[IAEP] Sugar Labs oversight board elections -- volunteer(s) needed
We will be holding an election for some open seats for the oversight board (SLOB) later this month. Since Ibiam is a candidate, it is inappropriate for him to administer the election. Hence we are looking for a volunteer to be the one to run the election. We can walk you through the mechanics of what needs to be done, but it is important for the integrity of the election that we find an independent administrator. Please contact me directly if you are interested. regards. -walter -- Walter Bender Sugar Labs http://www.sugarlabs.org <http://www.sugarlabs.org> ___ IAEP -- It's An Education Project (not a laptop project!) [IAEP] GCI background
As I mentioned in my earlier email, Sugar Labs has been selected to participate in Google Code-in (GCI) 2019. It is a really fun program and represents a great opportunity for the community to reach out to new contributors. The contest begins on December 2, 2019, so we have about one month to prepare. For those of you who are volunteering to be a mentors, I will be sending out invitations to formally sign up as mentors over the next few days, so keep an eye out for the invitation. Meanwhile, I wanted to share some general information with you and the Sugar Labs community. * The GCI admins are myself, Lionel, and Ibiam. * We will be using the sugar-devel mailing list [0] for all of our general GCI correspondence. This ensures that any discussions are public and that the entire community can participate. By “general”, I mean discussions about process, time lines, etc. * We will be using #sugar on irc.freenode.net as our help line for the GCI students. It is important that we keep as close to 24/7 coverage as possible, as we anticipate participation from students from almost every timezone. If you do not have an IRC account, please see [1] for details. * The GCI website maintains a mechanism for corresponding with the students regarding individual tasks. That thread is only accessible to students and mentors. It is meant for private feedback to the student. * We maintain a wiki page for Sugar-Labs-specific GCI information [2]. * Further details about the rules, guidelines for mentorship, etc. can be found on the GCI website [3]. Mentor-specific guidelines are here: https://developers.google.com/open-source/gci/help/responsibilities * It is important to remember that we are working with youths, ages 13-17, many of whom are participating in order to learn. So please be appropriate in your language and please be patient. Also, we need to be protective of their privacy, so do not share or solicit any personal information. About tasks: At the heart of GCI are the tasks. These are bite size (and not so bite size) challenges for the students. Each task can take from 3-7 days and they can span a variety of areas: Code: Tasks related to writing or refactoring code Documentation/Training: Tasks related to creating/editing documents and helping others learn more Outreach/Research: Tasks related to community management, outreach/marketing, or studying problems and recommending solutions Quality Assurance: Tasks related to testing and ensuring code is of high quality Design: Tasks related to user experience research or user interface design and interaction More details on what these categories mean is available on the GCI website. It is our responsibility as a participating organization to come up with the task list. We need to have around 100 tasks defined before the content begins and will need at least 300 to keep pace as the contest progresses. Open issues generally make good tasks. More suggestions can be found in the wiki [4]. (Music Blocks alone we have more than 200, so I don’t anticipate running short.) Mentors can enter task suggestions directly into the GCI system [5]. For everyone else, feel free to share on the sugar-devel list. Suggests for tasks can come from any mentor or community member but the approval of tasks is done only by an administrator. All tasks should be written with the same clarity one would expect in a ticket: a detailed description of the challenge and suggestions as to resources that might be of use. You can include links in a task description, to an issue, for example, but the task description should be largely self-explanatory. We adhere to the same standards and processes of contributions for GCI tasks as any other contribution, so please familiarize yourself with the Contributor’s Guide [6]. Before the contest begins, I will send out more details about reviewing and approving student work. It is imperative that we maintain consistent and high standards for all submissions. Finally, as I said at the start, GCI is fun. Enjoy. regards. -walter [0] lists.sugarlabs.org/sugar-devel [1] https://wiki.sugarlabs.org/go/Google_Code_In_2019#Getting_set_up_on_IRC [2] https://wiki.sugarlabs.org/go/Google_Code_In_2019 [3] https://codein.withgoogle.com/ [4] https://wiki.sugarlabs.org/go/Google_Code_In_2019#This_is_a_stub_for_25.2B_example_tasks_new_for_GCI_2019 . [IAEP] Sugar Labs changing directions
For those of you who were not able to attend the most recent Sugar Labs oversight board meeting [1], on 3 May, I wanted to share with you an important decision made by the board. Sugar Labs has been a member project of the SFC since 2008 and operated under the SFC guidelines during that period. For the most part it has been a productive and amicable relationship but there have been a few bumps in the road, when Sugar Labs community members have had difficulty adhering to some of the SFC guidelines. After several attempts to foster a less contentious relationship, it was determined that the best course of action is to make a change. The board unanimously passed a motion to form a 501(c)(3) with the intent of moving Sugar Labs resources, infrastructure, and funds into it. [2] Devin Ulibarri, our Software Freedom Conservancy (SFC) liaison communicated this decision to Karen Sandler, the executive director of the SFC, who responded that the SFC would "be happy to help form the new organization." Personally, I consider our membership in the SFC as a way-point along a continuing journey to bring the best in Free/Libre software to education. While I appreciate the work we have done with the SFC for more than ten years, I look forward to a new model of independence for Sugar Labs. The oversight board will keep the community informed of our progress towards establishing the 501(c)(3) organization. Community input, as always, is most welcome. regards, Walter Bender on behalf of the Sugar Labs oversight board [1] http://meeting.sugarlabs.org/sugar-meeting/meetings/2019-05-03 [2] https://www.501c3.org/what-is-a-501c3/ -- Walter Bender Sugar Labs http://www.sugarlabs.org <http://www.sugarlabs.org> ___ IAEP -- It's An Education Project (not a laptop project!) This includes not just the bits we deliver, but the organization through which we deliver them. (2) I think we need to also focus on a few** high-potential opportunities for deployments. In my opinion, that includes continuing to support the OLPC deployments on whatever hardware and OS they are using, focusing on RPi and other devices favored by the Maker community, and continuing to leverage the potential of piggybacking on distributions such as Fedora and Debian in the form of spins or mixes. We need to make it easier for people to get started... even Sugar on a Stick is too much for most potential users. (3) We need to do a better job of packaging the Sugar experience for potential deployments. I had written pretty detailed deployment guides back in the OLPC days. We need something more contemporary that helps people get started and points them towards realizing the true vision of learning with Sugar. * We have fallen short of the deploy side of late in part because of the disconnect described by Tony, which I think exists for reasons other than he asserted. ** We have very limited developer cycles these days, so we need to choose our opportunities wisely. (Sugarizer and Music Blocks are JavaScript and hence would not be appropriate topics for this venue.) To me the thing that is most interesting is the scaffolding we built into Sugar to expose the underlying Python code to our users (e.g., view source) and to encourage them to explore on their own (the copy mechanism that gives them them their own copy of a an activity to modify, Pippy, which is a Python playpen and can be used to create new Sugar activities, and Turtle Blocks, that provides a Python version of anything they write in the Logo block language. Also, the IRC activity, which invites newbie developers to follow the discussions of seasoned developers. All of these are topics I touched upon in my 2013 talk at PyCon. regards. -walter -- Walter Bender Sugar Labs http://www.sugarlabs.org <http://www.sugarlabs.org> ___ IAEP -- It's An Education Project (not a laptop project!) [IAEP] welcoming the new Sugar Labs oversight board members
I hope everyone is well. We are in a seasonal transition -- winter has begun in the north and summer in the south. I wanted to convey holiday greetings to everyone in the community and also to provide some updates: * We have a new oversight board. Welcome to James Cameron, Alex Perez, and Devin Ulibarri. Lionel Laske and I were reelected to our seats. Claudia Urrea and Samson Goddy will be completing their two-year terms in 2019. I think we have a very strong group, with demonstrable dedication to Sugar Labs and its mission and I look forward to having a very productive (and fun) year. * Many thanks to Adam, Sameer, and Ignacio, all three of whom have dedicated many years of effort to the project and the community. Your contributions are appreciated. * James will be taking over for me as chair of the oversight board meetings -- he runs a much better meeting than I do and I think it will be a change for the better in terms of making us a more efficient organization, able to make more thoughtful decisions more quickly. * James will also be replacing Adam as the Sugar Labs liaison to the Software Freedom Conservancy. I know he will offer a level of professionalism that will hopefully lead to clear and timely communication between our organizations. A few heads up: * Devin and I head to Japan to run some Music Blocks workshops in early January as part of an ongoing effort to reach elementary schools throughout the country. It has been going really well so far and I have high hopes that this little bit of Sugar will be used and enjoyed widely. * Rahul Bothra is helping to organize a new set of landing pages for Google Summer of Code. I anticipate that Sugar Labs will be applying again this year and we are striving to be more organized than in years past. * The winners of the Google Code-in contest will be announce in two weeks by Google. We had some fantastic contributions this year. Thank you for all the help with organizing (Ibiam), mentoring, and participation. Make sure to spend some time with family over these short (or long) days. regards. -walter -- Walter Bender Sugar Labs http://www.sugarlabs.org <http://www.sugarlabs.org> ___ IAEP -- It's An Education Project (not a laptop project!) We'll be holding an election for 4 seats on our oversight board. The election will be held in early December. (1) If you are interested in helping run the election, please let Samson Goddy, Caryl Bigelow, and/or Dave Crossland know. (2) If you are interested in a running for open board seat, please let Samson, Cayrl, or Dave know. The minimum obligation of board members is 1 hour per month meeting and a light email load. [IAEP] [SLOB] Jaskirat travel
As per the discussion with Brett [sfconservancy.org #1917], Jaskirat has asked for a travel advance for his trip to Google, where he will be representing Sugar Labs at both the GSOC Meetup and the Mentor Summit. [IAEP] [SLOB] motion regarding GSoC mentor travel
Background: Google has provided SL with $3000 towards mentor travel to the October summit. ($3300 - the SFC 10%) although we have yet to receive $1100 of the funds. We have also received $5400 in mentor "stipends" ($6000 - the SFC 10%). As you may recall, we are sending three people, Devin, Jaskirat, and Shrivank. Only Jaskirat is traveling internationally, so the best estimate is that the travel will come in on budget. As we did last year, we could apply some of the mentor stipend $$ to cover any overruns. (Note we have already approved a previous motion to approve a travel advance for Jaskirat to attend the Google Summer of Code mentor summit in October 2018. [1]) The SFC estimates a cost increase in Jaskirat's ticket of $400-$500 due to his intention to travel some while in the States (to visit some Sugar Labs people and his cousin in DC.) Jaskirat is paying for his domestic travel, but the round trip in and out of SF is apparently less expensive, hence the need for SLOB approval. IMHO, we should be extending opportunities for community members whenever possible. Motion: To approve the additional cost associated with Jaskirat's ticket to and from the GSoC summit as calculated by the SFC. If for some reason the total budget for GSoC summit travel exceeds $3000, we can apply Jaskirat's and my share of the GSoC mentor stipend to cover the overrun. [IAEP] [SLOB] approval needed for Bender's GCI travel expenses
Fellow oversight board members, I would appreciate if someone would propose a motion as per Bradley's email below so that I can get reimbursed for my travel to the Google Mentor Summit. thx. -walter -- Forwarded message - From: Bradley M. Kuhn via RT Date: Fri, Jul 6, 2018 at 8:04 PM Subject: [sfconservancy.org #898] SLOBS approval needed for Bender's GCI travel expenses. To: Walter Bender via RT wrote on Sunday, 1 July: > As you know, Google sponsors one mentor from each participating org to > attend the summit and the costs of the trip are passed through to Google. ... > Please contact me if you have any further questions. This assessment is actually no longer accurate, and as such, we need approval from SLOBs to proceed with the travel reimbursement, just like we do with any other. Adam, could you as Representative communicate that SLOBs approved $614.03 for Walter's travel. Reasons we need such approval are below: The information that Walter relied on to write the above is out of date. A few years ago, Google changed the nature of the way payments are made for GCI and GSoC. While, informally, Google requests that a certain part of the payments be used for travel expenses for the GCI and GSoC Mentor Summits (respectively) there is no longer a formal requirement, agreement, nor arrangement that requires Conservancy (and its Sugar Labs project) to use these funds for that purpose. Sugar Labs could use the funds for any purpose that fits within the project and Conservancy's charitable mission. Thus, under the FSA with Conservancy, it's up to Sugar Labs to recommend that how we spend the funds. As you decide on whether you'd like to pay the funds for this purpose, note that Bender's expenses are substantially less than the amount given as a donation for GCI. Sugar received $7,380.00 total for its participation in GCI 2017 Finally, please avoid the phrase "pass through" with regard to funds at Conservancy. Regardless of any specific donation situation, Conservancy *does not* do any activity as a "pass through" fiscal sponsor. That phrase has specific meaning in USA-non-profit circles and that's never what we're doing here, no matter what. Meanwhile, Walter, there's a receipt missing: > $25 Baggage fee* > * My restricted fare on United did not allow me any luggage beyond a > personal bag for my laptop. I managed on the way out, but could not > manage on the way back, hence I had to check a bag. This is within policy, but it does require a receipt when proposed as a stand-alone expense. It looks like you didn't attach the receipt. (I noticed you attached the same file twice, so I suspect that there is another file of receipts we haven't gotten yet). AFIAK, all major airline give a receipt for checked luggage at the time they collect payment. If you lost that, in my experience, you can get the receipt from the airline's website from your account after the fact. Please send along the $25 receipt. Everything else seems well documented. Note in future you don't need to include receipts for M&IE; please take a look at the travel policy section regarding that: https://sfconservancy.org/projects/policies/conservancy-travel-policy.html -- Walter Bender Sugar Labs http://www.sugarlabs.org <http://www.sugarlabs.org> ___ IAEP -- It's An Education Project (not a laptop project!) [IAEP] [SLOB] Action required: Devin Ulibarri travel/stipend
I was hoping to discuss this at the May meeting, but no one was able to attend that meeting. Devin went to Japan to run some Music Blocks workshops. We had allocated a budget for him was US $1200 for his ticket and US $50 for local expenses (See [1]). Devin incurred some additional expenses above and beyond what we budgeted -- extra local travel and some equipment needed for the workshops (speakers). One of the schools he visited -- the Yokohama Science Frontiers school -- offered Devin an honorarium of ~US $500, which they sent to the SFC. ,These funds would cover his additional costs. The SFC won't release this money without our approval. It would amount to US $450 after the 10% allocation by the SFC. Motion: Approve the payment of US $450 as an honorarium to Devin Ulibarri for his workshops in Japan. I don't think there is anything controversial here, but of course, your feedback (and community feedback) is most appreciated. Someone would have to second this motion so that we can vote on it. Re: [IAEP] The Verge article on OLPC/Sugar
FWIW, there was never an offer from Apple to offer a free (gratis) version of iOS for OLPC use and it is not obvious that it was technically feasible on the microprocessor we were using at the time. And certainly a free (libre) version was never even up for discussion. We did have an in-depth discussion with MS at the highest level about jointly creating a new OS (not a Windows port) but that discussion stalled out when free (libre) software was raised as a requirement. It is also worth speculating as to the number of XO-1s still in the hands of children in 2018 vs the number of iPhone-1s. The article did not touch upon the efforts we made to keep these machines out of landfills and when they did reach end of life, to make their environmental impact minimal: e.g., the first laptop to use an LED back light instead of fluorescent, etc. @Caryl: we ended up moving away from human-powered to solar-powered as it was less expensive, more robust, and less physically taxing on the kids. The XO-4 ran (runs) very nicely on a small panel. But ultimately, it is about what the kids do with the machine, which is why I remain passionate about Sugar. regards. -walter On Mon, Apr 16, 2018 at 5:28 PM Caryl Bigenho wrote: > Thanks to Dave for sharing this fun, interesting article! [IAEP] Claudia Urrea
I am very please to be able to announce that, by a unanimous decision, Claudia Urrea has been appointed to fill the Sugar Labs oversight board seat vacated by Laura Vargas. Many of you know Claudia -- she brings a depth of experience with Sugar, OLPC, and technology and K-12 education. She is a long-time member of our community who has made numerous, thoughtful contributions. She is a great addition to the board and I very much look forward to working with her in that capacity. regards. -walter -- Walter Bender Sugar Labs http://www.sugarlabs.org <http://www.sugarlabs.org> ___ IAEP -- It's An Education Project (not a laptop project!) [IAEP] email motion 2017-19
Motion: To appoint Claudia Urrea to the oversight-board seat that opened due to the resignation of Laura Vargas. This temporary appointment would last until the next oversight board election in 2018. This was discussed at today's oversight-board meeting [1], but since we lacked a quorum we could not take a vote. Hence this email. Please respond ASAP. The gist of the discussion was: #topic replacing Laura on the board Laura Vargas has resigned her seat on the board. I think we should fill the vacancy with a temporary appointment. Her seat was up in fall 2018. So it would be a 9-10 month appointment. I propose Claudia Urrea for several reasons: (1) she got the most votes in the last election (missing a seat on the board by just one vote) (2) she is very experienced with Sugar and our target audience (3) she brings academic and education experience to the mix (4) she is a thoughtful, long-term contributor to the community (5) and she is a very respectful colleague Her state of objects from the last election can be found at [2]. regards. -walter [1] http://meeting.sugarlabs.org/sugar-meeting/meetings/2017-12-01T19:05:26 [2] https://wiki.sugarlabs.org/go/Oversight_Board/2017-2019-candidates#Claudia_Urrea -- Walter Bender Sugar Labs http://www.sugarlabs.org <http://www.sugarlabs.org> ___ IAEP -- It's An Education Project (not a laptop project!) But I think the need goes well beyond making a ruling. There is a good deal of investigation and mediation that is not typical of the responsibilities given to a jury. I think that the role of ombudsman (and/or membership on a Response Team) requires a level of maturity and experience that would be hard to guarantee in your proposed approach. > > Your thoughts? > > cheers > Hilary > > ---Original Message--- > Date: Sun, 5 Nov 2017 08:35:40 -0500 > From: Walter Bender > To: iaep , sugar-...@lists.sugarlabs.org > Subject: Re: [IAEP] Sugar Labs Community Response Team > > On Fri, Nov 3, 2017 at 4:31 PM, Laura Vargas > wrote: > > > [español abajo] > > > > Good day Sugar Labs members, > > > > As per today's meeting Bert Freudenbergs has declined his Ombudsman > > position on Sugar Labs. > > > > It has been discussed in today's meeting the possibility for Sugar Labs > to > > shape a RESPONSE TEAM composed at least 3 Sugar Labs members (Its has > > been suggested at least one female member). > > > > The objective of the RESPONSE TEAM will be to attend and resolve all Code > > of Conduct's requests for the Sugar Labs Community. > > > > > > Please share your comments and if you are interested in be take part of > > this new team. > > > > While I am in favor of trying to improve upon our ability as a community to > resolve differences, I have several concerns about the plan to form a > committee: > (1) It is not clear to me that a committee decision would hold any more > weight than the decision of a sole ombudsman. [IAEP] Sugar Digest 2017-10-27
1. Sugar Labs will be participating in Google Code-in again this year. Ignacio Rodriguez and I are the program administrators and are now gathering suggestions for bite-sized tasks in coding, documentation, research, design, and outreach. We'll also be scouring the open issues in the various Sugar-related repos for tasks. Please pass your suggestions out way. Also, if you are interested in mentoring, please contact me. Finally, it would great if you could help spread the word about the contest among educators so that we can reach out to as many potential participants as possible (the contest is open to 13-17 year olds). GCI is a great opportunity to recruit new talent into the community. Details out the contest are available at [1]. The Sugar Labs page describing out participation is at [2]. 2. There is a new release of Music Blocks available [3]. Features include a marked improvement in performance and lots of bug fixes. Tip of the hat to Devin Ulibarri, Edgar Quispe, and Euan Ong for their contributions to this release. 3. Congratulations to Lionel, Sameer, and Adam for being reelected to the Sugar Labs oversite board. (And thanks to everyone who voted for my return to the board as well.) Our next meeting is on 3 November at 19UTC in the #sugar-meeting channel of irc.freenode.net.
