'boxed' device

2009-09-03 Thread James Hammons
After a hardware service call,
we are unable to bring an AFP
printer back on line.

VM shows the device is 'boxed'.

I think I've tried the obvious,
however any insight short of an
IPL would be helpful.

steps taken so far:

1) power off, power up device

2) vary off path xx from all
   vary off chpid xx force
the ce reset the pchpid from the hmc
   set rdev cuu clear
   set rdev cuu type afp
(printer is not boxed, and status is 'offline')
   vary on chpid xx
vary on path xx to all force
('q cuu' shows the device is now 'boxed')

Is it a Xerox printer??

If so vary it offline, take the path and chpid off then power it
down(wait a few minutes).

Power the device up(wait a few minutes) then the chpid, path, device

Keep your fingers crossed as sometimes we have had to reipl, but it is a
z/OS system

Good luck

resolved: hardware problem

(note to self...never question the VM documentation. The doc indicates clearly
that 'boxed' is a hardware problem)

The 'channel' bypass switch was on. The CE flipped the switch, and VM is
happy along with the quest that needed the
printer.

Thanks for the responses on offlist.jlh

VM shows the device is 'boxed'.
