Re: I saw 7 new college mainframe hires!
Tom you have given away the secret Recruit smart people who enjoy working with other smart people on hard problems for customers. They don't have to be experienced mainframers when they are hired. College recruiting is absolutely possible and partnerships with universities can be fruitful. I saw some great Apprenticeship programs in the UK recently from Barclay's bank and others. Compuware's engineering cadre includes many new to mainframe developers. What Makes Millennials Love the Mainframe? Advice from Next-gen Devs https://youtu.be/CL72xilyve8 Two interesting things there was no script for this we shot a lot of video just letting people talk and then edited it down. Second I forgot this was almost two years ago and one of the devs is now a development manager. They next generation of mainframe developers won't follow the same path we did but they are quite capable of taking care of the platform for the next 50 years. Well, here in Poland we have technical univerisity teaching mainframe as IT specialization. Obviously the students are rather young. Not to mention there are many mainframers under 35 or even under 30. And that works. There are candidates for hire, foreign companies open offices here, just to hire "new blood". The Leipzig university (Germany) has a modern mainframe (I think z14) and is teaching mainframe languages as well. Re: I saw 7 new college mainframe hires!
I hope this is growing trend and continues elsewhere. Last week there were at least 25 of these young ones at the UK Guide Share Conference. They had there own '101' track. A number of sessions were actually presented by those who have been working with IBM Z for a couple of years! If this continues at this rate, I will need to continue attending just to bring the average age up:-) Regards Parwez Hamid From: IBM Mainframe Discussion List on behalf of scott Ford Sent: 11 November 2019 01:53 To: IBM-MAIN@LISTSERV.UA.EDU Subject: Re: I saw 7 new college mainframe hires! At Share in Phoenix there were some young folks from a Swedish bank. Still writing in Assembler.
