I cannot give a complete answer, but I would think that the first step is to
convert the IOCP statements into a separate IODF:

+--- Migrate Configuration Data +
|
 |
|
 |
| Select one of the following tasks. |
|
|
| __ 1. Migrate IOCP/OS data |
| 2. *Migrate switch configuration data |
|
   |
| * = requires TSA I/O Operations |
|
   |
|
   |
|
  |
+--+

The second step would be to merge the IODFs. For years we maintained two
separate IODFs for our two data centers. Eventually they were combined (by
someone else) into one. Worst case would be to manually define the smaller of
the two into the larger one. I suspect that merging must be a largely manual
process anyway because HCD (or HCM) would have no way to resolve conflicts.

Well, this is at once suddenly simpler and more complicated. First off,
PARMLIB content cannot matter because we're talking about early IPL. During
NIP OS doesn't even know where PARMLIB is located, let alone CONSOLxx
contents.

It turns out that we've seen this problem before but did not recognize it
this time. After putting the console chpids back online, we got IPLed in the
usual way except for this message for each of three different chpids:

IOS125I CHPID xx IS EXPERIENCING MULTIPLE I/O TIMEOUTS CAUSING PROLONGED
INITIALIZATION.

Each of the three chpids connects a large number of Oracle/STK virtual tape
units. It appears that some or all of these devices are non-responsive
during IPL, causing MIH waits. So we configured the three tape chpids
offline and IPLed again. This time (with console chpids back offline) we got
NIP messages immediately on OpSysMsg screen.

We're left with this puzzle. With console chpids online and tape chpids also
online, we still got NIP messages pretty quickly. But with console chpids
offline, delay was so bad we thought NIP messages were lost in outer space.

So we more or less understand the tape chpid problem. We do not understand
the difference in behavior with and without MCS consoles available. That is,
after putting tape chpids offline, NIP messages went immediately to HMC.

We have opened a PMR with IBM.

We've discussed on this List configuring no NIP console device and using HMC
instead. I'm testing that practice for the future by configuring off the two
chpids that support all MCS/NIP consoles for one LPAR. I have done that in
the past when actual NIP device(s) would not work. NIP messages showed up on
Operating System Messages and all was fine.

Now however we are getting no NIP messages at all. Three HMCs each with an
integrated 3270 at z/OS 2.1. We expected NIP messages on either the 3270 or
on traditional Op Sys Msg. Nada. Has anyone with a NIPless configuration
reached 2.1? Any special considerations?

Re: IPLing z/OS 2.1+ with no NIP console

2016-07-25 Thread Jesse 1 Robinson
Well, this is at once suddenly simpler and more complicated. First off, PARMLIB
content cannot matter because we're talking about early IPL. During NIP OS
doesn't even know where PARMLIB is located, let alone CONSOLxx contents.

It turns out that we've seen this problem before but did not recognize it this
time. After putting the console chpids back online, we got IPLed in the usual
way except for this message for each of three different chpids:

IOS125I CHPID xx IS EXPERIENCING MULTIPLE I/O TIMEOUTS CAUSING PROLONGED
INITIALIZATION.

Each of the three chpids connects a large number of Oracle/STK virtual tape
units. It appears that some or all of these devices are non-responsive during
IPL, causing MIH waits. So we configured the three tape chpids offline and
IPLed again. This time (with console chpids back offline) we got NIP messages
immediately on OpSysMsg screen.

We're left with this puzzle. With console chpids online and tape chpids also
online, we still got NIP messages pretty quickly. But with console chpids
offline, delay was so bad we thought NIP messages were lost in outer space.

So we more or less understand the tape chpid problem. We do not understand the
difference in behavior with and without MCS consoles available. That is, after
putting tape chpids offline, NIP messages went immediately to HMC.

We have opened a PMR with IBM.

It's worse than that. One may safely use those characters that are called
in manuals Alphabetic, Numeric, or Special. They're enumerated. all others
are considered Invalid. Alphabetic does *not* include lower case. The
motivation: there are some terminals that support those three classes then
dedicate other code points, particularly Latin lower case to Katakana, Cyrillic,
or ...

To accommodate this, our products which have mixed-case message templates
have a switch selecting whether message texts should be translated to upper
case for display.

DFSORT is quite eclectic. It allows specification independently of
code page and collating sequence, for example En_GB.UTF-8. I
don't know whether it will infer the code page from the UNIX file
tag. But the collating sequence for En_US seems badly broken.
I need to renew an old PMR concerning that.

codepage restrictions on IBM applications

2016-07-25 Thread Janet Graff
I understand that IBM left it up to the product owners to decide what NLS
support meant to their products.

Can anyone give me information on how codepages are supported by some of the
more popular products ( like DB2, IMS, CICS)?

Since WTO is restricted to CP-37 displayable EBCDIC characters this means that
the system console messages, and the job log messages are restricted to
readable EBCDIC characters. That codepage does define accented and non-English
characters so this would mean that some of these products could issue latin
codepage messages that were non-English.

Can anyone confirm that they do that? If configured properly, will
DB2/IMS/CICS issue non-English messages to the console or job logs?

In the local output files (non-console or job log) for the products do they go
beyond CP-37? Do they have output in non-latin codepages? Might they contain
DBCS?

Re: SMP/E packaging question

2016-07-25 Thread Longabaugh, Robert E
What is the format of your JCLIN? Binder or IEBCOPY? The answer to that will
determine the need for a relfile to contain the module you have to provide to
get the new JCLIN to take effect.

FILES(n) on the ++PTF statement means how many external files that SMP/E will
need. For PTFs, this should be zero. JCLIN can be inline in the sysmod. It
does not have to be in a relfile. If the JCLIN is inline, then you code
"++JCLIN" instead of "++JCLIN RELFILE(n)". If you have no relfiles, then there
is no FILES(n) on the ++PTF.

Files() counts all the RELFILEs including JCLIN. If you code FILES(0) it
causes a syntax error -- you must entirely omit FILES(). (Grrr... Why?
It's a PITA when generating MCS with a program.)

If your PTF contains only JCLIN, APPLY will receive RC4, and as mentioned
earlier, no modules will be relinked. (Grrr PITA; worth RFE someday.)

Why deliver a PTF in RELFILE format rather than inline? It proliferates TLIBs
and inflates the catalog.

Thanks, I looked up WTO and for the TEXT parameter it says "only standard

Not quite at the codepage level but good enough for me.

There are examples of how to package a PTF with JCLIN in the SMP/E Reference
under JCLIN. Have you looked at them?

Re: SMP/E packaging question

2016-07-25 Thread Way, Richard
Or am I misunderstanding it even more basically, and my example will work, but
with FILES(1)? In other words, does the file count specifically exclude the
JCLIN? Or does it only exclude the JCLIN when the JCLIN is inline as opposed to
coming from a RELFILE?

Sorry for the basic questions.

Thanks, Bob. I should have mentioned that we have customers run a separate link
job anyway after the RECEIVE/APPLY/ACCEPT. I think we'd just have to ask them
to rerun this external link job. This was sounding simple, since I thought we
could do something like this:

++PTF(xx) FILES(0)
++VER (Z038) FMID()
++JCLIN   RELFILE(1)

But is FILES(0) even acceptable if one ONLY wants to change the JCLIN?
Apparently NOT, according to the reference guide at least (1-).

It sounds like I do have to include something else - even if it's not an object
module. Dang.

To get SMP/E to relink the load module, which would be the trigger for adding
the alias, you would have to provide one or more of the modules (defined by
++MOD) that are contained in the load module.

If you update the JCLIN without providing any elements, SMP/E does not relink
the module at that time, but it does update the definition for the next time
the load module does need to be relinked. This information is available in the
SMP/E Reference Guide under ++JCLIN.

Case a) - statements are "compatible" - simply merge text files. This is
very unlikely.

Case b) - you have to rename chpids, CU's, devices. In that case you
should interprete statements and rere-enetr it using new numbering
schema. In other words, there is no simple solution, not requiring man work.

Re: HCD Question

2016-07-25 Thread Jesse 1 Robinson
I cannot give a complete answer, but I would think that the first step is to
convert the IOCP statements into a separate IODF:

+--- Migrate Configuration Data +
|
 |
|
 |
| Select one of the following tasks. |
|
|
| __ 1. Migrate IOCP/OS data |
| 2. *Migrate switch configuration data |
|
   |
| * = requires TSA I/O Operations |
|
   |
|
   |
|
  |
+--+

The second step would be to merge the IODFs. For years we maintained two
separate IODFs for our two data centers. Eventually they were combined (by
someone else) into one. Worst case would be to manually define the smaller of
the two into the larger one. I suspect that merging must be a largely manual
process anyway because HCD (or HCM) would have no way to resolve conflicts.

I used to fly around the Caribbean back in the 70-80’s quite a bit.
It was not uncommon that they would weigh the passengers (as well as the
luggage) before take off.
Its been a while but one stop was at a airport that was a top of a mountain
(yes a real mountain) Both take off and landing was an experience I will never

Just can’t remember the island St Nevis??? all I know is that the wouldn’t

DFSORT DYNALLOC/DYNAPCT question

2016-07-25 Thread Vernooij, CP (ITOPT1) - KLM
Hello DFSORT experts,

The DYNALLOC description says that the default number of SORTWKs is 4 and not
to specify an unnecessary high number.
The DYNAPCT parameter allocates an extra number of SORTWKs to be used in case
the DYNALLOC number of SORTWKs appears to be not enough.

I can:

a. raise the DYNALLOC default to 6 SORTWKs

b. set the DYNAPCT value to 50
In each case 6 SORTWKs are allocated. What is the difference and what is
advisable?

Kees.
