm
welcome as she onboards into all things HOT!

This month we're also kicking off our Women Connect project! Whilst gender
equality has been a focus for HOT over many years, this is our first
explicit program working to include women and girls in mapping gendered
issues which affect them in their local communities. More on the program
here:
https://www.hotosm.org/projects/women-connect-number-letgirlsmap-growing-female-open-data-leaders-across-5-continents/

Thanks, and please get in touch with any questions,

[HOT] Citizen generated data & HOT

2018-12-19 Thread Rebecca Firth
Hi,

Over the past year HOT has been facilitating a Task Team within the Global
Partnership for Sustainable Development to think about how Citizen
Generated Data (CGD) can better support the achievement and monitoring of
the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The Task Team brings together 30+
CGD practitioners to try to understand parallels between CGD projects and
what factors are correlated with increasing data quality. We've produced a
guide & report for others looking to grow their work in CGD to support the
SDGs. Sharing links below in case anyone would like to read (particularly
HOT's case studies).

Subject: Call for Funded Case Studies: Urban Data in the Global South
To: Richard Heeks

**Please forward to relevant potential applicants**

We are issuing a call for funded case studies: critical analyses of urban
data in the global South that will help build the evidence base on “data
justice”; particularly relating to those living in slums and informal
settlements.

We are seeking proposals of 500-1,000 words by *Friday 23 Nov 2018*. Those
selected will be published as working papers and build an agenda for future
research. We will seek opportunities to publish the collection as a
journal special issue, and for papers to be presented at a project
workshop. A payment of £2,500 per case will be made, with the case studies
forming part of a Senior Research Fellowship funded by the University of
Manchester’s Sustainable Consumption Institute
<https://www.sci.manchester.ac.uk/>.

For further details on the background, required case study, proposal
format, and timetable, see the main call document
<https://drive.google.com/file/d/1CCT9qBgv2s5ArwPRVj9MCQU92lK_Rdvd/view?usp=sharing>
.

If you have any questions, do ask. This call is also available at:

Re: [HOT] Community Knowledge Sharing Webinars

2018-07-11 Thread Rebecca Firth
Hi,

The webinars kicked off today with great presentations from #LetGirlsMap
Unique Mappers Team in Nigeria, the GeoChicas in Latin America, and
Crowd2Map in Tanzania. All the presentations shared examples of the ways in
which their projects have both been affected by, and tried to address
issues of social gender norms in the communities they work in, and the ways
in which these are affecting the participation of women and girls in
mapping.

Tomorrow, we have two more webinars on Data Integration and Advocacy,
details to sign up..
*Data Integration*
*Topic: Mapeando Meu Bairro, Mongolian YouthMappers and OSM Zambia will be
sharing how they engage with different local actors to ensure the data they
produce is relevant Date: July 12th 11am-12pm

*Advocacy*

evacuated and 120,000 at risk. Fundacion OSM Colombia have created a task
on their Tasking Manager: https://tareas.openstreetmap.co/project/108 Any
mapping support will be very appreciated!

Copying in Juliana and Fernando from OSM Colombia who are working on this

[HOT] Citizen Generated Data - consultancy opportunity

2018-05-16 Thread Rebecca Firth
Hi,

HOT has been working with the Global Partnership for Sustainable
Development Data (GPSDD) with the goal of better demonstrating how citizen
and community generated data can support the Sustainable Development Goals.
GPSDD has opened up a consultancy piece to conduct research and analysis
aiming to 1) produce recommendations on what types of CGD initiatives are
best suited to different purposes, actors, and needs, and what this means
for their potential to scale and be combined with other data sources, and
2) produce guidance aimed primarily at official stakeholders at all levels
of government and international organizations, on how to navigate and
engage with the different types of CGD initiatives.

If you're interested to apply, you can find more details here:
http://www.data4sdgs.org/vacancies-and-opportunities

Secondly, if you're interested to join the Task Team, we're working around
these objectives - send me an email and I'll add you into the group:

   1. Identifying promising examples of CGD approaches / methodologies to
categorise and share with international community - key thing here for me
is the methodology. Can we draw up some sort of 'best practice in CGD',
agree it with some powers that be, then use that to say 'hey, our data's
   pretty good'.
   2. Identifying CGD initiatives that can (or could) provide robust data
at scale to support implementation and monitoring of the SDGs - I've not
yet seen a country/multi-country project I think really hits this.
   3. Recommendations for ensuring quality, relevance and added value of
citizen generated data, and documentation of key benefits of citizen
generated data - I'm not such a fan of this one, but keen for it to focus
on breadth - i.e. what questions can we answer via CGD that formal data
collectors can't, or as HOT, what questions can we answer through community
led projects that top down organisations/government can't - the South
Sudanese refugee in Uganda project we have is the ideal example. Refugees
are likely not counted in a data source in their country of origin due to
infrequent census, low birth registration, etc, no fixed address and not
settled in a camp when they arrive, plus on the whole will avoid any MICS -
very difficult for the government to gather/access data on this population
without working through an organisation like HOT.

Thanks,

Rebecca

[HOT] Diverse conferences need you!

2018-04-12 Thread Rebecca Firth
Hi

The HOT and FOSS4G community have been working hard to develop the
conference Code of Conduct for the upcoming event in Tanzania (
http://2018.foss4g.org/). The goal is to ensure the conference is as
welcoming and safe as it can be, and maintain a commitment to diverse and
inclusive conferences. Part of this means hosting conferences in countries
where HOT works as an organisation and where there are strong local OSM
communities. However, this does raise important concerns about safety and
security for attendees. We hope a re-drafted CoC will help all future
events happening in countries with similar local laws to Tanzania, to
ensure they can protect the interests and security of attendees as best as
possible. SOTM Africa, future, SOTMs, etc etc..

The Summit/FOSS4G Working Groups have a re-drafted policy and would love
feedback from an as-diverse-as-possible group. If you're keen to support,
please get in touch with Amelia and Rachel in copy, who will send you a
copy of the policy and gladly hear your feedback.

Thanks,

[HOT] International Women's Day: 8th March

2018-03-07 Thread Rebecca Firth
Hi,

International Women's Day is tomorrow. Pushing for gender equality and
ensuring a safe and respectful environment for all contributors is one of
HOT's main objectives. Unfortunately gender imbalance in OSM remains very
high, and efforts to address this often meet with negativity (see
yesterday's diversity talk list for a very recent example). This blog
shares 7 different ways you can help to support gender equality in
OpenStreetMap this International Women's Day:

Hi,

We've some groups interested to host a mapathon in San Fran, Portland and
Miami next week on Wednesday. They've asked if there might be anyone keen
to support their mapathons in person. If you're based in any of those
places and might be interested to help out, please let me know! There's a
free meal in it for you...

Thanks,

[HOT] Funding opportunity - social entrepreneurs

2017-10-02 Thread Rebecca Firth
Hi,

The Nestle Creating Shared Value Prize is seeking global applications from
social and private enterprises and non-governmental organizations (NGOs)
solving issues in nutrition, water or rural development. The prize is for
social entrepreneurs looking for avenues to scaling their ventures. The
competition seeks to support and accelerate the growth of initiatives
solving significant issues in water, nutrition and rural development. To be
eligible for the prize, applicants should have a proven concept tested
through a pilot or small-scale enterprise, have the potential to scale and
be replicated in other communities, aims to make a social impact improving
nutrition, enhancing rural development and access to clean water or water
management, plus a viable business model.

The deadline is Oct 31st. Happy to support reviewing any proposals if
useful. You can apply at: www.changemakers.com/creativesharedvalue, or
nominate businesses and social enterprises by emailing csvpr...@ashoka.org

Thanks,

Rebecca

and you can vote for it here

[HOT] Experienced road network mappers - Salima District, Malawi

2017-05-19 Thread Rebecca Firth
Hi All,

We have set up two small projects to map the road network in Salima
District, Malawi, to support UNICEF projects working on the ground. UNICEF
are finding it difficult to work in the region without an accurate road
network map, as navigation and deliveries for all their projects is
continually delayed causing unexpected changes to project timelines and
costs.

The projects are around half way done, but would really benefit from a
couple of experienced road mappers jumping on to map + validate the data.
The tasks are here, if anyone wants to jump on:
http://tasks.hotosm.org/?sort_by=priority&direction=asc&search=Salima+District

Have a lovely weekend,

Rebecca

Re: [HOT] Malaria Elimination Campaign Status

2017-05-09 Thread Rebecca Firth
Hi Florian,

We've finished the mapping in Honduras, Guatemala and Botswana. We have 2.5
large districts remaining in Zimbabwe, and one in Zambia. Cambodia and Laos
are currently going through Mapswipe but we estimate about 10 Cambodia
projects and about 30 in Laos. For this campaign we are mapping buildings
only, as this is what is needed most urgently for malaria elimination
campaigns. More detail on how the data is used here
<http://www.clintonhealthaccess.org/improving-impact-indoor-residual-spraying-southern-africa-data-driven-approaches/>.
However, it would be fantastic to improve the map in the future with roads.
It's likely HOT will be working on mapping for malaria elimination in
future countries.

A great visualisation to show progress of the mapping so far (over 1.7
million buildings mapped!) is here
<https://www.mapbox.com/malaria-mapping/#6.41/-18.659/24.888>.

There is still quite a lot of mapping left to do. Russ is working hard to
keep tasks constantly available at this link
<http://tasks.hotosm.org/?sort_by=priority&direction=asc&search=eliminate+malaria>
through
to the end of the campaign, and we have 7 more Mapswipe tasks in Laos.

Thanks very much to all those who have contributed to the mapping so far.
Feel free to get in touch with myself and/or Russ directly if you have any
more questions, there are more resources we can share on the impact of the
data in field projects.

[HOT] World Malaria Day: Tuesday April 25th

2017-04-21 Thread Rebecca Firth
Hi All,

It's World Malaria Day on Tuesday, and we're coordinating a 24 hour global
mapathon to map for our Malaria Elimination projects <http://bit.ly/2miQUyZ>.
This week we passed a major milestone, mapping over *1,000,000 buildings*
for malaria elimination! We still have a long way to go, and your support
is greatly appreciated.

We'd love for you to get involved as an individual, with family and
friends, or set up a mapathon. A bit more information is available here
<https://www.hotosm.org/updates/2017-04-21_world_malaria_day_map_to_help_malaria_elimination_worldwide>,
and you can register here
<https://www.eventbrite.com/e/world-malaria-day-24-hour-global-mapathon-tickets-33937101785>
.

Additionally, the top two mappers on World Malaria Day will receive a HOT
Thank You pack as a token of our appreciation. Please feel free to get in
touch with questions.

Thanks,

[HOT] Will you support local mapathons?

2017-04-11 Thread Rebecca Firth
Hi HOT Community,

We have developed a tool to try to connect our experienced mappers
worldwide with people who are looking to set up mapathons. If you're keen
to help the setup of mapathons where you live, you can sign up by scrolling
to the bottom here <http://www.missingmaps.org/host/>.

We will display a map on the HOT and Missing Maps websites, with flags
displayed where we have volunteers. You can volunteer to attend in person,
or you can offer support remotely.

Additionally, if you are interested in running a mapathon yourself, there
are lots of materials to support you to do this here
<http://www.missingmaps.org/host/>. We are also happy to answer questions
via i...@hotosm.org.

We currently have a lot of mapping and Mapswiping to do for malaria
elimination. You can support by mapping these projects
<http://tasks.hotosm.org/?sort_by=priority&direction=asc&search=eliminate+malaria>,
swiping Cambodia and Laos on the Mapswipe app <https://mapswipe.org/>, or
by hosting a mapathon.

Thank you for your continued support,

Rebecca

[HOT] GEO: free virtual seminars

2017-03-22 Thread Rebecca Firth
Hi All,

Sharing details on upcoming virtual seminars provided by HOT partner GEO
(Group on Earth Observations) <https://www.earthobservations.org/index.php>
for anyone interested:

The GCI is the GEOSS Common Infrastructure (GEOSS is the Global Earth
Observation System of Systems that GEO has been building for the last
decade). The GEOSS Portal: geoportal.org with 200m+ open Earth observation
data resources is part of the GCI: OSM data is brokered via the GCI and HOT
OSM is a participating organisation in GEO.

As part of GEO's user requirements gathering for the GCI, there have been a
series of free virtual seminars on topics related to the thematic areas
where open EO data is available in the GCI. The next seminar is on 29th
March: http://www.earthobservations.org/documents/meetings/20170329_
gci_water/20170329_gci_water_agenda.pdf

The seminars are managed by the GEO Secretariat, the National Research
Council for Italy and the European Space Agency. The presenters are the
leads from implementation activities linked to the GEO Work Programme:
Copernicus DIAS (Data and Information Access Service), GDIS (Global Drought
Information System), GEOGLOWS (GEO Global Water Sustainability), Aquawatch
(GEO Water Quality Community of Practice) and GEOCRI (GEO Cold Regions
Initiative). Please register if you are interested.

[HOT] Mapathon organisers: we need your help to Map for Malaria

2017-03-21 Thread Rebecca Firth
Hi,

If you're planning a mapathon over the next few months, we'd love it if you
could support our Malaria Elimination Mapping project.

It is by far our largest project to date, with 500,000km squared of mapping
to do! We're about to complete our 100th project, so are making good
progress, but we still have a very long way to go and would love your help.

By way of incentive, HOT can provide a small prize for the top mapper at
your event. If you're interested to support, send me a message and I will
send through more details.

For those of you not attending a mapathon, but keen to support the project,
tasks are added to this list
<http://tasks.hotosm.org/?direction=asc&page=1&search=eliminate+malaria&sort_by=priority>
every day as we progress, and your mapping would be appreciated!

Thanks,

Rebecca

Re: [HOT] Bounding box not in iD Editor anymore

2017-03-03 Thread Rebecca Firth
Appreciate all the hard work going into getting this fixed - thank you very
much, especially to David who was meant to have been enjoying some time off.

Luckily there is a workaround which means iD mapping is still possible! I
hasten to add, it wasn't figured out by me. If you're mapping this weekend,
you can use this:

   1. Load task in iD
   2. Return to Task on TM, go back to 'edit with' and select JOSM
   3. You will get an error message about JOSM remote control, but it will
give you access to a section of the JOSM menu
   4. From the section that reads "*Tip: Download the following .gpx file
<http://tasks.hotosm.org/project/2442/task/211.gpx> and load it in JOSM in
order to see the current task boundary" *right click on *".gpx file" *and
select *"Save link as" -* I put mine in my downloads folder.
   5. Back to the iD *tab in your browser, and have file manager open as
well - drag & drop the downloaded .gpx file onto the window of ID -- then
   wait...*
   6. If all goes well you now have the square on your iD screen.* It took
a while to load on my setup & a message about waiting or closing appeared -
but it has loaded each time I've tried.*

Thanks, and if you have any questions send them through to i...@hotosm.org.

Re: [HOT] Bounding box not in iD Editor anymore

2017-02-27 Thread Rebecca Firth
Hi All,

Re-kindling this thread as another mapper and myself appear to be
experiencing the bounding box issue again (in Safari and Chrome) across a
few different tasks.

Re-pasting the workaround instructions from before for anyone mapping
presently:

   1. Load task in iD
   2. Return to Task on TM, go back to 'edit with' and select JOSM
   3. You will get an error message about JOSM remote control, but it will
give you access to a section of the JOSM menu
   4. From the section that reads "*Tip: Download the following .gpx file
<http://tasks.hotosm.org/project/2442/task/211.gpx> and load it in JOSM in

select *"Save link as" -* I put mine in my downloads folder.
   5. Back to the iD *tab in your browser, and have file manager open as
well - drag & drop the downloaded .gpx file onto the window of ID -- then
   wait...*
   6. If all goes well you now have the square on your iD screen.* It took
a while to load on my setup & a message about waiting or closing appeared -
but it has loaded each time I've tried. *

Thanks,
