most efficient method to determine "used cpu time" within a particular subtask

2011-07-11 Thread Dr. Stephen Fedtke
hi all,

several sources provide "used cpu time". calculating the difference between
two points of time allows to calculate the required cpu time for particular
parts of the processing.

question: which is the most efficient and reliable method to determine the
"cpu time used" in order to apply the above given delta calculation? is
there anything more efficient than call a service, such as

TIMEUSED CPU=MIC,STORADR=WORK_UCPU, *
  LINKAGE=SYSTEM

for example, reading out any control block fields.

my users list.

2011-07-11 Thread shai hess
HI,

I send message to the old and the new users list to indicate that
"YOU ARE IN MY LIST".

I receive many requests. Most of the people are in the list.

If somebody did not receive my note, please send me email and I will add you.

One point to mention. I used the word "without *** nothing was
possible". Some people complain and that is OK with me.
All I ask is that if somebody does not like my thanks to the one who
help me with this product and really without him one assembler line
could not be wrote, then this users list is not for you, because even
in my site the first few words is "without *** nothing was possible".

 Thanks,
 Shai

SR - was: Re: Don't like.

2011-07-11 Thread Barbara Nitz
>Maybe it's getting better. It now uses HTTP instead of insisting on HTTPS.
Really? After authentification (which *I* would insist on being https) it stays
https for me. Which makes a lot of sense, as we don't want our company's
software problems to become common knowledge.

>o I had the site bookmarked with my user ID in the query_string so it
> was preset on the login page; all I needed to type was my password.
Isn't that a preference set somewhere in the operating system? I never let the
OS 'help' me by remembering my userids. But you're probably not using windoofs,
either :-)

>o I'd like the composition window to use a monospaced font for times
> when I supply a code example, as earlier today. Perhaps I can profile

Why should the SR people listen to us? According to them, we're a minority that
only complains!

>o It's bandwidth-profligate: 100KB for a 10-line message payload? Sheesh!
Almost all of IBMs webpages are. Try accessing it on a 45kB line. You might as
well hit your head on a wall immediately! Takes in excess of 5 minutes (and so
it is doubly useless when you have to needlessly click yourself through several
pages before you reach the one you need), and believe me, a 100kB webpage does
NOT take 5 minutes to load. (When it is written by someone who knows what
they're doing.) I always have the impression that IBM is trying to spy on me
and hitting blank walls since I safeguard even my company PC.

As far as I am concerned, they have fixed one or two blatant errors, but they
close their collective ears and eyes to anything regarding usability
('intuitive usage'). Much better to 'educate' customers (as in - tell them
they're just too stupid to understand the grand scheme of their ideas - and do
it in such a way that the customer feels stupid and relents and uses it.)

With the exception of one or two points, *everything* I said back in March
still holds true. And if the rest of you don't start telling the SR people that
my points are valid, then we all will be stuck with an inferior product that
makes our life infinitely harder when we have a problem. At this point, they
consider me the lone dissenter.

Oh well, IBM most probably doesn't *want* customers to open problems. After
all, they don't have problems in their code, right? (All the usual, long-time
IBM suspects from this list excluded, of course!)

Sorry, Binyamin, but it's not true that every module LOAD goes through SAF:

(1) Loading of LPA-resident modules will not in general go through SAF, though
in some cases it will if for the first module LOADed as part of a new task.

(2) Loading of modules that reside in a UNIX file system don't go through SAF
in the same way, and are not really identifiable to the SAF exits involved with
UNIX, either.

I would consider that harmful. If you want consistency, then any macro
altering a register should issue a DROP.

There we almost agree; I would be satisfied with a generic statement

Sergio,

If I understand your requirements correctly, I believe that System REXX may
fulfill them.

System REXX members may be invoked (by the AXR address space) from any console
by specifying _rexxname (or F AXR,rexxname)
> _ is the command designator defined in PARMLIB member AXRnn

You can use the AXRCMD function (described in chapter 31 of the Authorized
Assembler Programming Guide) to submit MVS operator commands.

Cheers,

Sergio,

If I understand your requirements correctly, I believe that System REXX may
fulfill them.

System REXX members may be invoked (by the AXR address space) from any console
by specifying _rexxname (or F AXR,rexxname)
> _ is the command designator defined in PARMLIB member AXRnn
> rexxname is a member name in SYS1.SAXREXEC (or another dataset specified via

You can use the AXRCMD function (described in chapter 31 of the Authorized
Assembler Programming Guide) to submit MVS operator commands.

Cheers,
Alan

Re: Console COMMAND

2011-07-11 Thread Chris Mason
Sergio

> We have here a lot of EXEC's that is used from VM OPERATOR to display,
> activate, deactivate lines from VTAM.

Ed Gould has opened up the possibility that you might consider changing your
operational environment and changing the REXX Clists you use in order to
achieve what you really want to do.

The appropriate environment for managing automation - and hence obviously
entering REXX Clists with any sort of command not only VTAM commands - from the
IBM stable of products is NetView.

Indeed NetView in its original manifestation as NOSP in the late 1970s was
specifically designed for the entry of VTAM commands in order to assist with
complex and tedious sequences required to manage VTAM and NCP.

NOSP developed into NCCF and NCCF, being also an application-enabling
environment, developed into NetView together with a few of the applications so
enabled.[1]

It is still the NCCF component of NetView, rebranded as the "command facility",
which provides for the entry of commands.

But complementary to the entry of commands is the ability to analyse the
messages returned by the commands and act on them by entering further commands
and so on. This is a function which eventually this "command facility"
supported and then the choice - generally not a difficult choice - became
available to use REXX as a Clist language with all the same capabilities as the
specifically NCCF/NetView Clist language which was used before, a Clist
language based very approximately on VM EXEC.

It's this ability to analyse the results of having entered a command I wanted
to bring to your attention.

What I mentioned above was the possibility to handle messages *solicited* by
command entry. In addition it is possible to handle messages which have not
been *solicited* by command entry, *unsolicited* messages, by the agency of a
"message automation table".

I retained a presentation from back in 1991 of how I used to use these
functions in order to achieve totally "silent" IPLs of my test/education
systems, so "silent" that my colleagues insisted I set up a system of "what's
going on" messages to assure them that something was happening - but that's
another story.

> What We need, is execute this commands by operators under Master console of
> Z/OS.

I just checked this presentation in order to assure myself about the
customisation needed in order to ensure that the MVS system consoles were
available for entry of Clists which were to be executed in a NetView
environment.

> We don't mentioned before, that what want, is execute a REXX from MASTER
> Operator Console for ZOS.

Actually, you did!

> We need now, transfer this EXEC's for run under TSO.

So deciding that you needed to use TSO was already an assumption too far!

> We are migrating our environment from Z/VM, and Z/VSE to Z/OS.

Ideally, you would already be using NetView with z/VM. To think, just about my
first presentation activity in 1985 when I started teaching full-time was to
teach NCCF in a VM environment!

-

[1] And supposedly too difficult a job for the poor lambs of system programmers
to integrate - hence NetView with its "one size fits all" combination of
products! OK, I used to teach how to do it so they could have been taking away
my livelihood!

Announcement: Applications development for the web on z/OS

2011-07-11 Thread Steve Comstock

* OK'd by Darren

With HTML 5 getting near to becoming a standard, I
have updated my courses that relate to developing
Web applications on z/OS. These courses do not require
using any server other than the free HTTP servers that
come with z/OS; they do not require CICS.

Classic z/OS application developers (programmers using
COBOL, PL/I, Assembler, and C) can quickly learn how to
develop interesting, rich web pages to be served from
z/OS.

Some details:

"You and z/OS and the World Wide Web" - 5 days, includes:

 * Thorough introduction to HTML and XHTML
(based on HTML 4.1 and XHTML 1.0, with
 info on HTML 5 differences):

- Markup
- Links and anchors
- Style
- Lists
- Images and maps
- Applets
- Objects
- Multimedia (pdf, mov, swf)
- Forms and controls
- Cookies and hidden controls
- Tables
- Frames and framesets
- IFrames
- Page validation

 * Introduction to Cascading Style Sheets (CSS)

 * Introduction to ECMAScript (a.k.a. JavaScript)

 * The Document Object Model (DOM) and scripting

Pre-requisite: Introduction to z/OS UNIX - 3 days
or equivalent knowledge.

More details:

  http://www.trainersfriend.com/UNIX_and_Web_courses/u518descr.htm

 ===

Other updated courses:

Introduction to CGIs on z/OS - 1 day; see

  http://www.trainersfriend.com/UNIX_and_Web_courses/uc01descr.htm

Writing z/OS CGIs in COBOL - 2 days; see

  http://www.trainersfriend.com/UNIX_and_Web_courses/uc04descr.htm

Writing z/OS CGIs in Assembler - 2 days; see

  http://www.trainersfriend.com/UNIX_and_Web_courses/uc06descr.htm

Similar courses can be developed for PL/I, C, REXX, and
others, on request.

Again, it depends on what programmers are accustomed to. If,
magically overnight, the relevant DROP were added to every macro
in SYS1.MACLIB that alters a register, would it be an immediate
boon or a bane to the assembler programmer community?
I remain unconvinced.

If it were desirable, how about:

 USING 0,1,14,15 (Fewer, ad lib.)
 DROP 1,14,15

... ? Of course, if the caller has a bracketing PUSH/POP to encapsulate
a USING for another register, that POP willy-nilly restores the USING
for R1.

Two weeks left before the VM Workshop at OSU. The grid is now pretty much
complete. You can view it at _www.vmworkshop.org_
(http://www.vmworkshop.org) ..

General Sessions include:

John Franciscovich (IBM) will open the workshop with an update on the VM
Platform.

Bill Carico will be doing the keynote on Day 1. Bill has been a mainframe
advocate for more than 20 years and often presents as an IBM keynote
speaker at mainframe events.

Buzz Woeckener (Nationwide) is our kickoff speaker for Day 2. Buzz has
managed the Nationwide Linux and System z team to what is one of the
largest Linux on System z operations in the nation. Buzz has an excellent
understanding of the business case for Linux on System z and will describe
how
it changed the direction of IT at Nationwide.

Tom Befi (ISO). Tom manages Technology and Operations at ISO. Tom will
discuss ISO's experience and challenges with Linux on System z and ISO's
future plans for Linux on System z. This should be an excellent opportunity
for many of us to hear a Linux on System z success story; what worked at ISO
and what didn't.

You can see the rest of the grid on the workshop web site. There will be
a reception (dinner, et al) on Thursday evening and box lunches will be
provided on Thursday and Friday.

See you there.

I don't understand what you are looking for.

$DJOBCLASS(*),LONG
$DSRVCLASS(*),LONG
$TJOBCLASS(n),XEQCOUT=n

And all can be displayed and change with the SDSF JC command as you wrote.
XEQMEMBER
takes a JES2 command to change (unless that was added in z/OS 1.12)

$TJOBCLASS(n),XEQMEMBER(abc)=(MAXIMUM=n)

Isn't SDSF a utility?

No, but you do need to at least dynamically define the subsystem (SETSSI ADD)
if you did not already define it for the current IPL. You should also have your
library defined / activated in SMS prior to startup or you get some CBR*
error message IIRC. Another consideration might also be the HLQ
for your VOLCAT(s). The default is SYS1 but can be changed in the LOADxx

I looked. I find 30 macros in SYS1.MACLIB that issue USING. 5 of them
use PUSH/POP. A few of them leave the USING in effect when they end.

The problem that occurs because of the lack of PUSH/POP is an assembly
error. IMO this is far better than the result if the USING remains in effect
but the register contents have changed.

I remain unconvinced that PUSH/POP is appropriate when the register
contents are not restored. I might go so far as to contend that whenever
a macro alters registers 1, 14 or 15 it should issue a DROP for those
registers if there is an active USING. Unfortunately, AFAIK, there is no

Re: ENQ/DEQ for CICS Transaction ID - now for Shared Resource

2011-07-11 Thread Staller, Allan
IIRC, this would be a bad thing for CICS.

CICS does not like OS waits which would be caused by ENQ/DEQ (CICS waits
are another thing).

I am not a CICS person, but I would think that there are EXEC CICS
equivalents to ENQ/DEQ that would be
better for this purpose.

Now we are trying the approach of a shared resource ENQ/DEQ. We will
test two transactions
calling a transaction that ENQ's a resource. This SHOULD cause the one
transaction to wait
until the other is DEQ'd.

I'm not too CICS savvy, but how do you define a small field that is
shared between transactions
(does anyone have an example), and do you refer to that field in the ENQ
by name and length
(again, an example would be most helpful)?

Gadi -

In JES2 it is always a command whether there is an panel interface with it or
not.

So, the question I have is - what specifically are your needs? Operations, end
user, audit process and control? Automation?
For example, with OPS/MVS you could devise a process. Or if you use Tivoli,
then it may already be built-in.

It would help to know your requirements for such an interface.

Currently SDSF has a panel. Perhaps that is not what your needs require?

Subject: This forum is to help people with MVS or z/OS questions and problems

Hi Folks,

We must not forget what this wonderful forum is for. It is for
bringing up problems in the MVS (z/OS) area, and solving them. It is
for people putting their heads together and making the sum as being
(far) more than the individual parts. It is for cooperation. And it is
for PROGRESS.

Any tools that help solve problems for us, are fair game to mention
in this forum. Sometimes the solution to a problem is a free tool (or
once in a while, a "pay" tool). (It just takes care of the problem, and
the problem goes away.) We have many of these tools on the CBT Tape,
and therefore we can help solve many people's problems. IBM doesn't
have programming time to invent every tool--nor would we want them to.
They have done enough by supporting the operating system and by buying
out a lot of vendors. Individual initiative should have its fair place,
too, and we certainly want the right to write our own tools the way we
want them to be. So all of that is fine to talk about here--IBM's stuff
OR OURS.

In my own travels, I've (occasionally) come across individuals
whose experiences, or position, induced them to prejudice themselves
against me in my workplace. Later on, when they were at another job (no
longer in the same workplace as me), they woke up and realized that we
are doing a public service with our tools, and that they (in their new
position) need the tools just as much as they did when they worked
together with me in the same shop. THEN, they became appreciative and
helpful, the same as everyone else. People in certain positions, aren't
objective. But when you remove them from there, they wake up and ARE
objective and appreciative.

I think I understand (partially) our particular complainer. He
mentioned once, that in his shop, he was given the task of standardizing
the shop and getting rid of all kinds of junk that consultants had
installed there and left there. In a large shop, this can be a big
problem. This junk can (understandably) sometimes get in the way of a
later IBM release of a component. One zapped or old module,
concatenated in a library (somehow) ahead of the latest IBM versions of
that module, can cause problems and abends which will interfere with the
production work that is the shop's bread and butter. So, given this
task, he had to fill his brain for an extended period of time with the
obsession of getting rid of non-standard modules and component parts and
(unfortunately) extra tools in that system. He wound up developing a
mindset that anything non-standard had to be gotten rid of. It seems
that this mindset has stayed with him, hence the origin of some of his
complaints.

We need to establish a balance between a standard, working, and
stable system, and also the extra tools that we all need. Once the junk
has been cleaned out, and the system has been put in order, one doesn't
need to be obsessive any more. At that point, extra tools are OK,
because the situation has been brought under control.

We all know that every individual has a different point of view.
Those of us who have been around (most of us), have seen quite a few
different points of view, and different approaches in the MVS
sysprogging environment.

But all this can be put to our advantage. Nobody is in the same
position, exactly. Nobody has the same job (or talents) as anybody
else, exactly. Each of us can share the solutions to his or her
problems with the rest of us, who have had to spend our time on other
things. So when there is diversity, which there always is, and we share
our experiences, AND WE COOPERATE, then we all gain. This is an
absolute truth.

That is really what this forum is all about. (At least it is my
view of it.)

All the best of everything to all of you.

Sincerely, Sam Golob

P.S. Shai, you don't have to fight at all. We'll do all the
negotiating for you. Just keep on producing your wonderful product and
keep on talking about it. I don't know of anything else that anyone has
written (for a reasonable price at least)--anything that covers the same
ground as your wonderful product does. You just keep on working, keep
on posting, and nobody had better start up with you, OR
ELSE*@#$%&^&$%#@***

Re: Console COMMAND

2011-07-11 Thread Brian Westerman
Sorry, I think I messed up my last entry.

Any way, you should be able to convert your code to SYSREXX (System REXX).

Also, I hate to bring it up because of the controversy about marketing, but we
have automation products (SyzCMD/z and SyzMPF/z) which provide the type of
automation you are looking for. They are extremely inexpensive and there is a
good discount for IBM-MAIN and SHARE members, and better yet, are completely
supported, we just successfully tested all of our code under z/OS 1.13.

You can execute your exec as part of our product (it allows you to execute
REXX), but chances are that the internal commands will probably do the job as
well or better.

Again, I hate to bring up the marketing stuff, but in this case it applies
quite well if you are not interested in the System REXX approach.

Managing WLM manged initiators

Hi,

We’ve started using WLM managed initiators.

Using JES2 commands we can specify the maximum number of initiators per class,
and even per system.
The number of jobs per system is visible and changeable using the JC command.
Does anyone know of a utility that can display and change the values per system?

Thanks

http://publibz.boulder.ibm.com/cgi-bin/bookmgr_OS390/BOOKS/dgt2o361/5.3

HOWEVER - OAM must be defined as a subsystem in the IEFSSNnn member of
PARMLIB before you can do it. So, most likely, you need up update
IEFSSNnn (and possibly create an IGDSMSnn PARMLIB member), then IPL.
http://publibz.boulder.ibm.com/cgi-bin/bookmgr_OS390/BOOKS/dgt2i660/4.7.1

Another possibility is the SETSSI command:

http://publibz.boulder.ibm.com/cgi-bin/bookmgr_OS390/BOOKS/IEA2G1B2/4.50

SETSSI ADD,SUB=OAM,I=IGDSSIIN,P='ID=??'

Where ID=?? specifies the IGDSMS?? member of PARMLIB. SMS doesn't seems
to support the SETSSI command.

JDBC type 2 with java6

2011-07-11 Thread Matan Cohen
Hi,
please excuse me for any lack of knowledge in this area,

I have a compenet running under USS which used the JDBC jars from DB2 8.10V
.
I needed to upgrade it to run under J6.0

*/Z110/usr/lpp/java/J6.0/bin: >./java -version   *
*java version "1.6.0"
 *
*Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build pmz3160-20071123_01)
*
*IBM J9 VM (build 2.4, J2RE 1.6.0 IBM J9 2.4 z/OS s390-31
jvmmz3160-20071121_1501*
*5 (JIT enabled)
*
*J9VM - 20071121_015015_bHdSMr
*
*JIT - r9_20071121_1330
*
*GC - 20071031_AA)
*
*JCL - 20071118_01 *

when starting the compenet with Java 6 i get this error :
com.ibm.db2.jcc.b.SqlException: ÝDB2/T2zOS¨ÝJDBC/SQLJ¨ Incompatable JVM. The
Dri
ver REQUIRES Java 2 support and is not compatible with the JVM:1.6.0

from DB2 literature :
*"**JDBC/SQLJ Driver for OS/390 and z/OS (deprecated)*
*

The JDBC/SQLJ Driver for OS/390® and z/OS is a type 2 driver that contains
most of the functions that are described in the JDBC 1.2 specification. This
driver also includes some of the functions that are described in the JDBC
2.0 specification.

The JDBC/SQLJ 2.0 Driver for OS/390 and z/OS supports these functions:

   - Global transactions that run under WebSphere Application Server Version
   4.0 and above
   - Implementation of Java user-defined functions and stored procedures
   - SQLJ statements that perform equivalent functions to all JDBC methods
   - Connection pooling

To use this driver, you need Java 2 Technology Edition, SDK 1.3 or later. To
implement Java stored procedures or user-defined functions, you need Java 2
Technology Edition, SDK 1.3.1, SDK 1.4.1 or later."
*
I wonder if this is one of the reason it is label as depracated ?

smf14 and ds cache read

2011-07-11 Thread Monika Amiss
Hello group,

is it possible to determine with SMF-Records (14,41,42,..) if a
dataset-block was read from disk, lla (direcotory read), vlf (modules), or
PDS/E-caching. We want to optimize our I/O processing.
Any hint appreciated. With best regards
Monika
