Re: Using EMC Clarion SCSI disk with Linux
I seem to remember when hooking up our DS6800 6/7 years ago we had a problem with long/short wave connections. So I believe there are long wave signals. Mace
Re: Watson
I guess I didn't understand the problem..or didn't want to..LOL Thank you for the explanation Dr. B Mace
question on changing IP and routes
We have our z box on public addresses hence VM and all virtual Linux servers are also. We have finally stared a push to move them onto 10 addresses. We have a layer 3 vswitch defined. The network group has given me test ip addresses, subnet mask, and gateway addreses. My problem is I can make the change to a given machine with ifconfig and then view it through VM and see it has changed. But when I try to change the routing info(using route add/del) I get network unreachable. we can ping the 10 gateway from VM and from the linux machine(before the change). When I make the ip change it takes a few minutes and then on VM it is reported that the machine is there. Is it possible that changing this info on virtualized and this (ifconfig/route) would only work on grey boxes with individual real nic cards? Or what have I missed?? thanks Mace

Re: Monwrite will not stay logged on
Oh the rules are different for a mindisk I was looking at it as a 3390-3 w/850kb per cyl. Oh well thanks Mace
OK a question about performace monitoring
It looks as if we are going to buy a kit. IBM was here and suggested perf toolkit and I know there is velocity. I.ve heard good things about both but what is prefered here by those who have used both or either. thanks Mace
Re: OK a question about performace monitoring
Thanks to all. All we run on Z/vm is Linux so I see where this is going. thanks Mace
Monwrite will not stay logged on
I started collecting data(per the book) as we are going to be using the perfkit. I configured the monwrite profile to collect data and we looked at the dir and saw we had 90cyls to write data to. We started monwrite an d let it run for awhile(maybe an hr). Looked and it was gone. I thought tha t I may have logged it off so I tried to xautolog it. It starts and comes back down immed. SO I've tied to logon on to it and when I did it came back with the msg that the disk was full and went back down. How do I recover from a disk full cond?? thx Mace
Re: TCPIP problem as it applies to VM 5.2
What version of pcomm? We used 5.0 and had some problems and went to 5.7pcomm and it has worked well for us. Hope this helps Mace
Re: A question on VM/LINUX/DFDSS(MVS)
A q 633a shows it is the name I gave it(lprwrc) not the relabeled(origina l) name(l2pr01). So I guess I should add it as the name I gave it(lprwrc). N ow why didn't the label get overwritten?? thanks Mace
Re: 3390 Huge Volumes
We have a vg that is 54g in size and it works well. Mace

Re: Upgrading zVM 5.1 to 5.2
we rec'ed 4 (3590) tapes for our upgrade. Haven't done it yet but just looked in the box and saw only 4. Mace
Re: Water cooling -- was: (off topic) sump pump
I read about this about 6wks ago. I read how it was new and innovative. The first thing I thought was Welcome to the 70s. I can remember the bi g 370s with the water pipes all over. But if you think about it Windows th e way it is written is about 30 yrs behind the mainframe OS. IMHO Mace
Question about diskmap
I've jsut added some dasd to a user. When I looked at diskmap I saw: 4 VOLUME USERID CUU DEVTYPE START ENDSIZE 5 0 500 501 G AP 6 $$ DATAMOVE5F0 3380 00501 00501 1 7 DATAMOVE5FF 3380 00502 00502 This may have been like this before but I don't rememnber it. I don't se e the gap. All the number look ok. It corresponds tothe below under user datamove MDISK 5F0 3380 501 1 $$ MR MDISK 5FF 3380 502 1 $$ MR Does this look familiar ?? The next question is why are these 2 defined as 3380s,when all we have ha d are 90s??? thanks Mace
Posting questions on [EMAIL PROTECTED]
I have some linux questions that I need to ask. I've subcribed and I've gotten a refcard but nowhere on there does it talk of posting. So I tried help and it gave me some options to use. The ones I thougth I needed were GEN and PR .. the list told me that these would be good for begginers. I' ve tried both in several different formats but have gotten nothing. Any help is appreciated. thanks Mace
Re: Another dasd question about dups
We don't have flash copy. I think the person that set the guests up was going to use them as additional volumes. I can't say for sure as they escorted him out several(or more)months ago. I've inherited this and othe r things he failed to tell me about on his way out. As I said I'm thinking they are spares and he named them for use at a later date. I want to rename this pack so when we ipl again we don't get the dup message. thanks Mace
Re: Another dasd question about dups
On Fri, 28 Apr 2006 13:11:29 -0500, Brian Nielsen [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: The volumes are online, they're just not attached to the system. Your SYSTEM CONFIG file (on MAINT CF1) controlls what volume labels get attached to CP during an IPL. (After an IPL you can manually attach or detach them.) So any volumes with unique labels that don't show as CP SYSTEM either aren't listed in SYSTEM CONFIG or were manually detached from CP. While it's legal to have multiple volumes with the same label, it's usually useful only when the devices are DEDICATED to 2nd level guests instead of attached to your 1st level CP. If you accidentally have volumes with the same label you need to make su re you are using the one you intend. Only one of them can be attached to C P at a time. The user directory has nothing to do with this situation. It can't crea te it, and it can't detect it. Brian Nielsen Thank you I think I'm going to vary offline. Since it isn't being ref'ed it should come down correct??? If it does then I can bring back online and re-label it. I think this would cause the least amount of problems. Opinions??? thanks Mace
Another dasd question about dups
Something funny happened this last ipl of mvs. I got a dup vol name(on differnet devices) pointing at my Z/VM-Linux guest dasd. The operators replyed to one of them and MVS went alon it's merry way. Now when I added the vols I went into the user directory and checked dasd names allocated and there wasn't one there, anywhrere. And I also did a Q dasd and it didn't show there either. So now I'm confused so I list all dasd (q -) and I found some wei rd things there. It looks as if the person that set up the instances might have named certain packs but never put them into the system. Here is a snippet if a display: 63C3 CP SYSTEM LDTR01 1 63C4 CP SYSTEM LDML01 1 63C5 LDML02 63C6 CP SYSTEM LDMR01 1 63C7 LDMR02 63C8 CP SYSTEM LDPL01 1 63C9 LDPL02 63CA CP SYSTEM LDPR01 1 63CB LDPR02 == this is the dup(also one on 6332) I looks as if there are several devices in this mode . So I want to cpfmtxa this guy. I guessing I can because it looks to me th at the dev was named(duh) but nerver brought online and definitely not added to user direct. From reading old posts I also guessing that Linux CANNOT touch this device because it isn't listed as a minidisk. Well it is but n ot this one. One more question. If there were 2 names in user direct and you processed the file (diskmap and directxa) would it have beeen caught there?? I looking for opinions. thanks Mace
Re: shutting down a linux guest on VM problem
I have in my sles 9 sp3 inittab: ca::ctrlaltdel:/sbin/shutdown -r -t 4 now but it is the same in my sles 9 sp1 guest It did work but I guessing it's the guest not playing well with others. I was at the Columbus meeting of MVRUG last time when Jim spoke of track, but it was abit..let's not lie... much over my head. The stuff he showed that track could do really didn't mean much to me. Please don't take what I just said wrong but it would be like reading a Chinese newspaper to me. I 'm sure it is full of good stuff but I don't understand it. And I had to get back to work so 2 things happened. 1-I missed out on asking question at lunch and more importantly 2) I MISSED A FREE LUNCH. thanks Mace
