Broadcom´s COPYCAT equivalent

2022-09-20 Thread Bodra - Pessoal
Hello,

Can anyone give me options to Broadcom´s software COPYCAT?

Main job for this software will be migrate data stored in Oracle SL8500
cartridge (9840D) to a new virtual cartridge keeping Tape Manager data intact
(same volser, save expiration date, etc…)

Thanks

I think you mean Tape/Copy. I found this on the web:

There are several products that are good for copying a single tape. However, if
the intent is to migrate entire tape libraries from one technology to another,
then there are a couple of vendors, including my company, that license products
to automate the process. What makes us different is that it is easy enough for
one person to complete the task. Our process includes a complete audit tape of
the tapes being copied and we support RMM, CA-1 and other tape management
systems. We do all of this without intervention and with no downtime. You can
continue normal processing whilst the migration is proceeding. All appropriate
catalogs are updated when copy is complete and the proper ENQ is held while
each tape is being copied.

The process that we use also minimizes MSU use and is significantly faster than
our competitors.

I think there is a file on the CBTtape that allows you to do this, but why do
you want to keep the same VOLSERs, wouldn't it be better (and easier) to use
another VOLSER group, and copy from/to using any number of utilities?

I have converted several sites from EMC to IBM to Luminex to Optica virtual
tapes, and the process is always very simple (I used the process from the
cbttape.org site), and the only tapes I had an issue with were Adabas backups,
(which were able to be copied via the Adabas utility). One of the sites had
some HSM issues that were resolved by just pointing HSM to the new volumes and
having it migrate the backups and migration copies to the new tapes.

The advantage of keeping the old and new volumes separate is that if you have
problems, you won't have to work very hard to fall back. If you have a
problem, it's only a matter of rerunning the conversion catalog step and you
are back to you old tapes.

Also, I believe that COPYCAT is now free from CA/Broadcom, so if you have CA-1
you get it for free.

Many years ago (decades) I used VETAPE (modified) from the CBT to convert from
reel to cartridge. The program even created the change commands when the
company was running CA-TLMS.
