If so, then what you really need is: cd /u/agttxfr/catalog exactly that. By putting the operand to the "cd" command in quotes, you said "This is an MVS dataset name". Of course there is not dataset name called 'U/AGTTXFR/CATALOG' because that is not valid. The MVS ftp server switched between MVS and HFS by looking at the first character of the operand. If the first character is a ', then the ftp server switches to MVS datasets. If the first character is a /, then the ftp server switches to HFS files. If it is neither, then the ftp server stays in either MVS or HFS mode and just changes the MVS qualifier level, or subdirectory. dir / will always show the root directory. dir with no operand shows the current directory if in HFS mode, or the datasets catalog to the current MVS qualifer level if in MVS mode. In my test dir \ showed the same as the plain "dir" command. "ls" and "dir" are basically synonyms in the ftp server world. -- John McKown Senior Systems Programmer HealthMarkets Keeping the Promise of Affordable Coverage Administrative Services Group Information Technology The information contained in this e-mail message may be privileged and/or confidential. Re: FTP-Client(PC)/Server(M/F)
STARTDIRECTORY works just fine...problem is users that normally work with MVS datasets/files..PDS's..now have to be specific of there names they enter.. Example...WS-FTP client..If default was MVS and all I enter is HLQ all datasets..PDS's..display..I can select the dataset(MVS) if a PDS and then the members will list.. Can not do that if default of STARTDIRECTORY is HFS...I have to enter the fully Quilified name of the dataset before I get the member list.. SOSTARTDIRECTORY works but defaulting to HFS for all will mess up others.. In the config file referenced by the SYSFTPD card in your FTP proc, you will have a STARTDIRECTORY entry which either set to MVS (for a MVS- dataset home for the user) or HFS (for a z/OS Unix home for the user). On a z/OS system, whether you are client or server, you change directory to MVS datasets by surrounding your destination in tick marks: cd 'MY.MVS.DATASET' or cd 'MY.MVS.PDS' If you want to change directory to a z/OS Unix location, remove the tick marks: cd /some/directory/ Aaron -- For IBM-MAIN subscribe / signoff / archive access instructions, send email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the message: GET IBM-MAIN INFO Search the archives at http://bama.ua.edu/archives/ibm-main.html

In this case, "/" is not the global root, but is the base of the chroot()'ed subdirectory. -- John McKown Senior Systems Programmer HealthMarkets Keeping the Promise of Affordable Coverage Administrative Services Group Information Technology The information contained in this e-mail message may be privileged and/or confidential. Ron, "dir /" will ALWAYS show system root filesystem; that's a unix standard. There are several ftp clients - even for free - that do allows you to setup local and remote homes and run commands after startup. Another way is to use -s:file flag with windows command line ftp. The downside of this approach is that first 2 lines of the file must be the userid and password.
