Re: how to IPL z/OS by JCL

2022-04-05 Thread Steve Horein
SA provides ProcOps functionality that includes ISQSEND for remotely
issuing traditional MVS commands to gracefully shutdown business
applications and infrastructure services, as well as ISQCCMD for more of
the hardware management side like ACTIVATE, SYSRESET, and/or LOAD.

https://www.ibm.com/docs/en/z-system-automation/4.2.0?topic=commands-isqsend
https://www.ibm.com/docs/en/z-system-automation/4.2.0?topic=commands-isqccmd
https://www.ibm.com/docs/en/z-system-automation/4.2.0?topic=commands-common

It is possible to initiate shutdown, automate "remote" ISQ900I messages to
manage final system "housekeeping", and turn right around and perform
whatever hardware actions you need like SYSRESET/LOAD or
SYSRESET/DEACTIVATE or ACTIVATE/LOAD the system on a different LPAR if
exercising DR procedures.

I believe most GDPS flavors provide similar functionality via BCPii, but I
am not familiar with that.

Setup autoipl in DIAGxx, then issue a V XCF,sysname,OFFLINE,REIPL command.
Reply to the message ,SYSNAME=sysname. That should take the system out of
the sysplex, then reipl it. Assumes the system is either in a multi-system
sysplex, or at least a monoplex.

Agreed. I subscribe to Linux Tech Tips as I build my own PCs. It's great

I’ve ever seen and it makes an x86 infrastructure seem parochial.

Very different design goals and budgets. A z15 socket dissipates more
power then the entire TDP of an x86 core. A typical x86 1U rack uses
lots of less powerful cores as opposed to z which has high frequency
cores and  (used to have) enormous amounts of L4 cache which use a lot
of power. Interesting new cache architecture sharing L2 with eviction
strategies for sharing. And each core still has a whopping 32MB. IBM
seems to have gone back to it's roots of top class R

See Appendix I of the UNIX System Services Command Ref. The TZ string contains
more information than can be gleaned from "TZ=TOD zone". Rather, the TZ string
must be the point of control and the TOD zone (CVTLDTO) derived from that.

TX is "difficult to maintain" in new hardware designs (whatever that

It's true the TX facility appeared in the hardware years ago, but few
developers will adopt a technology that requires code bifurcation. TX
was not available without bifurcation until 2 1/2 years ago with z/OS 2.4.

Furthermore, z/OS 2.3 has not yet reached EOS. This means software
vendors, whose software support strategy matches IBM's, can't use TX
without code bifurcation until September 2022 -- five months from now!

Some vendors support releases older than IBM's oldest-supported release.
So, they must wait until 2024 or later...

Listers,

I am feeling particularly annoyed. I don't want to use LPALSTxx for
products. I want to be able to upgrade a product with a minimum of fuss.
I would like to use PROGXX and manage LPA dynamically. But the PROGxx and
SETPROG seem woefully under-powered for such a thing. This is more pointed
when systems have infrequent IPLs.

Thanks for posting that Parwez. Interesting reading.

I was a bit surprised to see that the Transactional Execution facility will be
removed in a future machine. I always thought that was such a clever capability.

"Removal of support of the transactional execution and constrained
transactional execution facility: In a future IBM Z hardware system family, the
transactional execution and constrained transactional execution facility will
no longer be supported. Users of the facility on current servers should always
check the facility indications before use."

Is this capability to be included in some other feature?
Has this feature not been successful? Or is it just too difficult to maintain
the code for it?

Nothing has changed regarding DFSORT's zIIP exploitation. It only exploits
zIIP when called by Db2 Utilities. And the new zSORT capability on z15 does
not exploit zIIP but instead leverages the accelerator.

I spoke too soon--now the static is back and it's not going away. Not
complaining per se, just noting in case others are hearing it, so you know
it's not you! (OK, it is irritating, so I guess I am complaining--and now
it stopped again. I'll stop now.)

of static until I switched back to the actual tab...just FYI (the static
was really irritating). That's surely some browser weirdness, not IBM or

Hi

Yes, I am definitely interested and happy to pay for postage.
Mind that I am located in Europe, I hope that is not a problem.
Is there by any chance any ancient hardware collecting dust in a corner
that will be disposed of also? Like physical terminals or anything the
like.

Thanks,

2) Advanced Communications Function for NCP for (3735)
   emulator program for IBM 3725
5735-XX9 and XXB
If I come across any other books I'll post what I find
if anyone is interested let me know I have till the 22nd to clean out my area

Re: non Db2 DFSort and zIIP question

2022-04-05 Thread Dave Betten
Nothing has changed. DFSORT still only exploits zIIP when invoked by Db2
Utilities. On z15, when using zSORT, it does not use zIIP but instead exploits
the accelerator.

PS - sorry if this is a dupe. I replied earlier but didn't see it appear in
the list.

Nothing has changed regarding DFSORT's zIIP exploitation. It only exploits
zIIP when called by Db2 Utilities. And the new zSORT capability on z15 does
not exploit zIIP but instead leverages the accelerator.

Re: LPA

2022-04-05 Thread Art Gutowski
As the OP and responders thus far are experienced and aware...

Mind your (E)CSA allocations and utilization. Suggestion: use CSAMIN= other
than the default (0,0), particularly with MASK=*. When moving
modules/libraries from LPALSTxx to Dynamic LPA, remember to adjust IEASYSxx
CSA= accordingly, and validate the Private areas before and after the IPL.

Just stating for anyone who isn't as familiar with SETPROG LPA and/or CSVDYLPA.
Which reminds me if any of the modules in question are also dynamic exit
routines, those pointers may need to be refreshed as well. There are other
restrictions, e.g., adding SVCs, entry points in the PC table, etc.

Art Gutowski

Re: LPA

2022-04-05 Thread Rob Scott
Also consider putting all LPA modules into a single function pack load module
so that the SETPROG LPA is always for the same module name (if a contained
CSECT is updated by maintenance). CSVQUERY SEARCH=LPA can be used to locate
your function pack when server/client starts.

You need a header structure that is a vector table of the included CSECTs at
the start of the LPA load module.

Your server/client code just need a mapping of the vector table so that it can
slice-and-dice the LPA load module to find the service entry points.
