OMVS ROOT

2006-03-24 Thread ahmed sallam
Hello

i have questions, if u would answer:

The root file system is so large . the HFS has extended beyond the size10656000
1k blocks...it is a multifile extended to 9 volumes.

i want to reduced it..so i will use PAX with option M so that will not copy
data
from other data sets mounted at directries.only (omvs.root) which is mounted on
(/) to be copied

our system is ZOS V1R4.PAX -M is valid with V1R7so what is the
equivalent
in V1R4

Thank You,

Ahmed

I use a mod-27 for my sysres, so yes, my Serverpac supplied filesystems
are on the sysres, and they have the SYSRES VOLSER in the dataset name.

Mine is on a separate volume. All the UNIX filesystem container datasets are.
Our internal naming convention is:

OMVS.&SYSRS1..&SYSNAME.rest.of.the.dsn

They are catalogued in CATALOG.ICF.V&SYSCAT..OMVS using OMVS.&SYSRS1 as the two
level qualifier.

Same as most of the other responses. SYSRES (set) with the volser as
part of the data set name. There is a certain number of target sets for
cloning in each sysplex that get rotated. All the zFS (formerly HFS)
files associated with the z/OS target zone are part of the sysres
set, not just the root. The exception is several Java versions because I
prefer not to maintain them with SMP/E (because I see zero benefit), but
if I did, they would be part of the same zones so the maintenance version
that gets cloned lives with the other "sysres" maintenance zFS files.

Not using zFS for Root.

Using zFS for user and product file systems.

Root file systems for my 3 LPARs all z/OS 1.10

For KMC1 LPAR - HFS.ZOS0110.KMC1.ROOT renamed and directed during
ServerPac install to Master Catalog/IODF/SMPE volume.
For CPAC LPAR - HFS.ZOS0110.CPAC.ROOT on SYSRES volume one pack system.
For KMFC LPAR - HFS.ZOS0110.KMFC.ROOT on a library volume.

HFS is alias to user catalog in master catalog.

I copy all SMP/E maintained using ADRDSSU to datasets named like
OMVS.WSUMVS1.ZOS111.ROOT.RSU1005

ROOT FILESYSTEM('OMVS.&LPARNAME..&ZOSLVL..ROOT.&RSULEVL')
  TYPE(ZFS) MODE(READ)

When I clone an maintenance level. These days, I never IPL from the
SMP/E Targets, I copy the resvol (mod9) and the 4 volumes worth of zfs
(mod3).

We bear some elements with other posters thus far, but we definitely have
our own rhythm...

We configure the ServerPac jobs to drop the IBM-supplied HFS' on a
secondary logical SYSRES (&SYSR2). Dataset names are of the form:

SYS1.OMVS.&SYSR1..whatever (ROOT, JAVA, XML, MQS, etc.)

Dataset names use &SYSR1 instead of &SYSR2 to match our SMP/E CSI &
Zone naming conventions. None of these are ZFS, none are SMS-managed.
We use FDR for physcial copy of the &SYSR1/&SYSR2 volumes (SADUMP is on
&SYSR2), then RENAME the newly copied HFS'.

Because we don't yet share MCAT (sigh), SYS1.OMVS is an MLA to reduce the
amount of catalog work we have to do for changes to ServerPac content.

Sysplex root is a separate HFS on isolated DASD (mod-1), also SYS1.OMVS,
also NOT SMS managed. User, application, and ISV product filesystems are
typically SMS managed and ZFS.

We set VERSION to &SYSR1 in BPXPRMxx, and we use automount to manage
our multiple maintenance HFS' to keep in sync with our SYSRES / Zones:

auto.master:
...
/service/whatever /etc/service_whatever.map
...
service_whatever.map:
...
filesystem SYS1.OMVS..ROOT
...

And, in SMP/E our DDDEFs for HFS elements are prefixed with:

/service/whatever/&SYSR1./
