Hi Peter, We use CA-PanValet. It offers check out, check in version control, backup process that includes version control, utilties that produce the "what is called by what" reports and the "what is included in what" reports. We use separate Pan libraries for source and for production control. HTH, Linda - Original Message - From: "Peter x23353 Farley" To: IBM-MAIN@bama.ua.edu Sent: Monday, February 6, 2012 9:23:02 AM Subject: Simple iinventory control products? Hi All, I am being asked if there are relatively simple source-and-JCL inventory control products available for z/OS. I found one myself (XREF product at dcmsi.com), but management wants to know if any other software vendors provide such a product. We're not interested at the moment in full life cycle management products like Endeavor or ChangeMan. We just need a simple inventory control product that could answer interactive queries (E.G., What JCL uses this file? Where is this program used?) by programmers and technical support staff. TIA for any product or company names or links you can provide. Re: Simple iinventory control products?
Thanks Linda. Unfortunately that would involve loading all of our source and JCL, etc. libraries over to Panvalet libraries. Currently we're just looking for something to read what we have and inventory it separately, without any conversions. Unless the Panvalet product has been enhanced beyond what I once knew about it (which is entirely possible), it does not (or did not) provide interactive queries of the "what is included in what" type, only static batch reports. Thanks again for the suggestion though. Re: Simple iinventory control products?
Regarding John's email below, JCLScan (actually, Job/Scan) is a JCL scanner that makes it possible to check for the most basic JCL errors. Info/X is a tool ASG acquired, as is Job/Scan, from another vendor (and from what I understand, is no longer supported by the original developer). It would be important to ensure that the capability to go anywhere from program source objects COMPLETELY through to batch scheduler nets is a feature you will eventually need. And, with that capability, you can then search from anywhere for anything that is used within your I.T. environment. Re: Simple iinventory control products?
Rational Asset Analyzer for z/OS is quite excellent: http://www.ibm.com/software/rational/products/raa/systemz/ I think you were asking about more than just JCL inspection. RAA does that but also much more. There's a trial of RAA available so you can take it for a spin. Just click on the "Trial" link from the above Web page. If you're in a particular hurry, take a look at the step-by-step illustrated RAA trial guide here (watch the wrap): http://public.dhe.ibm.com/software/dw/rational/emz/Using_Rational_Asset_Analyzer_to_Inventory_and_Analyze_your_zOS_applications.pdf Somewhat relatedly (but just beyond your specific question) there are tools that can inspect and inventory your software products, release levels, etc. Tivoli Asset Discovery for z/OS is an excellent example: http://www.ibm.com/software/tivoli/products/asset-discovery-zos/ Also somewhat relatedly if your major concern is application deployment -- and making sure all the pieces, parts, and configurations are correct and complete every time -- then you might consider a tool that's directly focused on deployment. As an example, for CICS that list would include CICS Configuration Manager, CICS Deployment Assistant, and/or CICS Explorer. The last one is available to all CICS Transaction Server customers at no additional charge. Do note that every z/OS customer receives the base IBM Software Configuration and Library Manager (SCLM) as part of z/OS at no additional charge. More information here: http://www.ibm.com/software/awdtools/sclmsuite/sclm/ There are some optional add-ons to base SCLM if desired. Hope that helps. Mackinney have something called OSXREFS. *OSXREFS consists of 4 utility programs* *OSXDSN*, *OSXLINKS*, *OSXSCAN* and *OSXPROC* provide the following functions: - Cross-reference datasets and PROCEDURES in a specified JCLLIB/PROCLIB - Cross-reference Programs and PROCEDURES that execute them - Cross-references strings found in PDS members - Cross-reference JCL Procedures and executed Programs I haven't used it myself, but I expect that as with all Mackinney products, the price will be right and support will be good. Re: Simple iinventory control products?
Peter: I have had the "opportunity" in the past to support at least one of the McKinney products (LISTCAT ??). Essentially all it did was to take the outout (sysprint) from IDCAMS and produce a much smaller report. It was a COBOL program. One day I got a call from the production people about an OC4 (in LISTCAT) . I looked at it a little and since it was a vendor program I called up their "support" line. AFter a few minutes on the phone I got a not to nice of a response: "DEBUG it yourself" Now I know the product cost very little but I expected a little more than that. I was not going to spend a half hour trying to debug their code. I decided to write a REXX exec to do the same thing. It took me all of 20 minutes to write it and 30 minutes to test it. Since it was a who cares output and to make the production people happy I ran it and gave them the output and I ran it passed the programmer. He & they were happy and we put it in production and its been working for over 20 years (no bugs). I asked why we bought it and could never trace it back to the orderer. The next OS release I deleted it and made sure that we never paid them a penny for the product). I went out of my way to steer the company away from any Mckinney products after that. I think over the 20 years it was mentioned once. Yes they are cheap but then you get what you pay for source and thats it. I have gotten better support out of the CBTTAPE . Sorry I would suggest you think long and hard about any of their "stuff" (I refuse to call them programs as one has to have support to be called a product in my opinion). Ed et al, My own experience with MacKinney was significantly different. Two years ago, we were looking at migrating our CICS apps to Micro Focus COBOL. But we are very dependent on a MacKinney product called EZHELP. For many months we worked with MacKinney to port the EZHELP source code from ASM to Micro Focus COBOL! A colleague here at DHS did most of the work with a little help from myself. Throughout this process we received excellent support from Wendell at MacKinney. It was painful, but in the end we succeeded in completing the port. Unfortunately, the migration of the rest of our apps failed since Micro Focus could not handle other aspects of our application. So I only have positive things to report about this company. John -- For IBM-MAIN subscribe / signoff / archive access instructions, send email to lists...@bama.ua.edu with the message: INFO IBM-MAIN
Re: Simple iinventory control products?
After a few minutes of what on the phone? Calling them morons? Questioning their ancestry? MacKinney support gets you speaking to a developer far faster most other vendors I've contacted. Those developers may come across as somewhat defensive of their products (most everyone tends to believe they have debugged their code thoroughly) but I've had many occasions to call for support and have never been advised to "debug it yourself." I think we have 5 MacKinney products in house, including LISTCAT PLUS - which has never abended 0C4 here... FWIW. Greg Shirey Ben E. Re: Simple iinventory control products?
As I said earlier I have no experience of OSXREFS or LISTCAT for that matter but we do have 2 Mackinney products installed, VTAM Switch and TRACK. We have used them now for many years and whenever we have needed it (which has not been very often) the support has been excellent. Their support teams have also always been very responsive when asked to implement additional funtionality, much more so than most other software companies I have dealt with in the past. Greg: I am surprised a little bit by your attitude and am disappointed in your suggestion. I wasn't going to mention it but since you seemed to infer I wasn't professional I will add: Another person in the group I was in had a similar issue with them. The person was happy he didn't have to call as he had gotten a blank wall from McKinney as well. I don't recall the product and I am not about to insult you with suggestion about being a paid lacky for Mckinney. I have never heard anything positive about them. In the last say 20 years I guess the negatives outweigh anything. I never thought highly of the company as their postage card return to order their product was a little bit less than professional in my opinion. Yes they are a cheap software company and I will repeat you get what you pay for. Ed On Feb 9, 2012, at 10:27 AM, Greg Shirey wrote: After a few minutes of what on the phone? Calling them morons? Re: Simple iinventory control products?
I'll have to speak up. We have a number of MacKinney products. We only had one problem with one of them, about 15 years ago. I worked on that with them and we fixed it together. It was a race condition in a CICS product. I won't try to say that the products are the top of the line. But they work __for us__. And we can afford them. We've had to terminate a number of products in the past 3 years due to the high, to us, cost. Of course, we are a small shop (and shrinking), and so not a prime customer of companies like IBM, CA, or LRS. We've also eliminated products on the other platforms as well. I will say that IT management wants to eliminate z/OS entirely (along with Linux, AIX, and Oracle/Sun). They want a MS mono-culture because they are 100% convinced that is the most cost effective for our size shop. I don't have access to the budget numbers, so I can't tell. Higher level management cares only about cost (and Windows up-time is "good enough". Going for months without an IPL (reboot) means nothing to them. The occasional Windows server crash is consider "just how things are".) Actually, Windows itself rarely crashes. It's usually the main server application. Greetings All, We had CICS for 12-15 years, and along with it several MacKinney products - Hot Print, Morning News and KwikKey. We don't have CICS anymore, and our MacKinney products are gone now too. The products worked well, and we did not have any support problems with MacKinney. Really? Never heard anything positive? Ever read any of the messages that come from this list? I've searched the archives and found only messages regarding MacKinney that are either positive or neutral. The only negative comments I can find are from you. I won't argue whether the circumstances you describe actually happened or not, but if the experiences of others who post to this list have any value to you (I'm sure mine don't but others might), you could consider that it was an anomaly.
