Re: Comparison of TN3270 Clients

2006-11-02 Thread R.S.

I like Nexus.
It is one of very few emulators which properly support polish codepage.
Avg response time is 2-4 days. Including "improvements wishes", like
more macro buttons or cursor shape.

Oh, it is the *fastest* emulator I know.
And probably one of the smallest (approx. 1,5MB).

At times, were it not for bad luck, I'd have no luck at all.

Not only that, it is the only emulator I know on which the default
configuration not only works out-of-the-box, but also corresponds to how I
want to use it. Shows that this is a product written by someone who
understands what the needs of the actual worker are.
Agreed. Tom, in his other life, is a mainframe programmer, so he set
the defaults to the way that people who grew up on dumb 3270 terminals
want.

Like when Shugart Corporation told Al Shugart he couldn't use the

FWIW I just tried running Vista under WINE (0.9.24). It installs almost
without a hitch, and seems to run -- I connected to a host, signed on
and off again. But resizing the emulator window makes a mess. Likely
WINE's problem and not Tom's, but it means I'll have to stick with the
old tried-and-true x3270.

(By the way, does anybody else find Microsoft's use of the word "Vista"
confusingly similar to Tom's product name?)

Actually a certain judge in the North West USofA was ready to keel-haul
Micro$**t over Windows. It was found that Windows is a GENERIC name and
so it can't be perfected for a trademark.

A certain company, Lindows, got shoved into an out of court settlement
(in my opinion because of M/S filing nusance suits in the Netherlands
and other places) so that M/S would not be seen to not own Windows after
all.

So a problem with Vista? Nah, that could never be the case as
M/S has all those lawyers to make sure that they don't infringe...

I use VISTA when working from home. At "the office" we adopted Bluezone
(Seagull Software) as the "company standard" 3270 emulator.

Dave Alcock has a web page (http://www.planetmvs.com/tn3270/index.html)
that lists almost every tn3270 emulator. No comparisons, but at least you
will find out what is out there. We use Vista tn3270 from Tom Brennan (MVS

product.
